WBIR: Cutcliffe to Tennessee (or not)
WBIR is reporting that Cutcliffe is returning to Tennessee to take the head coaching position vacated by Lane Kiffin. More as it develops.
[Note by Joel, 01/14/10 4:33 PM EST ] And as it develops, it gets foggier still. That same link now concedes conflicting reports, so hold your horses.
[Note by Will, 01/14/10 4:50 PM EST] Brent Hubbs of VolQuest ($) is reporting that Cutcliffe has denied taking the job...this story continues to be in motion...

golfballs03 is not Tyler Bray or his dad
Bray and his dad may be the happiest people in America about this hire
I'm on board
2 Mannings and a dramatic Ainge turnaround? Sure, I’ll buy in. Just as long as 3rd and Chavis stays in Baton Rouge.
Here we go again
Of course I’ll support Cutcliffe if he’s our coach, but seriously I do not want this.
a safe choice
and a bad one. fire mike hamilton. this is a disaster.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
so the net result
of firing fulmer was to drag the university through the mud, and then settle with a lesser coach of the exact same style. once i fix this broken storm window so i can open it, i will be jumping out of it.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Fulmer will replace Hamilton.
Hamilton failed himself. I bet he’s out of a job now.
I would bet as soon as Cutcliffe is signed, the next announcement will be a new AD.
I would put money on that.

I think it's a good decision.
Sorry Kippy but we’re not going to be the SEC school with the ex-XFL coach leading our program.
Look at the bright side...
… within a few years we should be able to get tickets at Pilot for free!
(So glad I stopped buying season tickets…)
Lou Brock loves Lamp.
This sucks
of course who knows if it is true?
Our QB position may look bright, but I think you can kiss any shot at a top 10 class goodbye.
I think with the position we were in
Letting Muschamp come here without the Texas/Georgia clause would be fine. Mack Brown isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and Mark Richt should turn the program around somewhat to keep his job.
i think we are just that desperate, that it might be worth the shot.
plus, he might get here and love it
You are right about the class getting ruined on Tuesday night
I just think that with Cut back, we are going to be a middle of the road SEC team until he leaves, thus setting us back even further. I do not see how this hire is positive to the future of our program. Yes damage control will be good, and traditions will be preserved, however I think a hot up and coming coordinator or HC at another school would be able to turn us around in a few years.
Any chance
we can get Trooper Taylor back in some form? I thought he never should have been let go.
(yes yes, I know I posted this under another topic, but now that this is news I doubt anyone will be able to answer)
Chris Low says not a done deal yet.
Cautions against jumping the gun on Cutcliffe. Says there are other alternatives out there UT is looking at.
Didnt Hamilton
say that they werent going to rush into anything (though time was of the essence)?
This seems like rushed to me, though Im not necessarily against it.

Nothing’s official. Per WBIR’s most recent note:
There are some conflicting reports—some 10News sources are indicating they don’t think it’s a done deal.
Horrible Move
Fire Mike Hamilton! He obviously can’t get the job done. I was fine with Calhoun, Edsall, Whittingham, but I am not fine with going back to the good ole boy days!

My initial reaction is that I agree
I understand the feeling of slipping back to what we know, I mean, we had Fulmer, and Cutcliffe worked for Fulmer, and then we fired Fulmer and are now hiring his second in command.
But still, Cutcliffe was solid. I still remember that opening game in . . . 2007? . . . when he first returned as OC? Against Cal? We had been starving for offense and on that day we gorged.

In a way I think your right
I am not against it but I dont know that Im for it just yet either. It seems rushed and it seems like falling back into the oldschool we were trying to avoid (he types as he looks to the right at the tradition youtube).
That said, he has almost always been a positive. Even at Mississippi he was better than he got credit for. Duke was outstanding last season (hey…its duke football, its not like you have a lot to work with).
In short, Im torn…
Torn is more than understandable
because until September rolls around, we won’t know anything tangible, and that will be true for anyone.

Ok here's the bottom line---
While Cutcliffe was in Tennessee the Vols were winning. Clutcliffe leaves not so much. Comes back, well u get the picture. I can’t say I’m sold on the idea either but you can’t argue with success. So who says the third time isn’t the charm? At least we get a good QB and eventually everything will pan out. Not a splash BUT almost guaranteed not to slither off to USC.LOL
I am not a "neuveau fair-weather fan"
And this would be a horrible idea.
I would rather rehire Fulmer.
Or just keep Kippy as HC. At least we don’t know what he can do.

I am in the same boat as gramsey
I have bled orange for all 32 years of my life, and I do not like this hire. Change can be a good thing, even though Kiffin was a pice of S^#T, and failed us. Going back to the same ole same ole which has not worked in some time is not he answer in MHO. I believe we need structure and tradition, but we also need some new blood and excitement, or we will wind up always being 3rd or 4th best in the SEC.
As OC
Nobody said he can’t coach a quarterback or coordinate an offense.
And I am sure he can recruit a quarterback. But we need more than that.

You knuckleheads haven't a clue! Check his record at UT! GREAT CHOICE!
Now that I’ve got your attention, please check the Vols record during his tenure at TN and then check those times before, in between, and after. He’s a great choice for us. He’s THE reason we won a national title in ’98.
by alencosoft on Jan 14, 2010 4:45 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
But
He was a coordinator not the coach. If you take a look at his record as head coach (more applicable), you will see that he is nothing more than mediocre.
Bad Hire!
Luck O' the Irish
THE Miami Dolphins
He won at Ole Miss and Duke.
Not exactly powerhouses. With UT’s facilities, etc. who’s to say hwo’ll he do? And he’ll be here as long as we want/need him, rather than bolting to USC/Texas/Notre Dame/wherever.
53-44, 3 losing seasons - Not impressive at all
When you play it safe, you get mediocrity
Luck O' the Irish
THE Miami Dolphins
He took ole miss
to four bowls in six years, which is the best record since the 60s. As for Duke, its Duke. Winning more than a game or two is considered success there.
check his record as a head coach
Duke (4-8, 5-7) Ole Miss, I’ll be kind and say an AVERAGE of 7 wins a season during his six years there (his last season was 4-7.) This will wrap Tennessee in a nice warm blanket of mediocrity for another ten years. And if Cutcliffe learned anything from Fulmer he is probably negotiating himself a LONG-TERM contract with a HUGE penalty to prevent UT from terminating him after 3 seasons of MORAL VICTORIES. But then again, UT doesn’t fire mediocre coaches. They embrace them, because they’re part of the family. Go vols.
check the schools at which he earned that record
Ole miss was not good before he got there, and then he was at Duke. The last person to win at Duke was Spurrier.
Why would you want the TV and the stereo on at the same time?
'Cause I like to party.
they did win
back-to-back conference games for the first time since Stevey was there (that may be a slight exaggeration)
Why would you want the TV and the stereo on at the same time?
'Cause I like to party.
GSU you say check the schools record before he got there
Is it not the coaches job to make that school better? the records vol95 shows are not very good no matter what they were the previous year
Ole Miss
was not that bad when Cutcliffe got there. Tuberville left some recruits and was coming off 2 straight bowl wins. He left the program in worse shape than he found it.
by OxfordAndrew on Jan 14, 2010 7:27 PM EST up reply actions
That is kind of my point
YES he was great, was being the key word. But come on 98 was a looooong time ago. Just because it worked then in this ever evolving game does not mean it will repeat itself. Also our recruting was better in those days, the last few years with Phil (who I do like) our recruting class was average at best when you are shooting for a NC. I do not see how he can right our ship. Maybe with some good coordinators and position coaches it can be done, but I guess I am still not sold as of yet.
I say one more time for the record I hope I am wrong and he makes me eat my words. Bottom line I will support to the fullest whomever the coach may be. Go Vols
This probably needs a "yet" in there somewhere...

Shula bridged the gap between Price and Saban
We need to reconcile ourselves to the fact that despite what we may think, the college football coaching community obviously does not look at this as a primo job. Plus, we’re coach shopping at the absolute worst time of year.
Then just give the job to Kippy
If we are gonna go that route, give it to someone who is unproven as a HC, but has NFL experience. If we are to just assume we are bridging the gap until Peyton retires.

I thought Cutcliffe was in bad health and that’s why he didn’t take a head coaching job a few years back. Is he all better now because this is going to be high stress!
He stepped down from an assistant coach position at Notre Dame with Weis

Its not that I'm totally against Cutcliffe
or want Calhoun, but am I the only one that is embarrassed that we just got (reportedly) turned down by the Air Force coach. I mean we are TENNESSEE, a top 15 program and we have already been turned down twice. I don’t really see a great fit out there anywhere, so the thought of Cutcliffe coming doesn’t anger me, but this is just really embarrassing that we are getting publicly denied like this.

Maybe. I understand where you're coming from, but it's not necessarily a bad rejection.
He gets $1.5 mil at USAFA and is pretty well guaranteed longevity there. He’s also a USAFA guy, which is similar to us when we hired Fulmer as a UT guy. Granted, the 1.5 isn’t as much as what UT would offer, but it’s a nice check at any rate, and happiness is worth something too. Especially if his family likes it there.

Cut is old school……..Phil Fulmer. Right now though after getting burned by that sexy thing………I am ready for stability. I am ready for someone to love UT football and to hold it dear. He really did alot of great thngs for Duke football and I think some are forgetting that. I am ready to embrace it and hope five years down the road we will have a man named Manning coaching UT :)
