True or False? War Eagle Repeat at Neyland?
http://www.trackemtigers.com/2010/10/26/1775763/eagle-neyland-stadium
After you have read the link above, can someone who went to the game comment on whether or not this is true? And if it is true, what do you think about it? Is this something you would like to see continued? Something that seems kind of stolen?
No offense intended certainly, but I was really surprised when I read that post. At first I thought it can't be true-- no way Tennessee would try to replicate the War Eagle flyover, right? Help me out. Tell me this is all a lie.

Wait a sec.....
Aren’t you idiots the Tigers?!? What’s with you Alabama schools and mascot/nickname confusion?
Also, didn’t realize y’all had patented Eagles. Someone better tell the hundreds of sporting events not held in Auburn that use them each year. Some of our currency, the Presidential Seal, Philly’s NFL franchise, and some others might have something to say here……

Hello ladies. Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. Sadly, he isn't me.
Jesus guys...
The eagle’s name is Challenger, and he’s a BALD EAGLE from Pigeon Forge TN and the American Eagle Foundation… which is a nonprofit dedicated to the recovery of bald eagle populations. He has participated in several World Series, Pro Bowls, and at least one Final Four in addition to a significant number of SEC football games.
It’s being going on since 1993, and is most certainly not a ripoff of your War Eagle thing.

kinda naked looking without the JUMBO tron there huh?
And yes, they’ve done it once a year at a home game since I could remember.
When they did this last year and the year before, did everyone think Auburn first?

maybe I did the first time I saw it, but the two events are very different.
which two events?
I’m confused.
Maybe I don’t think of Auburn because I haven’t been.

Confirmed
Yeah, this did happen. Admittedly, Auburn’s tradition came to mind as I watched the eagle circle the stadium and then land on the trainer’s arm. Regardless of the tradition’s origins, the crowd loved it. I was at the game with my stepson, an Arizona State graduate and PAC-10 fan. It was his first SEC game. He asked me if the bald eagle fly over was done at all home games. I told him it wasn’t…..and that Auburn does it every home game.
At halftime of the ’Bama game, the Pride of the Southland Band did THEIR famous circle drill. I sure hope no one borrows that from us…….

You know
You would think a school with such an esteemed vetriniary program would be able to tell the difference between a Bald Eagle and a Golden Eagle as Caban so astutely pointed out. Fitting that we use the symbol of freedom and this country and they use the symbol of a 1970’s off road vehicle.
In light of the confusion, this is akin to us as Vol fans getting upset at every university founded after us that uses a canine as an on-field mascot or refers to a part of their campus as “The Hill”.

But we do have a bald eagle that flies around before the games
There’s a rotation, and all of our War Eagle mascots have been golden eagles, but one of the flying eagles is a bald eagle. See:

Just a question....
I apologize, I did not expect such a defensive reaction.
This is an Auburn tradition that we take a lot of pride in – one that’s usually ranked among the best traditions in all of college football. Some of you seem to not be aware of this which mystifies me a little. I was just asking a question. You answered “yes”. I will leave it at that.
We have a bald eagle, as well as the more traditional golden eagle. Here’s a clip of Spirit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjTuemF1Rd4
And so many messages ridiculing our mascot and battle cry! Wow… You don’t see any duplicity in your own mascot?
I know this is a tough, transitional season for you guys, but I think Derek Dooley will be a great coach. I see a good future for the Vols. Best of luck the rest of the season!

According to Wikipedia (I know it is not a definitive source, feel free to link me to one if Wiki is wrong)...
Auburn began its “tradition” of pre-game eagle free-flights all the way back in 2000:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Eagle
During the 2000 football season, War Eagle VI began a tradition of performing a free flight before a home football game. War Eagle VI, and later other eagles kept by in the Southeastern Raptor Rehabilitation Center in Auburn, flew around the stadium before landing on the field as the crowd chanted “War Eagle”.
Eagles have been doing that at Neyland at least as far back as the early ’90s, maybe longer.
So please quit copying us.

Congrats, your awesome tradition turned ten years old this year.
We’ve had bald eagles circling Neyland and landing on the field during the national anthem for at least seventeen years now.
Do you guys also plant a spear at midfield and call that your own? Does your band spell out “Tigers” with a celebrity dotting the “i”?

That's great
I see they’re using the word “tradition” loosely. Any lists of traditions older than 10 years old?

Those links are funny, by the way
Bleacher Report:
The New York Yankees tried to co-op this tradition after Sept. 11 with Challenger the Patriot. But there’s only one war eagle.
Yeah, the Yankees tried to co-opt a “tradition” that was one year old in 2001. Challenger has been flying into sports stadiums since 1993.

That makes them legitimate.
It also makes it really awkward when they start publishing original content that’s WaPo articles in full.

More info on Challenger from his website...
“Challenger” is named in honor of the crew of the space shuttle, and has been making educational appearances throughout the country since 1993. Acting as an ambassador for his species, “Challenger” has raised a great level of national public awareness about the need to restore and protect America’s eagles, natural resources and environment. The bald eagle is still a “threatened” species throughout the lower 48 states, and much of its nesting and feeding habitat is being encroached upon by humans.
“Challenger” is the first bald eagle in U.S. history trained to free-fly into major league sports stadiums during the presentation of the National Anthem. He has participated in five MLB World Series (2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1998), three NFL Pro-Bowls (2004, 2003, 2002), 1999 Fiesta Bowl, and 2005 NCAA Men’s Final Four Basketball Tournament, as well as sports events for the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants, Green Bay Packers, Anaheim Angels, Buffalo Bills, Florida Marlins, Indianapolis Colts, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees, Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, LSU Tigers, Florida Seminoles, Georgia Southern Eagles, Carson-Newman Eagles, and University of Tennessee Volunteers.
He has also performed free-flight demonstrations at the Bass Masters Classic, Para-Olympic Games opening ceremony at Olympic Stadium in Atlanta, Disney’s Animal kingdom opening ceremony, World War II Memorial groundbreaking ceremony, White House to mention a few. In addition, he as accompanied the Olympic Flag on a special tour around the State of Georgia, and has appeared on numerous national TV shows, including The David Letterman Show, CBS This Morning and Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures.
That’s quite a list for you Abuurn fans to go after. Pay special attention to the Para-Olympians too. You really don’t want them stealing your tradition…..
Shame on the 1999 Fiesta Bowl, 1998 World Series, as well as every time he flew into Neyland prior to 2000. We shouldn’t be stealing Auburn’s rich “tradition” before it’s created.

We may not be able to play football (currently,) but we can Google and argue with anyone in the country. Go back to Track ’Em Tigers and tell them to simmer down on the accusations of copying your age-old tradition that will be old enough to drive in 2016.

I like how that NBC article
Has running through the T behind dancing the Haka (started in 2007 at Hawaii) at 27th. To me, a lot about a tradition’s power is it’s visibility. You ask a casual fan outside of the South what Auburn does before a game, they’ll probably say something about a Tiger. You ask people who flies an eagle around their stadium before a game, you’ll get a lot of wrong answers. Ask people who runs through the T. Boo-yah.
One more reason to serve as proof that NBC doesn’t know jack crap about sports.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hawaii lifted it in part from New Zealand.
Their rugby team has been doing it for ages. (and yes, I’m aware of the cultural overlap)

they totally lifted it from New Zealand there is not much of a question about that
The all blacks even have their own haka that Hawaii has essentially plagiarized step for step. They saw how cool it was and decided to do it to entertain their fans. It actually pisses off a lot of the Maori in New Zealand because it is not just “something neat” to them
Living in Alabama is like living 50 years in the past, they are still just as racist, just as educated, the state constitution forbids any kind of public transportation, and all they can talk about is Bear Bryant
it is sad because the All Blacks haka was written expressly for them
and it is something special to them and has a lot to do with their culture. The dances that the Hawaiians historically were different and so the hawaiian haka is just a cheap imitation. It doesn’t even look nearly as cool when they do it compared to the All Blacks and I think this is at least partially because it is just theatrics for them
Living in Alabama is like living 50 years in the past, they are still just as racist, just as educated, the state constitution forbids any kind of public transportation, and all they can talk about is Bear Bryant
I don’t think the Hawaiians would go on an All Blacks site and accuse them of stealing the haka though. . .(cough)
Living in Alabama is like living 50 years in the past, they are still just as racist, just as educated, the state constitution forbids any kind of public transportation, and all they can talk about is Bear Bryant
and then accuse them of being touchy...
when they successfully point out how you were being touchy(and so very wrong)
I’m gonna send a cease and desist letter to Georgia, Mississippi State for using canine mascots… I just hope I can hide it from Texas A&M.
that is a good idea because A & M
is EXTREMELY touchy about Reveille
Living in Alabama is like living 50 years in the past, they are still just as racist, just as educated, the state constitution forbids any kind of public transportation, and all they can talk about is Bear Bryant

Since we're talking about who has the most traditional tradition......
I’ve never uploaded a You Tube video in my life….but I got a nice one at this year’s UT vs. UF game. It is the portion of the pregame ceremony where The Pride of the Southland Band plays the opponent’s fight song and then swings into Rocky Top as 100K sing along………there are quite a few of similar ones on You Tube, but mine is really clear video-wise and there is lots of participation in singing the Rocky Top refrain. Watch it in 720HD and turn up the volume.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Rjxw8EByTY
Our running through the T is my favorite pregame Vol tradition, but this one is special, too. Can you top this, our Auburn friends?
Shhhhhh
Don’t tell them about the “T”. They might try running through an “A” knowing what we know about them copying traditions…..
Aside: I would love to see them run through an “A”. Leave the tunnel, go to the apex, make the turn and run right back into the other tunnel. Linemen take the shortcut through the middle……
