The USC Presser and Why I Love T.J. Simers
I just thought I would give a little linky and some direction to those that missed this last night. The link is to Lane Kiffin's press conference at USC. If you would kindly fast forward your media player to the 17:40 mark of the video, you will observe two minutes of hard hitting journalism that will make you smile at first, and then frown at the realization of how we have all been manipulated over the last 14 months.
The reporter hounding Lane Kiffin regarding Ed Orgeron's shadiness is named T.J. Simers and works for the LA Times. He was named the 2000 California State Sportswriter of the Year and needs to replace John Adams pronto.
My favorite Simers quotes?
"Well, now you've just confused all of us"
"annnnnd, here comes Mike Garrett to save you"
For your viewing pleasure, Lane Kiffin's "you said, I said" skit.

Ranks right up there as one of the best 2 minutes of press conference EVA.

I know we are getting ready to move on, but Simers just does not like what USC has done, and it is extremely enjoyable.
Simers’ article proclaiming his love for “The Kid”

The Kid got flustered, waved his hands and began spewing gibberish

I'm just curious
why all the hate for Jon Adams? My impression was that you guys didn’t like him because he didn’t cow tow to Kiffin. Was that wrong?
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

He wasn't liked before Kiffin, either.
He tends to go all Finebaum, only not nearly so incendiary or so effective. I think a lot of it is the pressure of being a traditional media senior editor for a local sports outlet. The dwindling market for TM doesn’t make things any easier, and he tends to write things to get quick hits.
And actually, he was one of the most pro-Kiffin guys out there for a long time. It was his opportunity to get on a soapbox about Fulmer.

You're not the only one
I like him, too, most of the time. He’s very sarcastic. At one time I hated him because of it. I’ve somehow developed a taste for it, though. I think it was his appearances on the radio with Dave Hooker that did it for me. He was actually kind of funny. But I recognize that he’s widely despised by a lot of good people, and I can see why that is.

Geeze…. were we so blind that we missed this while he was here???? Damn All I can watch is about 2 min before I wanna puke! What a class act he is. Well USC you wanted him and now you got him so just remember you got what you wished for…. LOL I hope it blows up in their face!
In our defense,
That opening UT presser was the first time we’d heard those lines. We couldn’t have known they were canned. ;-)
And in his defense, he had effective coaches in place, working systems on offense and defense, upgraded recruiting, and a lot of signs pointing to promise. His departure completely undoes everything he claims to have built, but there were plenty of reasons to be pleased with the direction he was taking things at the time.
And fair to the players: they were the ones not getting arrested (well, at least those who were here before he came); they were the ones making the grades; and they were the ones turning in the extra practice time over the summer when coaches aren’t allowed to interfere. They deserve their fair share of credit for the turnaround.

I think everyone who didn't want to watch that press conference
but did so anyway left feeling much, much better about our overall situation
The really interesting thing is that Simers is a 100% SChill for the trOJies
He never had a bad word to say about Cheatie Petie. He had never heard of bu$h or Joe McSUV. He was dreadfully in love with Timmeh Floyd. I figured he would toss nothing but softball questions up to Cheatie Junior, but he actually waded in and asked a tough question or two.
Cheatie Petie never had a hard question to answer in all his time in LA, and that’s the fault of Simers (affectionately known as Slimers), so most Bruins were absolutely shocked that he was able to find a molecule or two of journalistic integrity.
I predict that the LA press will stay tough with Cheatie Junior for, oh, let’s say, about a day and a half. Then they will be kissing trOJie heinie like they’ve been doing for years. But it’s nice for the time being.
And once again, my hearty congratulations for no longer being associated with that guy. He never came close to having the class required to call himself a Volunteer. He proves the old adage about lipstick on a pig.
My new second favoriate team is....
the Tennessee Volunteers!!!
Bruins Nation is inviting you to the Dec 4th game against the U$C TrOJans at the Rose Bowl.
That really made me mad.
Why even bother with Press Conferences when some functionary can step in to end a line of questioning that gets uncomfortable for someone? The lack of national coverage of that little segment really bothered me and made me question major sports media integrity. “Let’s not let the USC folks get too uncomfortable by rehashing that segment on Sportscenter….we don’t want to lose access to USC altogether.” What a crock. The dude was double talking right before our eyes and he gets away with it. Double shame on us for letting him do it while he was here.
Someday we'll look back on this and plow into a parked car.
