On Directv CBS college sports is channel 613

I think you have to have the Choice Xtra Package

If you can't be kind at least be vague. Go Vols !

When I had DirecTV, I had it

Now I have FIOS and I don’t :( Holding out hope for a Justintv link or something…

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I bet that atdhe will update with links later on.

Right now, they only have links up through the 1:00 games.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I have it with DirecTV via the Sports Pack

which is $12 per month…so if you’ve got DirecTV, in theory you could add that package and then cancel it tomorrow and essentially see the game (and TCU-Utah) as PPV for $12…which is a lot cheaper than the regular PPV college football options.

I don't get CBS College sports

Is there another way I can watch the game? I don’t see it listed on ESPN3 or channelsurfing.net, which are my usual go-to sites when I can’t get the game. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

by STLvolfan on Nov 6, 2010 11:58 AM EDT reply actions

Wait on it.

Both Channelsuring and ATDHE update the college listings as the game goes on. They have to wait until the game streamers tell them where they’re going after the early games are done.

Hmm...

I was doing some last-minute switching this morning and changed from Michigan to Illinois…whoops…

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 12:03 PM EDT reply actions

Heh.

I purposely stopped myself from switching an Illinois upset pick to Michigan. Good thing I only have one point on them.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Illinois is driving right down the field, though

I’ve heard about how bad Michigan’s defense is…and I’m seeing that right now.

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

That was why I picked the upset.

Michigan has had problems when facing a team with actual talent. It becomes a Illinois talent vs. Ron Zook argument, but hey.

Aaaaaand Illinois runs the screen.

Every team runs a screen in that situation. It’s a law.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

No freaking kidding.

When a Greg Robinson defense is completely prepared for your play, you’re being too predictable.

Vandy forces a 3 and out!

Florida’s offense still sucks!

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 12:24 PM EDT reply actions

In other action:

Michigan tosses an interception, though to be fair, it was deflected. And NCState takes a 7-0 lead on Clemson in early action.

NCState’s running game looks to be more than Clemson can handle early on. This might get ugly in the second half if Clemson’s line can’t find a way to stand their ground.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I swear that Florida's I-line practices ways to draw offsides calls.

A clear flinch by the right tackle drew Vandy, and Vandy got called for it.

Remember when Pouncey 1.0 would cock his head before the snap?

7-6

C’mon Zookers, score touchdowns.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 12:34 PM EDT reply actions

There are some dedicated refs in the Clemson game.

The Clemson QB fumbles on a scramble, and the refs dive into the resulting dog pile with as much vigor as I’ve ever seen. You’d have thought that they were going for the ball too.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 12:37 PM EDT reply actions

Clemson is killing themselves.

They got the fumble back, but then had a delay of game, nearly threw a pick, and missed a medium-short field goal attempt.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Defense optional in Ann Arbor

These games are always fun to watch.

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

Rich Rod is just the anti-Big Ten coach

Although I suppose Joe Tiller was there for a while.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

And Clemson blocks an NCState field goal attempt.

This is another ugly-ish game, but one where a lot of near scores are thwarted by sudden problems.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

Defense still optional in Ann Arbor

Also, “huge” and “yooge” are not the same thing.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

Is Roundtree having a "huge" or "yooge" game?

I’m tempted to say “yooge,” personally.

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Tajh Boyd is in for Clemson.

Evidently, Kyle Parker threw one too many picks trying to throw across his body on a scramble.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 1:19 PM EDT reply actions

Huh. Kick-catchiing interference against Clemson.

Don’t see that often. On the upside for NCState, they had muffed the fair catch and Clemson had recovered. It was a dicey call, but Clemson doesn’t have too much room to complain.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

For some reason

Every time I try to switch to an ACC game and find it blacked out, I’m surprised. I keep forgetting BC is in this town.

Clemson trails 7-0 at the half.

They had (another) TD pass called back on a holding penalty. Then two sacks in a row killed their FG chances.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, I'm sure

I’d imagine the Big Ten or Big XII have, because they have South Dakota State on their schedules regularly, and the Dakota schools always tend to be good for an upset. Check the Big Ten in 2007, I’d be surprised if they didn’t have 2 losses.

Serious question: what happens if the SEC does not have enough bowl-eligible teams?

UK, UT, Vandy, UGA, and Ole Miss could all not get to 6 wins. I expect some of them will given the amount of times they play each other down the stretch, but it’s a distinct possibility.

Also, has one division of the conference ever been as bad as the East is this year?

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 1:46 PM EDT reply actions

Depends.

If there are enough 6-6 and better teams to qualify for all bowl games, then the SEC tie-ins pick from the remaining at-larges. If not, then they go to the 5-7 teams and pick from SEC teams first.

That’s why Tennessee could still make a bowl game even if they go 3-1 in November. Which would be embarrassing, but the extra practices are totally worth it.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd heard some discussion of 5-7 teams making bowls

Guess I hadn’t internalized it as a serious possibility, though.

If UK gets their act together and wins today, they’ll get to 6 wins. UGA will probably need to beat GA Tech in Athens as I don’t think they can take Auburn on the road. Ole Miss still has LSU and Mississippi State, so I don’t know that they’ll get there. Barring a 41-point rally in the 2nd half, Vandy is getting loss #7 today, so they’re out.

The Vols? I just honestly don’t know. I still think anything from 3-9 to 6-6 is on the table.

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, 5-7 is probably most likely for Tennessee

with 6-6 being second-most likely. I think the Vandy and Memphis games are near-guarantees.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

UK's up 28-14 now.

So at least that one’s on target.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Vanderbilt is absolutely horrible

But I’ve seen good Tennessee teams struggle with Vandy…so I can’t chalk that up as a win quite yet. Ole Miss and Kentucky are certainly good enough to beat us in Knoxville, I just don’t know that it’ll happen.

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Is CBS CS a premium channel? Does anyone know if in the Knoxville market the game might be shown on regular CBS or is CBSCS the blanket channel?

Why are fundamentals so difficult to teach?

Illinois’ tackling absolutely stinks, and it’s all for reasons that are supposedly taught from Pop Warner on.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:15 PM EDT reply actions

The announcer's observation that Illinois is returning a lot of defensive players next year

should not give Illinois fans much hope. Most of these guys are probably too deeply set into bad fundamentals to be of any use.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

That seriously surprised me.

I didn’t expect Baylor to be in letdown mode after beating a clearly inferior Texas team last week.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Which raises the question about just how bad Texas actually is

They talked on Gameday this morning about Mack Brown having completely lost the team

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Which is stupid on the players' end if true.

Brown isn’t the problem on that team, and they can always get a new O-coordinator next year.

10-0 NCState.

Yet another turnover in the red zone.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

Clarification:

Clemson fumbled near the 10 yard line after NC State had scored. State just got a first down for some breathing room.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

And State turns it right back over to Clemson.

That’s something like the 8th fumble on the day between the two teams.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

TD Clemson.

Soon to be 10-7, assuming all goes well. For once, they don’t fumble in the red zone.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

After throwing 9 INTs the last two weeks

BJ Coleman is 9 of 21 for 67 yards in the first half against Auburn…but hey, no picks.

(I never had a problem with BJ, but the “We would’ve been so much better if we’d kept him around!” local minority gets on my nerves)

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

One of my favorite box scores of all-time, from last week

when Chatty played Elon (the artists formerly known as the Fighting Christians):

Coleman 33 of 63, 386 yards, 5 TD, 5 INT

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Honest question:

Who would have been a better option this year, Simms or Coleman?

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

In his second year in the system

Probably Coleman. But that, I imagine, would be the only edge. Bray probably still would’ve taken over by nowish.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I say Simms

to be fair, today is the first time i’ve actually watched UTC for more than five minutes, but when you complete 33 passes for only 386 yards, you’re not going downfield much…same thing they’re doing against Auburn. Simms has a better arm and more sense

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Both kickers have missed a FG in the second half now

Michigan still leads by 7. Illinois is quite fortunate, and they need to wake up right now or they’re going to let the game get away from them.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

I've quit on that game.

I just can’t stand the utter lack of defensive technique by either team.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Because I’m in ACC country. So this is really the only thing left.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

13-7 NC State.

A nice, long drive for the Wolfpack stalled in the red zone, but they got the figgie and gave their defense a much needed rest.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

Hahahaha, Michigan

Tate Forcier comes in for one play and does the ol’ “I’m going to try to pump fake but fumble instead” play.

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

RichRod LOL

Denard Robinson gets pulled for reasons unknown, and it’s possible that Tate Forcier has money on the game. He straight up dropped the ball with no contact.

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

Might as well.

It’s not like he’ll get paid for football any other way.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

At or near the top of my college football wish list

is for the networks to somehow work out an agreement where the best game of the day gets an 8 PM kickoff, the second best game a 3:30, the third best game at noon, and we just snake back and forth for awhile. The noon games this year have been awful, and as usual there’s two games at 3:30 and at least three at 7-8 that I want to watch.

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

There's always the competition angle

They want to have better games than competing networks. Which I’m fine with. But your suggestion seems to make perfect sense for ESPN/ABC. Three channels broadcast nationally, all owned by the same company. Best game be ABC’s 8 PM, second best be ABC’s 3:30, third best ESPN’s noon, fourth ESPN2’s 3:30, fifth ESPN’s 8, sixth ESPN2’s 8, seventh ESPN’s 3:30, eighth ESPN2’s noon. That way, they keep their best games from competing with each other. Oh, and by putting the third best at noon, they probably have a better game than anyone else in the country in that time slot. So no outside competition.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

And Clemson shanks a short field goal attempt.

That nice field position yet again goes to waste, and State holds onto their 13-7 lead.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Stats of note from the picks this week:

89% like Alabama over LSU
96% like Stanford over Arizona

Both much higher than I thought they’d be

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

The biggest problem in the NC State / Clemson game

is that neither offensive line is playing well. They’re inconsistent, which has killed a lot of drives.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

Kentucky's gassed.

Their bye week comes the week before they play Tennessee.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Kentucky is a little overrated

Because of their performances against USC and Auburn. Both teams were in letdown/lookahead situations (USC had just come off a win over Alabama, Auburn had UK sandwiched between Arkansas and LSU) and both teams racked up huge halftime leads before letting off the gas and letting Kentucky back into the game. But they’ve been crushed by Florida, Georgia, and Ole Miss, none of which are good teams.

Keep in mind that they lost as many starters as we did last year, from a team that was no better than ours. I just hope they don’t figure things out on their bye.

Utah fumble

TCU recovers inside the Ute 30. For a million reasons, TCU is going to run the score up on these boys like there’s no tomorrow

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

As they should.

Not that it’s sporting, but they have a shot at the NC game and, being a midmajor, need every little edge they can get.

Thanks, BCS!

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus

I’d be a little pissed about the whole Utah to the Pac-10 thing…not so much at Utah for going, but this is a pretty good opportunity to give the whole conference the middle finger and show them they picked the wrong team

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Utah was a great pick on many levels.

They’re still a top-10 team at the moment, they’re a good research school, and they’re good in a lot of other sports. All are PAC-10ish benchmarks.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I agree completely

but TCU does not, and they’ll spend the rest of the afternoon explaining why, cause who knows when they’ll see Utah again.

Also, if this was one year later, people would be making the “see, they throttled a Pac-10 team!” argument…but right now, they get no credit for it.

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

TD next play

I’ve enjoyed having you on my TV for one quarter, TCU-Utah, but we’re going back to the SEC now.

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 4:25 PM EDT reply actions

So, with TCU and Boise dominating, a little BCS question

Suppose (as I think is fairly likely) that Wisconsin, Ohio State, TCU, Boise, and Stanford win out and the Auburn/Alabama loser doesn’t lose again. There are four BCS at large spots that must then be divided amongst these six teams:

undefeated TCU
undefeated Boise
one-loss Auburn or two-loss Alabama
one-loss Ohio State
one-loss Stanford
two-loss Big XII runner up

Who gets the four spots? I think the Big XII is out, but somebody else is getting hosed, especially if Alabama beats Auburn. All five of those teams would be extremely deserving. I imagine Boise may be the odd man out as well.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

I expect them to win the conference

But if they have two losses (the second in the CG), I could see them making it over Stanford. If Oregon is in the title game, the Pac-10 has to pick a non-AQ this year.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Something like this...

BCSCG: Oregon vs SEC
Rose: Big Ten Champ vs
Orange: ACC Champ vs Big East Champ
Sugar: SEC at-large vs
Fiesta: Nebraska/Oklahoma vs

The Rose Bowl would take Nebraska in a heartbeat if Oklahoma won the Big 12. If Ohio State doesn’t get the Big 10 title, they’d go Fiesta, and TCU goes to the Sugar.

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Rose Bowl can't do that

They’re obligated to take a non-AQ if they have a free spot. And even if a non-AQ is in the title game, I think they’d take Stanford over Nebraska to keep Big X/Pac 10. And I actually would like to see Wisconsin and Stanford play this year.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

does the Sugar Bowl have the same obligation to take a non-AQ?

Rose and Sugar would get first choice with their teams in the title game

by Will Shelton on Nov 6, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

No.

The Rose is the only one that has such a designation this cycle, and it’s specifically in case the Rose Bowl loses a team to the NC game.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope, just the Rose

Because they’ve never done it before. The Sugar had Utah two years ago

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess, by the way

If TCU finishes ahead of Alabama:

NCG: Oregon/TCU
Rose: Wisconsin/Stanford
Sugar: Alabama/Ohio State
Orange: Virginia Tech/Auburn
Fiesta: Nebraska/West Virginia

If TCU finishes behind Alabama:

NCG: Oregon/Alabama
Rose: Wisconsin/TCU
Sugar: Auburn/Ohio State
Orange: Virginia Tech/Stanford (they could also choose Boise here, but Boise’s chances are hurt by VT likely winning the ACC)
Fiesta: Nebraska/West Virginia

This, of course, assumes the computers like TCU better than Boise and Alabama beats Auburn. However, flipping them doesn’t change much.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I think this is right

Even if it’s a two-loss Alabama, they get picked up over Stanford or Boise.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

What if Boise or TCU does make the title game

Does that change anything? Or is the other (who is likely the #3 in the BCS) still the odd man out?

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

How do you figure?

Whether TCU/BSU is #2 or #3, they’re guaranteed to be in the BCS. So are the six AQs. There are still only three spots left, to be divided between Boise (suppose), Stanford, Ohio State, and Auburn (suppose).

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, the number of available slots doesn't change.

In my mind, I see passing up a #4 as a little more tenable if the #3 was already a non-AQ team and taken as an at-large (as opposed to passing up a #3 non-AQ when a #2/#1 non-AQ was guaranteed the title game).

So not so much availability, but justification.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that it should be harder

But if the TCU/Boise is already in the title game, I don’t think the Rose is obligated to take a non-AQ (they otherwise would be). Which means they’ll grab Stanford. Then you have two spots for Auburn/Alabama, Ohio State, and Boise/TCU. I just don’t see that ending well for TCU/Boise.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

The Rose is only obligated if the non-AQ team is an automatic qualifier.

And only 1 non-AQ can be declared an automatic qualifier in a year. So you’re right on that.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure a #3 team can get passed up for an at-large.

I’d have to check the rules, but the top 4 have some special consideration, IIRC.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I knew that

But I wasn’t sure exactly what sort of special consideration it is. I know that #4 can be passed over as an at-large, but only if #3 is also an at-large.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Just looked it up,

and the special consideration is only for teams from AQ conferences.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

The best part of watching Boise? Fundamentals.

They don’t get the high-star athletes other teams do, but their players, to a man, play with excellent fundamentals.

Don't look now

But it’s 3-3 in the Oregon/Washington game with 8:30 left in the 2nd.

I was in a rush

So I picked straight against the spread — ie, higher spread = higher points.

Hey, all

Nice drive there, by Miles, except for the open-fingers clap, which makes me feel weird.

I’ve been half paying attention — did ESPN really have Gameday at a venue and then not show that game. I wonder how long it’s been since they’ve done that, now that they, like AT&T, own 97% of all the world and 97% of everything that matters.

by Joel Hollingsworth on Nov 6, 2010 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Four weeks ago

Gameday was in Columbia, but CBS had the rights to the Cocks against Alabama.

They also did this last year in Fort Worth for the TCU/Utah game.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Hm.

/said in that “learn something new every day” tone of voice.

Just struck me funny this afternoon b/c I had Gameday on in the background and then went straight to ESPN looking for the game and thought it was odd that it was on that channel that is real effort to find. You know, the one also showing Tennessee-Memphis. CBS CS is bookending today, huh?

North Carolina with a special teams disaster

Getting ready to punt from their 40, the snap went over the head, and the punter kicked it out of bounds from the 3. Apparently, in college, that is not an automatic safety, but rather half the distance from the spot of the illegal touch. FSU got 1st and goal at the 1 and promptly scored. They now lead 35-34.

by VolnVA on Nov 6, 2010 6:41 PM EDT reply actions

So on my way to get some more snacks . . .

. . . “luck” is not really the word. But what is?

Oh, good grief.

There’s seriously a possibility of an Auburn-LSU NC Game. Very slim, obviously, but you can see the dominoes.

by David Hooper on Nov 6, 2010 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

This result would be better for Boise regarding the championship game

But even worse regarding making a BCS bowl in general. A two-loss Alabama team probably would’ve been picked over an undefeated Boise, but a one loss LSU will certainly be picked first. But I highly doubt they jump them in the BCS standings.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 6, 2010 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

We really help Boise there, if Auburn loses

because national perception is that LSU “lost” to us

which is the best point about running it at UT too

works really well when you can still get pressure with your NFL d-linemen…though Chief is blitzing some out of it

After the TD, I think there’s enough time to kick it deep.
