Report: Will Muschamp to stay at Texas
According to The Dallas Morning News, Will Muschamp will remain at Texas as defensive coordinator and head coach in waiting, which will take him out of the equation to become Tennessee's next coach. This from DMN's Chuck Carlton:
Muschamp clarified his intentions Wednesday night.
"I"m happy at Texas and plan to be here for a long time," Muschamp said through a Texas football spokesman.
He added that he has not interviewed for any other jobs nor does he have intention to do so.
If true, the Vols' attempts to find the next guy quickly have already hit a snag. Where do we go from here? The next most-discussed names are David Cutcliffe and Troy Calhoun...stay tuned.
UPDATE 11:55 PM EST: More confusing wordplay from a candidate, this time from Troy Calhoun via The Denver Post:
Anything that is just chatter," he said Wednesday evening. "I'm dedicated to the Air Force Academy. I have no idea where these things originate. I love being part of the process here at the Academy that is an influence on our great young people."
Athletic director Hans Mueh said he would neither "confirm or deny" that he has been asked by Tennessee officials for permission to talk with Calhoun. Mueh added: "I've been on vacation. I have nothing (to add to it)."
Calhoun said "no comment" when asked if he had been contacted by anyone representing Tennessee, but added, "There is nothing there."

But they didn't say that he turned down an offer
this sounds like the typical waffling during these coaching searches. if he actually turned tennessee down, i’m pretty sure they would say so
Exactly.
Coaches say these things all the time, then turn around and do the complete opposite. Also, why is Dallas Morning News reporting this and not a media outlet in Austin?

the Austin paper is reporting it too
but they are saying he was never interviewd. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t offered, because I think we all know he was. If he turned it down we would know, but simply saying he’s happy at Texas doesn’t cut it these days

I remember thinking the search last year was fun and exciting.
This is neither fun nor exciting.

For what it's worth
I had read on another website that even though DMN is reporting this now, the comment was made this morning before Hammy had even had his press conference at UT. If that’s the case, then of course he’s not been interviewed and he’s happy at Texas!
I wouldnt dismiss him so quickly
He turned around Air Force in one year and has been tho 3 straight bowl games. The year prior AFA was a mess, plus Calhoun was an NFL guy for a while before heading to Air Force and was the OC at Wake before that. His name may not be known but he is not a nobody head coach.

They have to say that if they don’t want the fans and admin turning on them. It’s all smoke and mirrors until someone else is hired. Coaches are masters of saying the obvious. It’s the stuff that happens after the reporter hangs up that is more interesting.
i'm clinging to your words like a life raft
I want to think there is more to the Muschamp situation.

Well crap !!
I was hoping Mike could sweet talk him. I guess we better get prepared for the Cutcliff era.

I hear so many conflicting reports on this, I don't know what to believe
I guess by Friday we’ll know what the truth is. That does sound a little lame though, so I’m not taking it as gospel. But if Patterson’s not interested, where do we turn?
I think either Calhoun or Edsall would be much preferable to Cutcliffe. But what do I know?

If we're gonna hire a second tier coach
between Cutcliffe and Calhoun, wouldn’t we take the more proven quantity?
Which is who?
8-5 at Air Force is just as impressive to me as 7-5 at Ole Miss, perhaps more so. Calhoun is also younger. Edsall may be preferable to either one, but I’m not quite familiar enough with him.

Calhoun
Also has a few years of NFL experience as an OC and held the same spot at Wake.

More wordplay from The Denver Post on Troy Calhoun:
Calhoun said “no comment” when asked if he had been contacted by anyone representing Tennessee, but added, “There is nothing there.”

ugh
can we just unload the bank for someone big? we’ve got an emergency and if can’t keep this recruiting class together it might set us back years. i hope lane kiffin can’t sleep and lives a miserable life
With Muschamp out
the recruiting class is gone. It’s time to panic when $3m a year won’t get your number one target.
Nobody wants to
“Kiffin” their current school and leave right now.
This is the worst possible timing.
Official MCM Hater!
Retire #9!
but a top assistant like an OC or DC somewhere
wouldn’t really be leaving high-and dry like a headcoach would be.

You're right.
Which makes me wonder if we really want Muschamp. Why does this guy not want to be a head coach now? Not that there is anything wrong with that. but maybe it’s not the makeup and desire we need.

Retire #9!
I think we're all tapping out for the night
More than 35,000 hits on RTT today, new record…thanks all
i wish it were under better circumstances

Our previous record
was Fulmer’s firing…twas just before my time here, but I think that was around 15k

Longhorn here-Why don't y'all go after Leach
We would love to see the Pirate help y’all put in a high powered offense and knock off FL and UGA. Just make sure to get a really good DC to join him (other than Monte Kiffin).
I think I speak for 99% of all football fans in saying that we will be cheering for every team to beat USC and for the NCAA to act on the long drawn out Bush stuff.

Red Raider here….I don’t think Tennessee wants a coach with baggage who’s replacing another coach with baggage. Plus, Leach is the middle of a nasty lawsuit and I’m sure Vols fan don’t need any more distractions. I’ll follow Leach wherever he goes…my guess is that Leach will sit out this year and hope next year a top 25 school has an open job.

i keep thinking
about how hamilton talked about UT as a “destination” job. well… the evidence to support that claim in the here and now seems a bit thin.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
do you think
he would do that after Fulmer getting the boot…………….
Kentucky bretheren united once again! Thanks Cal!
Hamilton will never call Cutcliffe
Because he knows if he calls Cut, there’s a very good chance that Cut calls the Trustees and says “You want me as HC? Then fire Hamilton and put Phil in as AD.” Cut’s not going to do any favors for the guy who fired Phil.
Are there separate searches?
In other words, is their an effort to find a new defensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator/def line coach and whatever else you need to replace after this b.s.?
Or is the idea to hire a head coach and then let him pick his assistants?
What about Gus Malzahn?
or Dan Mullen?
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.
-Hank Hill
I've brought up Mullen a couple times
Maybe we’re wary because we’d be doing just what Kiffin did to us.

do you think Bronco Mendenhall would come if we threw a bunch of cash at him?
I think he’s been stellar at BYU
i doubt it
He is a good coach but would be a bad fit

To be fair, I think I read that in MAD Magazine years ago.
It’s not original from me, at any rate. But hey, since when did originality stop anything on the net? ;-)
