Lady Vols Exhibition vs. Union
I'm watching the Lady Vols in their second exhbition game with two purposes: to see the lineups that Summitt tests out, and to see how Lauren Avant handles the point. Since it's just exhibition, I'll keep this over in the 'Posts rather than a front page article, but if you have any questions or comments during the game, feel free to add to it.

For quite a bit of the early goings,
they used Manning, Spani, Stricklen, Johnson, and Bjorklund. Stricklen was the point and Johnson the center-ish.
When in doubt, get it to Cain.
Gotta say, though, I like Simmons’ energy. She’s diving in for rebounds with the rest of ’em.
21-18 LV lead.
They keep missing threes. Now 24-18, finally made one. But they have to develop their interior game more than this.
OOBTO!
LVs forced a turnover and got a couple fast break points, then Spani stonewalled the inbounder.
32-18 LVs and yet another turnover
During that previous timeout, Summitt’s foot evidently found its mark as the gals are playing much better, especially on defense.
These are all here for me to drool over, right?
I like this one a lot, although I don’t think it’s even close to a top-10 option for this year.

This one can work later in the year.
If you didn’t see the game, though, it’s worth a peek. The Lady Vols site still has the video up, and you’ll like watching Baugh play.
If it's up tomorrow, perhaps.
I tend to not read too much into exhibition games as a general rule; I’d much rather watch the regular season action. But I am excited to see Simmons and Baugh in action.

They played hard in the game.
Granted, it was Avant’s first ever and Simmons’s second ever, but good to see the effort. A nice change from the previous couple years.
39-21 at the half.
Much better than the 21-18 gap. Still raw.
But we’re going to love having Baugh back, if the early going is any indication.
Well, so much for that.
The player quit working at halftime, so I’m stuck without any view of the game.
67-43 right now.
Tennessee’s failing is their 27% 3-PT shooting (6-22). They’ll need to be ready for cold three-point nights and have a better interior attack.
Avant and Simmons are working well together.
A nice turnover (Avant) / fast break layup (Simmons), then a double-team (Avant/Bjorklund, I think) on the inbound forces a timeout by Union.
Avant and Simmons are fearless.
They’re spending a lot of time in the interior on both offense and defense, and they’re doing well.
Simmons is awesome on the fast break.
86-53 Final.
The biggest reason for the ‘close’ score was three-pointers. UT was 7-25 and Union was 9-19.
Upsides:
Cain = Beast. But you knew that.
Baugh = Beast. Cain is no longer alone.
Simmons = Beast. Gal can play.
Avant = on her way. I didn’t get to see a whole lot of her, but she’s very decisive and plays with commitment.
Johnson had more energy than usual. I think she may feed off Avant and Simmons.
Downsides:
Bass = 12 minutes, 1 shot attempt, 0 makes, 1 assist. Otherwise silent on the floor.
Bjorklund 1-7 from three.
Williams = serving her one-game suspension. But she faces a stiff challenge from Simmons for playing time.
Thanks for these comments, Hoop!

I will give my North Carolina for Tennessee Today. Apparently.

It was mostly to give me an outlet to write down observations. I think I’m beginning to see some lineup combinations, especially now that Baugh is available (and ‘armed and fully operational’).
Ponderings on lineups, starting on the interior.
One thing that appears likely to me is that Cain and Baugh will be on opposite shifts. Baugh handled the interior beautifully, appearing quick and confident in her actions. It’s going to be great having her back.
The big question is how Johnson and Brewer split. I’m totally guessing, but I’d lean toward Johnson playing with Cain and Brewer with Baugh. Cain’s still more of a beast in the interior, so Johnson’s outside game could be more effective as a compliment. Brewer should be a nice compliment to Baugh as a two-post or a post-center combo.
After that, you’ll probably see Manning and Stricklen split often, but I can’t make an argument for them either way. It’ll depend mostly on the point guard rotation, which Stricklen will often be a part of.
The starting lineup is likely Cain-Johnson-Spani-Stricklen-Bjorklund, just like old times. When Avant/Bass runs the point, you’ll probably see Manning as the compliment. You may also see a lot of Avant-Simmons lineups, especially against smaller teams. It’s really early to tell much about those two, but I did like the way they played.
There’s still question about Spani, albeit a very good one. She looked so sharp in exhibition that she’s bound to be playing a lot of minutes. It’ll be interesting to see where she fits into the lineup. She may end up being the most reliable player on the team, even though nothing she does draws attention to herself.
…man, this looks like it’ll be a fun year.
The big question for me is when Simmons cracks the 15-minute PT barrier.
If she plays even kind of like this come the regular season, that’s great news. Sorely needed, too.
I like your thoughts on the Johnson/Cain and Brewer/Baugh split, but we’ll see some Three Towers action as well.
I ….don’t think Bass is going to be in the rotation much. Shame for her, but I don’t think she fits well this season except as a breather.
The big news for me is that the Ladies have a legitimate three-guard lineup (Stricklen / Bjorklund / Simmons) now, which I wasn’t counting on this early in the season.

Agreed.
Bass is going to be relegated to Smallbone level work. Shame, like you said, but I think the Bobbitt 2.0 experiment was doomed from the start.
I think she's fighting for the same pool of minutes Avant is.
And I think Avant will get them. I have no clue where Kamiko fits into any of this, though.

She has an intermediate home in a smaller lineup.
Maybe she’d fit in with that guard-heavy lineup I was talking about earlier. But she won’t win minutes from Bjorklund, and she may from Simmons but I’m not even sold on that.
As for the forwards …good luck with that, Kamiko. Although she’ll have all the motivation in the world if she starts dropping PT to a true freshman.

Your Three Towers idea
would completely and utterly shut down the interior. If we’re playing against a poor three-point team, that would be absolutely lethal.
I almost like Stricklen / Simmons / Brewer / Baugh / Cain more.
With that being said, the only reason Simmons is in is for defensive effort; I don’t think of Bjorklund as a high-quality defender, but that’s because she’s so deadly on offense.

Yeah, Simmons is quicker on defense.
Given the forest you’ve set up otherwise, you’ll need somebody who can keep up with the other team’s smallest player.
Yup.
No way does that work against the teams that aren’t afraid to bomb away – it’s the teams that think they can play big that would get swept under. (Why hello, Baylor. Nice to see you again.)

They still have that one guard who could shoot from downtown?
She gave us more problems than Griner.
I'm hoping Simmons can handle her.
No pressure or anything.

Took me a second. At first, I thought 'her' meant Griner.
Simmons guarding Griner would be pressure, no? ;-)
But we’ll see. I want to see Simmons against better competition. I really like her motor, though.
Upside: Baylor isn't a 3-point team.
They shoot ~half the number of their opponents, and make them at about 27%. Clearly the key is to stop the pass into Griner.
For those looking ahead to the Baylor game:
Their starting point guard, Kelli Griffin, has left the team.
