I'm thinking no, but I'm not wagering anything on that thought.

Im hoping not
We need something very well thought out and I dont know if we will get that on such short notice.
well, this ought to be interesting.
i read over in the comments at EDSBS that there’s talk about bringing Fulmer back to guide the team through a transition to a new, long-term-solution HC… anyone know about that? ‘m a Gator, so I don’t know much about Fulmer (other than he was, apparently, a prince of a guy,) any chance it happens?

You know...
Hamilton already commented on the coaching situation yesterday… not a formal press conference or anything, but he did comment. So, that makes me wonder if this may have something to do with the Fulmer thing. Or maybe Hamilton is stepping down…

True.
(Just don’t remind him that he would have had many other offers anyhow.)
by David Hooper on Jan 13, 2010 12:59 PM EST up reply actions
this better not have anything to do with fulmer
It would be retrograde to bring him in, and there is no way trustees or donors could think that its smart to replace Hamilton at this point. Either of those would really set us back
by golfballs03 on Jan 13, 2010 12:54 PM EST via mobile reply actions
agreed.
I love Phil, but one year away and a return back to him does not a program fix. Thats a band-aid when you need stitches.
Also, can someone let me know when the audio starts (im on cbs); I work in a school district building and just about all online media is blocked…

ESPN...
..to carry live – just announced.
Ain't it good to be alive and be in Tennessee!
I dunno
I think having him as the AD versus the Coac would be both a solid move showing dedication to the program, as well as a very a politcally savvy move by the School itself.
Don’t give Fulmer back the coach job, let him find another coach, and let him find someone that has his level of dedication he brought to the position.
Further it takes away the administrations current problem, by removing Mike Hamilton from the position they are showing to the fan base that they don’t want a repeat of this situation and remove themselves from the line of fire.
Pretty smart move actually all said and told.
Phillip saves face, the school takes less hits as well as has a fall guy, and the head coach job is still open to anyone on the board.

Search has begun. (duh). Began immediately after notification.
(aside: MH always keeps a list ready for something like this.)
No timetables. But time of essence due to recruiting and NSD.
Rather ‘be a day late to get the right person’. But moving AQAP.
Saturday: Kiffin out on the road recruiting. Met w/ MH on Saturday morning.

Question: what's the biggest concern w/ NSD coming up, NCAA 'investigation' etc?
Answer: semantics, but no investigation from NCAA at moment.
Also, this happens due to timing of NFL season. Couldn’t anticipate things like Carroll’s departure.
Keeping up w/ players to make sure they’re doing their business and staying prepared while UT gets a new coach.
Thank God!
We didn’t offer him a boat load of cash to stay!
Question: What advice given to mid-termers?
Answers: Go to class. Represent UT with best effort and hold heads high.
meeting w/ midtermers was a ‘great’ meeting.

How to keep the class together?
Timing is of the essence. We need to get our crap together quick.
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:10 PM EST reply actions
Question: reaction to news of Orgeron's contacting students and keeping recruiting class together
First: operating outside knowledge of rules and timing of talking to recurits w/regards to enrollment.
Second: moving as quickly as possible.
Q: what are priorities in coaching search? have they changed?
A: Not really: need national recruiting. need to understand how to compete in SEC, whether or not they’ve been there before. Must be leader and educate in on-and off-field requirements.
Priorities for a new coach?
1. Understands recruiting nationally
2. Understands operating in a buerocratic state environment
3. Understands what it will take to compete in the SEC
4. Good leader of men

Lane Kiffin's Tenure at Tennesse
Brief!!! I love that!
Q: Do you feel betrayed?
A: feel like we gave him a chance at a great university. He did work hard for UT everyday while he was here. Not so much disappointed personally, but disappointed for players and fans.
Kippy made perfect sense as interim
One of us, with Majors and Fulmer, fine indvididual, one of the great coaches in America, will rep us well. Did a great job dealing with players yesterday.

"Gentlemen, it is better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football." John Heisman
by Joseph Stanley on Jan 13, 2010 1:13 PM EST up reply actions
Q: How decided on Kippy for interim?
A: One of us. Fine coach. Been here before. Knows he’ll do a great job. Already doing a great job as a calming influence.
Follow-up: He’s very stable and will no doubt be around. Made the most sense.
Q: questions about Kiffin's dedication to UT's traditions. How important will that be?
A: He did maintain a lot of traditions, but did modify them. There are semantics involved regarding ‘maintaining’ traditions. Remember that we had 2 coaches for 32 years, and they undoubtedly modified traditions. Dickey changed a lot of things. Adaptation to a particular coach is common for UT and is not necessarily ‘change’.
Kiffin didn't do every single thing exact same way
But you have to remember that Fulmer and Majors changed things too. Coach Dickey freaked people out with checkerboard end zone. Coaches have to put their stamp on program but respect history. MH and Kiffin had these conversations.
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:15 PM EST reply actions
Q: What's level of pressure on MH in this search?
A: It’s the SEC. It’s UT. Of course it’s huge, and he knew it. That’s not different than before.
MH knew what he was getting into
Lots more active recently, but his job is the same.
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:15 PM EST reply actions
Q: What if you can't get the coach you want?
A: No chance for a year w/ an interim. A full-time coach only.

Are you worried about perception that UT is not a top notch job
No. Lane wouldn’t have left without Southern Cal connections.
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:16 PM EST reply actions
Q: Is there a perception that UT is not the job it once was?
A: No in his mind. USC was a special case for Kiffin only.
Priority on finding someone who considers UT their final home?
A: This is a destination job. We want someone who understands that. This is a great place to coach, raise a family.
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:17 PM EST reply actions
Don't necessarily need a previous UT connection
We’re getting the best candidate
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:17 PM EST up reply actions
Q: Any priority on someone who finds UT there end goal?
A: UT is a destination job. Wants someone who wants to be here and can see this as a long-term hire. Loves the family environment. The job deserves the best.
How do we protect the school better financially
No amount of buyout with keep a coach who wants to leave.
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:18 PM EST reply actions
Q: How do you protect UT financially? (E.g. $7 mil buyout for UT, but only $800k for USC.)
A: No amount of money on buyout keeps a coach if they truly want to leave b/c most instances involve schools that can afford the buyout. If he doesn’t want to be here, we don’t want him here anyhow.
huh
ESPN is even covering that one now, wonder if Mike is out of the loop?

Needs a competitive guy. Comptetitive guys want an SEC job.
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:25 PM EST reply actions
Q: Lane was very brash. Looking back, were you comfy with that? Any insight on conversation of leaving to USC?
A: Wants a head coach who is confident in their ability to succeed. If not, they get eaten alive. Confidence is absolutely mandatory.
A2: re: conversations re: USC. SEC is most competitive league in America and I thought you were a competitive guy. Separation will only grow based on ESPN, etc. contracts.
Wants to know where he stands
Glad he talked to Lane about whether he’d have interest in USCwest.
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:26 PM EST reply actions
Q: Lessons in search process?
A: Learn more w/ every search process. A guy who fits well at one place might not fit at another. Wants to know where you stand on things (e.g. Kiffin’s interest in USC) than get blindsided later. Doesn’t necessarily prevent things but allows for preparation.
A cont’d: When he told sponsors about this prior to the announcement, they thought he was joking. So MH knew prior to everybody esle.

What does it take to built a great UT program?
1. Recruiting out of state
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:34 PM EST reply actions
IMO
Kippy’s OK by me. I’m guessing the remaining staff ok with that, too.
Ain't it good to be alive and be in Tennessee!
Q: What does it take to build a successful prgram here?
A: Recruit out of state. Not enough w/in state to make it work. At one time, had 17 players from Ohio. UT was a ‘scavenger school’. Get the best players from states where schools are down. Brand name sells.
Can we recruit without Lane's brashness?
A: I don’t know about all that brashness.
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:35 PM EST reply actions
Q: Is Kiffin's brashness the way to go, or are there other methods?
A: Wasn’t here during the brashness, so don’t know about that.
Q: Were you aware when you were hired that Lane might leave?
A: You always know that things can happen. People always aspire to do better, Lane obviously thought USCwest was a better job. Kippy would rather be at UT (‘cause he’s awesome).
by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:36 PM EST reply actions
Q: Aware that Kififn might leave?
A: Lesson learned early on: when you get a job, your first job is to get a better job. His personal preference is UT over USC, but Kiffin is not Kippy.
Q: Are you recruiting coordinator? How do you manage?
A: We’re going forward with recruiting weekend this weekend. Pat and Bruce are helping. We’ll have a successful weekend. We’ll have a coach hired by Friday. Full speed ahead.

Two-headed monster!
Q: If you don't get the job, would you stay in some capacity?

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 13, 2010 1:38 PM EST reply actions

Really? Bro-in-law left him hanging? Surely not.
I tell mammas and daddys
Don’t choose because of a coach. Coaches leave. I didn’t get a chance to coach Peerless. Hope he didn’t come for me. But he won a championship. That’s how these things work. It’s good to like a coach, but university, fanbase, teammates are #1. Coaches come and go. Get way too much credit/blame.

Really want Kippy to stay
But I don’t know that he’s ready to be HC. As someone said, it seems a little Bill Stewart

He's fine being an assistant, though.
I’m not altogether convinced that he’s the leader in the chase right now.

I'm not either
And I’m glad he’s fine being an assistant. I hope we bring in somebody top notch and somebody who wants to keep Kippy. The man is a great position coach/passing game coach.

Not even top 5
I don’t think Chris Petersen is the guy. His career has been on the West Coast and I doubt he’d come. Only stayed in Pittsburgh for one year.
Kippy to stay .... yes
Head Coach….. no….. we need someone who can WOW with his name and reputation…. Kippy can and will do that but it will take time as a coordinator ……. give him 3 years as an OC and he’ll be on the top of all the lists for new coaches all over the country.
Personally,
I was impressed with the way Kippy handled everything He apparently was the one who calmed the players down and told them to move on, life happens. I hope we keep him on
I will give him 100% support if hired as HC because he seems like a class act, and he can teach the players about life in addition to football. Kiffin was all about football, which isn’t bad, but I think building character in your players is much more important and helpful in creating a winning program.
I just want to know something soon. I wonder if Kippy had insde info because he kept mentioning Friday, and made it sound as if the rest of the staff was going to be retained.

I'm surprised no one
