Around the SB Nation: Oregon's post-game punch steals the show
- Well, so much for the tone-setting pre-game handshake. Boise State's 19-8 win over the Oregon Ducks was overshadowed by a lengthy post-game, assault-filled tirade courtesy of Duck running back LeGarrette Blount. While SB Nation Broncos blog OBNUG attempts to resist giving top billing to the melee, Oregon blog Addicted to Quack cannot see past it and can only feel embarrassed.
- South Carolina's less than impressive win over N.C. State has Gamecock blog Garnet and Black Attack asking questions.
- Dawg Sports gives its Too Much Information preview of tomorrow's game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Oklahoma St. Cowboys. Texas blog Burnt Orange Nation wonders whether the Cowboys can overcome injuries and come out on top against an SEC opponent.
- Virginia Tech blog Gobbler Country is all over tomorrow's headliner between the Hokies and the Alabama Crimson Tide, noting the keys to the game, doing podcasts, scratching out road trip checklists, running an NCAA10 simulation in anticipation of the game (the Hokies "win" 27-24), and noting that a quality opponent makes the season opener all the sweeter.

... which begs the question:
If something happened at 1:30 a.m. on blue (!!!) astro-turf, then did it really happen?
This is the question I expect to be posed to a Boise jury in a few months.

I actually closed down the live game thread last night
so I may be the only non Boise/Oregon fan in the Eastern time zone to have seen it live. Sadly, it was the best part of the game. I in no way condone what Blount did, but the look on the Boise State player’s face as he hit the turf was priceless.
I saw it
And yeah, you’re right.. I think it went something like this:
BSU Player: “Neeheehee we just beat the crap outta you neeheehee!” preppy smirk here.
Blount: Dumb white kid making fun of ME!! RAWR!! Falco pawnch!!!
BSU Player: “OMG HE ATTACKED!!”
Kirk Herbstreit: And this years Heisman Trophy goes to .. TIM TEBOW, UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA!!!
[ Begin music]
Jim Ross: My.. My god, is that Eric Berry's music??!!
Kirk: I hope not ...

I got a bone to pick with the VT blog's checklist
1. Zaxby’s is a chain. So nothing special about eating it in ’loosa.
2. Krystal’s. Thats Tennessee born right there.
My suggestion is Whitt’s BBQ, I always have to hit that place up when I’m in bama. Though theres a few of locations across the border in southern Tennessee. Their white BBQ is killer, which is tough to say to say about any Alabama BBQ institution from someone from Memphis.

Gobbler Country
did split the SEC divisions into “SEC Zaxby’s” (East) and “SEC Cane’s” (West) earlier this year, which I thought was well done

Perhaps
If Blount had played the game with the same passion and emotion he showed after the game he might have had more than -5 yards rushing with a safety. Blount had been running smack leading up to this game and couldn’t take it when the BSU kid let him know after the game.
The talking heads on ESPN are in full defense mode of one of their favorite schools. Saying he shouldn’t be suspended for his malicious sucker punch. Yet another PAC-10 sally program.

Agreed +1
The kid has a history of problems, according to the talking heads. I’m ashamed to admit it but I agree with Bob Davie – indefinite suspension from the team, lots of counseling and maybe an encouragement to go try someplace else for embarrassing the school on national TV. And, it was a complete sucker punch, the BSU kid wasn’t looking at him after talking smack (which is clearly a suburbs kind of thing to do).
Btw, Boise State still hasn’t played anybody. And, from the looks of their schedule, they won’t play anybody until the bowl game. This is football’s version of Memphis scheduling – a bunch of scrimmage games, with one name team that’s not really that good, to bump up the ranking until season end.
As to USC, their defense appears stout (yes, I know, it was just NC State) but their offense looks gleefully anemic. We should take them. Anyone who has them ranked higher than Tennessee gets a 72-hour window to apologize (grace given until after the WKU game).
I will say just this much about Boise's schedule.
They can’t be faulted for their conference games. They still hurt the SoS (as they rightly should), and a conference loss would be an enormous blow, but they don’t have a choice in that matter. They’ve been trying to join the MWC for a while, but the MWC wants to wait until closer to the next BCS negotiation. So long as Boise keeps this pace up, they will be far more valuable to the MWC by bringing in their team strength component without having to win at the expense of other MWC teams.
The rest of the noncon is lightweight. They have the joy of playing Bowling Green in Ohio, and if the Clawfense can manage to win a few more games, it might be more of a SoS help than we anticipated. But UC-Davis is no help.
Clawfense
How the hell did Troy give up 31 points last night? Did the Clawfense score that many points combined last year? (I know that is a ridiculous question, but you had to think about it, didn’t you? Admit it.)

There was an INT ret for TD
so only 24…and while the QB Sheehan had a great game, the BGSU rushing attack had 50 yards at 1.8 per carry. So, there’s that to ponder over for another 22 hours…

Bad O-line scheme for run blocking
The hallmark of the Clawfense?

Va Tech's own site predicts a Bama win?
Wow, that’s comparable to admitting a beat down is coming. And, it is coming.

If Va Tech is to win
I think it will be with defense and special teams. Hardly a revelation, I know, but Bammer is breaking in a new QB and some unproven OL kids.
Losing Evans, their best RB, hurts Va Tech’s chances of clock management and keeping Bammer’s offense off the field. I could see a 20-17 game going either way. Special teams will be the deciding factor. If Bammer’s D and Arenas can get going early then I see the Tide pulling one out.

Counterpoint (and I hate Bama, so this is really difficult)
VT’s QB is also unproven. VT site says they have no deep threat WR’s. VT says they will rely heavily on the run. They laud the Bama front 7 (and rightly so). Short passing game and run orientation mean that the line has to be really good at creating seams/quick hitters or it’s going to be a long night. I just don’t think VT’s scheme or their OL is that good, so I think VT has an awful time moving the ball. If VT scores more than 14 without a special teams or defensive score, I’ll be stunned.
Sure Bama’s QB is new and so are parts of their OL but they always have studs in the RB position and they simply reload with new beasts up front. There’s no under-selling Julio Jones either. If you get the ball in his general area, he’s catching it (unless EB is on him). Bama may not have a super-high powered offense but they’ll ring up 24+ on VT.
It could be worse, but I’ll go 28-10.

Agreed
I can easily see Bammer’s LB’s spending the whole game in Va Tech’s backfield.
Also agreed Julio Jones is a football monster who should dominate this year.

Those Bama players should have read the fine print...
… when Saban promised each of them “a Beamer.”

In Blacksburg
They’re overconfident. There was an article in The Roanoke Times on Wednesday where VT defensive linemen were bordering on smack-talking about how many times they were going to sack McElroy.
Anybody who talks positively about Tyrod Taylor has never watched him play. Without heaping doses of BeamerBall, there’s no way VT scores points against Alabama’s defense. McElroy and Alabama’s offense merely have to be average and mistake-free, and I think Bama wins comfortably.

When both teams are ranked in the top 10, VT is 2-8 under Beamer
VT is overrated at #7 and probably belongs closer to the bottom of the Top 25. They are ranked that high on reputation/tradition and because the pollsters think they need to include top teams from every conference in their preseason polls.
Beamer loses against other good teams.
