By the way, at least a small part of the Clawson riddle has been answered.
Troy lost two cornerbacks prior to the game, both to academice ineligibility. Their only senior corner was lost two weeks ago (read: the middle of fall camp), and a sophomore starter was ruled ineligible on the day of the game. The sophomore will redshirt this year, meaning he played during last season.
There were some warning signs. From the first article:
The secondary had just one returning starter when preseason camp opened and now, with the Trojans starting the season tonight at Bowling Green, hasnone [sic].
And:
Tonight, at cornerback, the Trojans will likely start two players who have no Division I-A experience.
And that was before losing KeJuan Phillips. So Troy started three defensive backs who had not played a snap of D-1A football. Troy might be a decent team, but I’m willing to bet that they suffer the curse of most mid-majors in that their talent depth is effectively zero.
