Lane Kiffin pokes Satan, leaves Tennessee fans to fend for themselves
A few random thoughts on the news of Lane Kiffin's abandonment of Tennessee:
- Lane Kiffin's brief reign on Rocky Top will be remembered mostly for the smack talk. It's funny, because such chest-thumping was tolerable, even embraced by multitude of otherwise humble Tennessee fans because of the effect it had. It galvanized the team and the fan base. You often heard players say they liked it because it showed that Kiffin "had their back." And then he bolts. It's like poking Satan with a sharp stick and then pointing to your friend while you high tail it out of there. Nice.
- So much for the slogan. It's Time. Time to burn those shirts, per Pride of the Southland: "ITS TIME to stab me in the back. ITS TIME to show your true colors. ITS TIME to destroy my program. ITS TIME to burn."
- The timing. This has to be the worst time to be looking for a new coach. There are a mere 21 days until National Signing Day. I'm told by that same source I mentioned earlier that all eight mid-term guys are no longer mid-term enrollees. Twitter says that Tyler Bray's dad was fuming and "working the phones." And does anyone think that Kiffin's "ethics" will cause him to refrain from recruiting any of the players committed to or recruited by the staff while at Tennessee to Southern Cal? Anyone? Bueller?
- As if the mere bolting wasn't classless enough, Kiffin attempted to impose ridiculous restrictions on the coverage of his press conference. He would not take questions. I second that comment of Wes Rucker, who said, "If you've got nothing to be ashamed of, take some questions." Kiffin almost canceled the whole thing because some TV guys wouldn't agree to avoid live shots. Nice.
- Who now? Troy Calhoun? John Gruden? Mike Leach? Gary Patterson? David Cutcliffe? Kyle Whittingham? Will Muschamp? Can we get a guy from the NFL? Do we want a guy from the NFL?
- Spencer won the cheese bet. Of course, so did we, as it was a gift wager and we lost nothing. Except, of course, for our coaching staff -- all but one of them! But we were playing with house cheese, so, you know. You take what you can get.
- The deal. GVX says that Kiffin's buyout was a mere $800k (I've misplaced the link). That's probably a consequence of a lower-than-normal head coaching salary and perhaps some other quirks in the contract relating to spreading the wealth among the entire staff, but still. It sure was financially easy for him to leave, wasn't it? Mike Hamilton will likely be answering questions from major donors tomorrow morning.
- Speaking of Mike Hamilton, what a rotten several months this guy has had. The pellet guns and Prius debacle. The guns and dope basketball player thing, and now this. At least that's the proverbial "three," and he can set about the task of recovering now.
- Kiffin's move has made hundreds of thousands of southerners sudden UCLA fans. Who doesn't want to see the Trojans fail spectacularly now?
That's it for now, although I'm sure we'll have much, much more in the coming days. Remember, we may feel like torches and pitchforks right now, but they never look good on the tape in the morning. 'Night all.

For once, I feel bad for UT
As a Vandy fan, UT never gets any sort of pity. I mean, we have the worst team in the SEC.
Anyway, this is a dirty, rotten move by Kiffen. It’s good for the SEC for UT to be strong.
Hope you get a great coach.

Wow, Orgeron told kids not to go to class!
We have heard from multiple sources, including defensive tackle Marlon Walls that Ed Orgeron was on the phone tonight with some of the early enrollees telling them not to go to class tomorrow and attempting to begin the process of recruiting them to USC.
While I think anyone dealing with Lane deserves what they get with Lane given his track record,
I do not condone that suff. pure scumbaggery

That could become a major problem for USC if true.
It could be construed as interference with academics.

Bruin fan here
$c has been thumbing its nose at the ncaa (can’t capitalize that acronym) for half a century at least. They take pride in cheating. I think the consensus is that Bruins have nothing to fear from Lame, I mean Lane, as a coach, but he is unscrupulous and unprincipled, so he will continue the legacy of cheating. That could cause more ncaa scrutiny to fall on the trOJans, but I doubt it. My son, at a very very early age, correctly characterized it as the “$c sleaze factor.” Anyway, I have no doubt that it will be business as usual.
I read somewhere in this thread that Lame’s departure caused many Vols to become Bruin fans. Welcome. It’s a pleasure to be associated with a classy group.
Go Bruins

Mike Garrett and Kiffin deserve each other. But I’m not sure wishing any success for Rick “Slash and Burn” Nueheisel is any lesser an evil. I love college football, but it’s situations like this make it sick to be one sometimes.
OMFG
This is going to destroy not one, but two, programs…

Chris Low ended his article with on a strange and ominous note:
“When asked for a comment on Kiffin leaving rival Tennessee for USC, Florida coach Urban Meyer told ESPN.com Tuesday night, “No.” A Florida university undercover police officer, accompanying Meyer at the Florida-Kentucky game, said the coach would have no further comment on the matter.
Meyer was accompanied by his wife, Shelley, and watched the first half of the game in the tunnel area just off the court at the O’Connell Center floor. *For most of the first half, Meyer was talking to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who also attended the game.*
Kraft drove up from Tampa or Orlando or wherever he spends the winter. . .
. . . to see Calipari because they are buddies. Probably friends with Meyer as well considering Meyer and Belichick are good friends. Don’t think there is much else to it.

It sucks that he's leaving....
but i’m surprised that everyone seems so shocked. Part of hiring a good coach is the chance that other people will want that coach, and as much as I hate to say it, USC is a better job than UT. It’s basically the pro football team in the second largest market in the US.
College coaches have no loyalty, and the best ones are usually the least loyal. Just ask Saban and Meyer. I bet if we throw enough money at Saban he’d be here next week, and he’d bring his recruits with him.
I, for one, don’t want to hire a second rate coach just so no one will try to poach him. I think Hamilton did a good job with the Kiffin hire (love him or hate him, hid did a good job), and hopefully he can find another good coach. This probably means we have another rebuilding year, but I’m a Vol fan for life, not just next year.
i dont blame anyone for wanting to go to USC

Based on what?
That he is so laser-focused on his job that he bristles at the media? That he has attempted to advance his career, without doing so at the expense of the schools he coached? At least he doesn’t:
- Accuse other coaches of cheating
- Complain about tainted officiating
- Leave football programs in shambles after a year of “coaching”
- Leave NCAA violations/recruiting scandals in his wake
Explain to me how Saban is a piece of crap.

Gator fan here
I suspect tonight we’re all on the same side. Good luck on your next hire. Muschamp would be a very good choice if you can get him, and he is a superior human being to the one who just left. If it’s any consolation, I think USC just got their version of Ron Zook.
I am not here to rub it in
I just want to say I dont feel sorry for UT. I have no idea why other Gator fans do.
1. Vols would never feel sorry for Gators, ever, no matter what.
2. Everyone told you the guy was a DB/scum, but noooooo we were all just haters. Kiffin is really in your head isnt he you would say. No hes a peice of trash, and I am not sorry that it took for this to happen to prove it.

At the end of the day its just a blog site, its open for every one. I understand it may have bad timing, but to call me a D-bag is bad form. Especially when I declared I wasnt sorry for the Vol fans, not insult anyone, nothing bad about the school was said at all.
Obviously nobody is going to be happy about my comment, no one is going to say ya ur right Hook he was a prick and he wasnt just in your head like we claimed. I didnt expect anyone too. I dont have anything else to say to defend myself on not being a douche bag for the comment, except being called a DB just justifies to me why I said the comment in the first place.
My intention wasnt to offend, my bad, on the timing… if you still think it was “bad form” continue on with the inults. Im thick skinned.

But its not like I am insulting your school or what not. Is it wrong for a hated rival to not feel sorry for you. I mostly said it becuase some gator fans are saying they feel sorry for you. Do you want me to pitty you. I’ll just chalk it up to bad timing. In that case I guess I could waited until things cooled down. my bad

Hey Vols fans.
It appears we are linked again. I became a Vols fan after your guys treated us traveling Bruins so damn well. Now it appears With Lame Kitten returning to the U of South Central, we will be forever joined at the hips.
Don’t feel too bad, other than the BS way he handled himself, he’s doing you guys a favor by leaving.
The best thing you can do for your children is to love their mother. John Wooden
well, we're getting reports that Lame Kitten is trying to poach Norm Chow out from under us.
So, we might just be in the same boat as far as needing a home run hire if that happens.
The best thing you can do for your children is to love their mother. John Wooden
We're getting conflicting reports out here.
Would you guys consider Mike Leach? he’s available, and i for one think he is innocent of the charges being levied against him
The best thing you can do for your children is to love their mother. John Wooden
personally, i dont want leach
maybe before Kiffin, but leach has a stain on him right now which is something we dont need here at the moment. I dont know that our AD Hamilton’s job could withstand a choice like that. We also need someone who can recruit which is a weakness of leach’s and his system, imo, doesnt lend to players wanting to come if they want to jump to the nfl.
RIP Steve McNair (1973 - 2009) Retire #9!

Nah, I don't want Leach
Regardless of whether or not he’s innocent, I don’t like the way he’s handled the situation.
Innocent?
His statements in the ESPN interview have been contradicted by the physician involved in the case and his own players stated after the bowl game that he deserved being fired, it wasn’t Adam James fault and that it was a long time coming. Specifically that they liked the guy but that he had changed over the last couple of years and was off his rocker. Go search for Brandon Carter’s comments. He was one of the senior leaders on that team. It’s very enlightening.
PS: Never, ever trust a Lawyer and Mike Leach IS a lawyer.
Last I checked you used to have a great HC
who is currently without a job. Georgia Tech fan here and I feel some sympathy for you guys my cousins go to Tennessee so I root for the Vol’s most of the time. I’m just curious why no one has brought up Philip Fulmer’s name? Were the terms of his firing so bad that he couldn’t or wouldn’t be asked to come back? Just looking for some info from some people close to the situation.
Kinda like what Ray Goff said in his comments to Kirby Smart and Will Muschamp...
…once you get fired from your alma mater, you don’t have a home anymore. It is almost always the bells tolling the end of your career.
Keep your chin up Vols!!!
I admire your passion for your team. I was not able to travel to Knoxville for the UCLA/UT game but had many friends that did. They all had nothing but great things to say about TN. With that being said, you guys will be better off without Kiffin. He’s been flirting with the NCAA and was bound to get you guys in trouble. His true SCum colors are out and you don’t need that type of HC at your school.
Please join the BruinNation in enjoying kicking the crap out of sc and Kiffin!!
Best of luck to you guys!!
Hope you guys get a REAL Tennessee Vol as Head Coach!
I just read the post of Lame Kittens complete chucking (never accepting) of your traditions. So wrong. So very wrong. The “SC of the South”?! How’d ya’ll EVER put up with that?!?!?!?!?! I’m not even from the South, and that offends me as a college football fan. You gotta find a man who bleeds Orange. Plain and simple. Good luck!
