At Long Last, The Search is Over: Tyler Bray is a Tennessee Volunteer
This just in: we have been informed that Tyler Bray has committed to the Tennessee Volunteers. This comes as little surprise, considering his comments after his official visit during the weekend tilt against Western Kentucky and considering that his father stayed behind (presumably to find a realtor).
Welcome to your new path to the NFL, Tyler!
UPDATE: [Note by hooper, 09/08/09 2:30 PM EDT ][Note by hooper, 09/08/09 2:30 PM EDT ]
A few links from around the news types:
- Rivals has an article up with an interview with Bray. ($)
- VolNation has message threads growing like kudzu.
- Scout is now confirming the commit.
- Tony Basilio interviewed his high school coach, who said he is a Vol. (No story on TB's site yet.)
- The Sports Animal is also reporting this on the air.
GVX says he hasn't committed.GVX is confirming the commitment.
So basically, we're seeing a snapshot of where the various reporters are in terms of getting a hold of their sources. The dart board is kinda littered right now, but things are rapidly zeroing in on the great news.

Who broke this story?

Not on Volquest yet

How does this affect our recruitment for other QBs
Do we still pursue Scroggins or Brunetti?

volquest says he’s a volunteer, but I don’t do the $$$ thing so I’m not bothering to check them ;-)

Bursting the Bubble
Point 1: Sorry to be a cynic but I find getting a committment this early in the recruiting season akin to your senior year Homecoming date. You might be going to Homecoming with her but it doesn’t mean you are “steady” and it sure doesn’t mean she is your date to prom. Essentially, we have all seen recruits change their commitments and Bray just did it by changing from SDSU to UT. Hold on until signing day before you heap praise on this kid.
Point 2: We stole a recruit from SDSU!? Why are we happy? Sorry again but as a UT alum and a San Diego resident for 7 years, I consider SDSU’s program to be at the same level as Western Kentucky or Austin Peay. I have alot of SDSU alums as friends and even they consider their team to be a joke. So why then is it a good thing we took their QB prospect? Maybe he is an up and comer and maybe we can hang on to him thru signing day but let’s put this in perspective. He was committed to SDSU, not Notre Dame, Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama or even Florida State and North Carolina. Right now, we have a QB “committment” but it’s nothing to write home about.

That's cool.
Having a counterargument is probably a really good thing right now. We’re all still pretty punch-drunk on the WKU win and you do bring up some good points. If you don’t mind, I’d like to address them in a near-future post.

And as a Wyoming undergraduate alum,
I’m fully aware of the howling vortex of stink that SDSU has been. ;)

His dad is shopping for a house in Knoxville
He is the #6 pro-style QB in the nation.
He was invited to, and attended, and performed near the top. the Elite 11 camps.
He has 1 offer b/c no one knew about him until about 2 months ago, and everyone else already has their QB committed.
There are more reasons, which I guess Hooper will address, but if these brief points don’t assuage your concerns, I doubt anything will.

Mollifying my concerns
That’s great, thank you for checking me. I am glad we finally got a QB, I really am. At least we know we have someone to fill a roster spot but we shouldn’t throw a confetti parade for this committment, especially this early. Like I said, he may be an up & comer but I still see the SDSU thing as a yellow if not red flag. I will become more placated if we start to hear that other more reputable programs are trying to get him. That to me will prove our recruiting prowess in that we got him before other’s realized he was good. Until then, you go on being the glass is half-full optimist and I’ll provide the dose of realism.

But an early commitment my stave off other offers.
It’s the same trap with the *star rating system on the recruiting sites – a lot of that is based on what colleges offer. A lot of colleges already have their QBs wrapped up, and may not want to risk offending them by chasing another one. Part of the recruiting philosophy of this coaching staff is to identify talent early, and be among the first to offer them.
In the end, can you say he’s the savior of UT football? Of course not; UT, and every other school, has had 4 star players come and go with out making a ripple in the program. Conversely, one of my favorite players of all time at UT, J.J. McCleskey, went from being a walk-on, to a scholarship player, to having a six year NFL career. But this commitment (which looks pretty solid; let’s hope the senior Bray finds and buys a house pretty quickly; luckily, it;s a buyer’s market :) fills in a huge hole and counters a major talking point of the anti-Kiffin crowd.

My wife went to high school with him.
Which is about my biggest claim to fame. Oh, and I had lunch two tables away from Heath Shuler at the UC once.

Who is going to go after him?
All of the Pac-10 schools have QBs committed. Notre Dame has a QB. Alabama does. He does not fit the Florida or LSU systems. The major Big 12 programs have commits already, too. So, you’re going to be waiting a long time to be happy if you’re going to base that solely on his offer list.

Do you follow college football?
Once again, a commitment means nothing until February. I’m not trying to ruin the party, just tone it down a notch.
Just because you already have a QB commitment doesn’t mean you stop shopping and just because you committed doesn’t mean you are off the market. USC often gets 2 blue chip QBs a season. Heck, Texas had Jevan Snead and Colt McCoy at the same time. After McCoy won the job, Snead transferred. This is a common occurrence in college football. Also, just because we have Bray doesn’t mean we are done trying to pry others away. How do you think we got such a good class in Feb ‘09? We stole alot of them from others(see Nu’keese Richardson).
The same goes for people trying to steal from us. Someone going after your “commitment” is a form of flattery. I merely stated I will be placated with this committment if others come after him. I will not happy til he puts a helmet on and plays well. If he becomes the next Peyton Manning, then I’ll start singing your song.
Until then………hopefully realistic.

Man
You may not be trying, but you sure are ruining the party.
I think it’s perfectly reasonable for fans to get excited about the #6 overall 4-star QB committing.
Remember Erik Ainge? He was number 21 overall pro-style out of high school. How did he do for Tennessee?
And you are also way off worrying so much about his committment. All we have at this point are verbals, but QB’s rarely, if ever, decommit to make a lateral move unless a team tanks a season and the coaches get fired (Josh Nunes).
You’ve got some high expectations for UT if your expecting the next Peyton Manning to commit right now and stay BFF’s with UT for the next 6 months and then for 4 years.
As for me, I completely trust this coaching staff’s judgement on evaluating talent and recruting. I’ll question play calls or gametime coaching decisions, but I think their recruiting prowess has earned them lots of leeway here.
Tennessee WILL beat Georgia on the way to 9+ wins in '09!!!

I follow college football fairly closely.
For 19 years now. If you want to disagree that’s fine, but please don’t patronize me.

Easy fellas
We’re here to celebrate a recruit. Nothing more. Nothing less. If he fills out his frame and continues his streak of accuracy awards, he could be special. Let’s just take a deep breath…aaaannnnddd…exhale.
