GVX: Cutcliffe to Tennessee nearly official
Deep breath. GVX, who was saying five minutes ago that no announcement would be made today, is now citing a source saying that Tennessee will be hiring David Cutcliffe to be the Vols' new head football coach "barring a last-second snag in negotiations." Hamilton will neither confirm nor deny, and the most recent report is that Cut has denied it. So take it for whatever it's worth.
Can we watch the basketball game in peace now, please?

Here we go again.
I sure Hope Cutcliff surprises me.
Because
This is a step backwards. Cut is a great OC and QB coach. He is a terrible head coach and recruiter. He got fired at Ole Miss after the recruits Ogre brought in had matriculated.
Still don’t understand the reluctance to hire Mike Leach. He’s is a proven offensive mastermind and has a chip on his shoulder the size of Lane Kiffin’s ego. He is also extremely loyal, evidenced by him shunning other job offers while at Texas Tech.
I’m of the same mind as bulldurham. This has Fulmer’s hand prints all over it. He has been working behind the scenes to get Hamilton fired so he can take his spot, just like he did to Majors.
I called the Alumni department today and told them I will not be donating a dime nor will I renew my season tickets if they bring back Cutcliffe. I am done with this homer mentality. Yes, in retrospect, Kiffin was a terrible hire. That doesn’t mean we need to knee jerk react and hire re-hire the good ’ol boys from back in the day.
I would curse but since I have respect for the moderators and there are much more important things going on like the horror in Haiti, I will just say my prayers are with their country.
Thank you very little.

It is a little Shula-like.
but in more ways than people might realize, what was David Cutcliffe’s alma mater?

Orgreon was after Cutcliffe at Ole Miss
Ole Miss had one of the best runs in its history under Cutcliffe FWIW. He was fired after one bad season.

this is just wrong
get your facts straight

Yikes
Had a little too much Johnnie Walker tonight.
Upon searching the Wiki, I am wrong about Cut following Ogre.
However, here are Cut’s yearly records at Ole Miss:
1999: 8-4
2000: 7-5
2001: 7-4
2002: 7-6
2003: 10-3
2004: 4-7
2003 was a good year, but I would hardly call this one of the best runs in history. National championships in 1959, 1960 and 1962 was a good run. Sweet Archie Manning.
Thank you very little.

I said ONE of the best, not THE best
My main point was that 5 winning seasons in a row at Ole Miss is about as solid a run as anyone there has had not named Jon Vaught.

For thoose blinded by the man behind the current

Dan Willmams and Hardesty are the real deal ! Go Vols !
Calling statiticians
Can someone please tell me what Tennessee’s record is since 1992 against Florida, Georgia, and Alabama with Cutcliffe on the staff?
Just curious and too lazy to dig it up myself…..

Cutcliffe has never lost to Georgia
Tied Bama in 93, Lost in 94, won four straight then split in 06/07
Florida…well, he’s 1-7. But no one around here is much better.

There are lots and lots of non-Florida feel good numbers about Cutcliffe
which we’ll look at more once all this becomes official

+1
I’m not as negative as others. He’ll need a defensive coordinator and some recruiters, but this won’t be a bad move imo.
The worst part of it is we’re back to having someone who won’t stand up and say anything when other coaches disrepect our program a la Urbz back in the 59-20 game throwing TD passes with less than 2 minutes left.

"Running the score up"
“Running the score up” isn’t a matter of disrespect as much as its a matter of classnessless. Call me a purist, but you play the game for 60 minutes—not until you get a 10 or 14 pt lead. If you don’t want TDs through the air scored against you in the last 2 minutes, play some D and stop that from happening. JMO, man.
Good move
Cutcliffe will return honor and respectability to Tennessee football.

Yeah. Good move...
I like David Cutcliffe. He wasn’t too successful at Ole Miss, but who really is?

view from the outside,
Looking in to your program, I think you might be better off without Kiffin. I feel about him as most feel about Calipari, hes just one step ahead of the NCAA. I just think you should be happy to get rid of him. Also, it doesn`t matter who you hire, he already has one victory. I`m sure he can beat my beloved wildcats. Good luck guys.
So I guess I was wrong about the whole Lane Kiffin thing
…said the Billy Gillispie fan. ;)
Sorry guys – keep your heads up!
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

I don't hate Cut, but I'm also very not thrilled
I’ll agree with some others, this feels like going backwards. Weren’t we tired of the old offense? To be fair, I haven’t been watching Duke, is their offense any good?

Good Grief!!
I hate to think that this is the best we can do! I think Hamilton needs to be replaced.
I want to thank Rocky Top Talk for being on top of this.
Round And Round
If Cutcliffe is hired, Hamilton should be fired. Tennessee is a top notch program. There is no reason to settle for retreads. My gues is there are many college football coaches that would jump at the chance to move to Rocky Top. Why bring back someone who has shown no success anywhere he has been the Head Coach. Hamilton needs to expand his thinking a bit. Has he called Patterson (TCU), Peterson (Boise State), Harbaugh (Stanford), Fitzgerald (Northwestern), Mendenhall (BYU), jut to name a few? Cutcliffe is a serious step back to yesteryear.
"My gues is there are many college football coaches that would jump at the chance to move to Rocky Top. "
The evidence is to the contrary.
Lovie Smith
The latest rumor…..anybody but Coach Cut
Please God don't let this happen
I don’t care if Cutcliffe has over-achieved at Duke – whatever that means. He hasn’t proven himself as a legitimate head coach. And, unlike Kiffin (sorry, I know), he hasn’t proven himself as a great recruiter, and he’s not bringing in an all-star coaching staff. If we make this move, the worst thing we could do is fire Hamilton and hire Fulmer – because Cutcliffe will need to be fired very soon and Fulmer won’t do it. I get it: we need a coach – and now. But, we can’t possibly be looking for a long-term replacement right now – the timing couldn’t be worse (good looking out, Lane). It sucks, but we really just need an interim HC (without calling him that) so we can stall and have time to find an adequate replacement next year (another reason I don’t want Cutcliffe – I don’t want to hose him like that).
I still don't understand why so many people want to see Cut
He’s proven to be a great OC, and I think he’s probably a great X’s and O’s HC. But he’s well-known as a terrible recruiter (and thus will not be able to keep up with Florida and Bama as a HC) and he has health issues. Not an encouraging hire, should it happen. MAYBE if he gets a stellar recruiting staff around him, he could have success (like I said, I think he can handle the X’s and O’s). But I just don’t know if a coach like Cut will be able to draw talent, no matter who he has recruiting with him.
I hear rumors about Lovie and Edsall. Would be quite pleased with either one. Please let it be one of them and not Cut.
Actually, I’d rather have Kippy than Cut. I’d rather have a great assistant who’s unproven as a head coach than have a head coach who has a pretty distinct ceiling at 9-3.

Any truth to the rumor
That Utah’s Kyle Whittingham was contacted or is he a serious candidate? Cutcliffe looks to be the guy.
Well, as you can see
Lots of us are praying Cutcliffe isn’t really going to be the guy. That said, I haven’t heard anything official about Whittingham. As you may’ve seen, Wes Rucker (Chatt paper) tweeted that we’ve contacted Muschamp, Calhoun, Cut, Dooley, and Kippy. Rumor is we’ve contacted Golden and Edsall (both great choices). I wouldn’t mind seeing us contact Whittingham, but I haven’t heard anything I trust regarding it.

Torn on this...
+’s: 1. He’s safe. Not going to be leaving us for USC whith national signing day at point blank range. 2. Tyler Bray already kinda looks like Peyton Manning. 3. He’s had one bad season at Ole Miss. 4. He’s classy and respectable. Basically, he’s not Lane Kiffin. 5. He really turned us around as a OC in 06/07. Erik Ainge’s turnaround was amazing.
-‘s: 1. Seriously? We fired Fulmer, for a reason. No need to go back to 9 win seasons during good years. Hiring Phil back would essentially be the same move. 2. He’s not a long term answer. He has some health problems. 3. It’s just not exciting. 4. Seperating from somebody like this would be difficult and painful similar to the Fulmer cut. 5. Good coordinator doesn’t always mean good head coach. Many have failed.
P.S. To the person who said Leach was loyal: Dude is notorious for shopping for better jobs. He didn’t get any real offers while at Tech, he was just always in the conversation because he was out pimping himself. It’s probably 80% of the reason he’s unemployed right now. Tech got pissed about it and as soon as he slipped up they fired him.
