Champs Sports And Insight Bowl Game Thread
Pop bowl game thread! Woo!
It's that weird week between Christmas and New Year's where some people are still stuck in airports sleeping on nasty floors, some are nestled snug in their Christmas beds, and others are taking advantage of the weird week to get credit for working when in reality they're basically vacationing at their desks. Right.
Anyway, there are football games on tonight. On Tuesday. Starting at 6:30, which just adds to that whole weird vibe.
So whether you're in your bed, at your desk, or sniffing a sticky scrap of carpet, join us to talk about the Champs Sports Bowl featuring West Virginia and N.C. State and the Insight Bowl between Iowa and Missouri.

All of the above, if they’re stranded at the airport.

For some reason, my TV signal is coming into my computer as black and white. Kind of annoying.

Noel Devine really should be playing on Christmas.

I thought Devine got that first down.

Rebooting, hoping that gives me color. I suggest the same strategy for WV.
by Joel Hollingsworth on Dec 28, 2010 7:12 PM EST reply actions
Huh. Didn’t work, yet now it’s color. Yes, that’s right. It rebooted to black and white. But then something changed, and now we have color. Games look better on green grass.

I’ve been half paying attention, but this game appears to be a series of interviews with some football action going on in the background.

Well, I’m off to see if I can convert non-NCAA-provided stats into a UNC game preview.

Strange post-Christmas dinner sandwich of the day...
sliced honey ham, smoked provolone, pepperoni, stone ground mustard, potato salad, and 3 drops of mayo on a hoagie roll.
Surprisingly good.
That is quite odd.
And I’d hate to be the guy who has to ground that mustard with a rock.

Melatonin
A couple roommates and myself used to dabble in the melatonin back in the day. Gives you the most vivid dreams. We all independently came to this conclusion. Or kinda independently. I should go buy some more. I think I liked remembering my dreams.
...just apologize for not thanking me.
Funny
Cause my wife gives it to my daughter because it’s “safer” than medicine. I say “natural” is nothing more than marketing and the only question is whether something you ingest is good for you or not. Cocaine, excrement — both natural, but not the best things to ingest. In fact, medicine may (may!) be safer b/c it’s tested and regulated more than vitamins and supplements. We have this conversation about once a quarter and never get anywhere.
by Joel Hollingsworth on Dec 28, 2010 10:03 PM EST up reply actions
On the bright side...
…I never thought Melatonin was the slightest bit addictive. And I do feel like it served its intended purpose. The one side effect was just interesting…I always though.
...just apologize for not thanking me.
And I do agree with your argument on 'natural' vs. 'safe'
The “natural” distinction merely refers to the process that something came to be. That something could be safe or unsafe independently of au naturaleness.
...just apologize for not thanking me.

I'm not worried
I visited one of the Korean royal palaces yesterday, so I have my culture quota filled for the week.

That sounds like fun. It would fill my quota for like the whole year. I went to see A Day In The Life Of An Elf in downtown Minneapolis.
by Joel Hollingsworth on Dec 28, 2010 8:49 PM EST up reply actions
It was fun. It had just snowed, so the palace was even more picturesque than usual. Though, I felt entirely inadequate with my digital camera compared to these gianormous cameras that these old Korean men were hauling around (complete with tripods, of course).

Wow...
Bad pass that hits defender between numbers? No worries, offense, he’ll drop it!
Fumble that rolls on the ground for 5 seconds? No worries, offense, the defense doesn’t know it’s there!
Perfect pass to the WR? No worries, defense, he’ll drop it.
And then a 30 yard run has a maybe fumble at the end of it…
At my in-laws
and due to a preference for the pro game, I’m stuck with National Favreball League coverage tonight.
Well, that's a good point
I think perhaps nature did not intend for football to be played on a Tuesday night.
At least, not football of any greater quality than the MAC.
So we’re right on point.

I have to write a bunch of previews for another site.
One of them is the Outback Bowl. I basically raged on the Florida offense for a good 500 words before realizing I should come back to it later. I’ve had my fill of bad football for the day.

Methinks a TD will put this one to bed
And take my 14 confidence points with it. I really should’ve just made totally random picks, I wouldn’t be doing any worse.
I forgot to adjust my confidence points
After the first couple of games I decided to just “go with it.”

by kingofzachland on Dec 28, 2010 9:34 PM EST up reply actions
Yup.
I just don’t see it happening. I know that ESPN is talking themselves into believing it, but this is easily the biggest mismatch that Oklahoma has been handed in a bowl game in the last decade.
by David Hooper on Dec 28, 2010 9:35 PM EST up reply actions
That's my 35-pointer
So I’m apparently very confident that Oklahoma will win…though my .500 record suggests you should perhaps take that pick with a grain of salt.
I took a "high-risk" strategy for my picks
I put my “sure things” in the middle, and my riskier, upset picks at the top. I’ll either win outright or lose spectacularly. Probably the latter.
...just apologize for not thanking me.
I just checked my picks. I won't be checking them again.
My “high risk” strategy failed miserably. Miserably miserably.
...just apologize for not thanking me.
So I’ve been doing the statsy game preview of the Music City Bowl, and I was struck by how many times my search for “Carolina” brought up the Wolfpack before the Tar Heels. These guys must be pretty good.

Mine was more of a TL;RTMTBTFOPNKCOM
Too long, read too many times because the Fun Office Pools numbers kept changing on me. I changed some setting so that the numbers wouldn’t shift when I changed something, so I ended up with a bunch of duplicate values, and finding them and the open slots was wickedly complicated. I was terribly frustrated. So I blame my impending failure on that. I credit any potential success to my brilliance and perseverance.

Dooley-isms Archiving the Genius.
by kingofzachland on Dec 28, 2010 9:57 PM EST up reply actions
WVU put in place a strange "coach in waiting" system after the season ended
Fired their offensive coordinator, will be bringing in the guy from Oklahoma State to be the o-coordinator with Stewart as head coach in ’11, then the new guy will take over in ’12.
WV AD hired Dana Holgerson (sp?) as coach in waiting, sort of half-firing their current coach and causing some shake up on the staff (I’ve only been half-paying attention as well and I’m behind on the news, but it’s something like that). WV played so poorly, May said, that the AD may want to just go ahead and pull the whole plug now and make the coach-in-waiting the coach-right-now.
by Joel Hollingsworth on Dec 28, 2010 9:59 PM EST up reply actions
Ah, right.
I was already moving on past WVa. And May is probably right, to be honest. What kind of authority will Stewart really have if the players know he’s not going to be around?

But then again, it’d have been hard for me not to like it. The plot is functional, which is all I asked for. The special effects are all terrific and well-balanced. The 3-D is the most comfortable to watch that I’ve seen. It feels really natural.
