Tennessee Volunteers National Signing Day: All-Day Open Thread
Complete list of today's signees and early enrollees (as of 11:45 a.m. EST) with initial impressions up top on the front page.
It's here! Today is the first Wednesday of February, which is famously known to stalkers of 17-18 year old males as National Signing Day.
There are a lot of stories on tap for this year. Like last year, we get to see the handiwork of a brand new coaching staff. (Unlike last year, this one says 'britches'.) We're straight in the middle of football's equivalent of the nuclear arms race with schools like Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Arkansas; there are also those pesky third-world non-SEC players to consider as well.
Here's the way things are working on Rocky Top Talk.
This thread is be the all-day open discussion thread for everything pertaining to National Signing Day. We are going to provide many other posts as well; with each letter of intent that hits the UT fax machine, we'll provide a feature post for that new Vol. (WOO!) However, we kindly ask for all conversation to re-direct back to this post so that we can keep a more organic, sports-bar feel to the day that should be a lot more fun for everyone. It's no big deal if you don't, but you'll find that discussions are a lot easier to maintain this way.
Don't forget about the podcast tonight at 9 PM.
We'll discuss the day and the shape of the football program once we've had a chance to catch our breaths. Like our other podcasts, there will be a post here that you can use to access the podcast in real time (or afterwards if you wish).

8:30 am - Eddrick Loften
8:30 am - Markeith Ambles
9 am - John Probst
9:45 am - Da'Rick Rogers and Nash Nance

Here’s to tomorrow, may our day be filled with great plays that want to all be apart of a great UT tradition!

So should we kick this off now?
http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2010/feb/02/lb-crump-commits-vols/
Crump officially commits. LT apparently likes this guy, which is good enough for me. I take it this means Stanley is gone (probably didn’t have the grades anyways), leaving us with 2-5 more spots (depending on whether we oversign).
Rogers, Stone, Ambles, and Robinson would be a great finish. Like our chances with the first two. Tossup with Ambles, imo. I don’t know if Dooley will have a surprise, but if he does, I bet it’s Robinson, which is why I listed him. We’re competing against MSU and Arkansas. We have to still be in it.
by Incipient_Senescence on Feb 2, 2010 10:16 PM EST reply actions
I forgot to add to that finish:
Delvin Jones (rumored package with Williams). But he’s a sign and place anyways.
by Incipient_Senescence on Feb 2, 2010 10:19 PM EST up reply actions
Certainly could. Rumors have been going both ways with Williams anyway
I was just filling out my first five choices based on what I think we want and what I think is reasonable to hope for (i.e. no Chaz Green).

Thanks.
I’m still getting things ready for tomorrow, but I did notice that. I don’t mind this extra work. ;-)
And yes, Stanley is gone, I’m pretty sure.
Otherwise, I agree with what you say about the finish line.

rumors rumors
Crump got the offer tonight because earlier Glen Stanley informed the staff that he will be going to USC. Lance Thompson loves Crump.
Ralph WIlliams reaffirmed his commitment with the staff, but Delvin Jones is all but guaranteed to end up at Ole Miss and is trying to sway WIlliams that way too. Williams sounds like a UT lean, and hopefully it stays that way through tomorrow.
Stone will be a Vol.
If/when Rogers signs with Tennessee, Ambles is likely to go another direction. UNC is a more likely destination than USC.
Calvin Smith is likely to FSU, but Alabama is a possibility.
If so, then this shouldn't get anybody's dander up. Right? Right?
by David Hooper on Feb 2, 2010 11:46 PM EST up reply actions
If he goes to USC
I’m sure the spin doctors will accuse UTK of spreading the low grades rumor…..and he’ll accuse Urban Meyer of cheating.
UTK's playing the low grades rumor?
I thought it would be the cash and cars USC was passing him. ;)

i actually heard about the grade rumors before he was serious about UT
Da’Rick himself has dispelled them, saying that he will be fine. I trust him
Everyone is saying that Nance
is his tutor. Maybe they can continue. A lot of people are saying he won’t be playing in a year’s time due to grades. We’ll see. Let’s get him on campus first.
Just spent 45 seconds
watching Ambles on ustream. I’ll never get that time back. He’s like a train wreck. Downright silly.
I haven't seen it
but I’ve heard roughly the same thing from everyone who has. If we get Stone and Da’Rick and Ambles goes elsewhere, I’ll still be very happy

i tuned in for a little bit
the coach of whatever school he’s going to called him… he had a legit conversation with him… said there were some other coaches in the room. he wanted to give a shout out but didn’t want to give anything away. said rubio owed him $10.
I am glad someone else was watching too and seen that.
He pretty much gave away that he was going to USC while he was on the phone and didnt even realize it. As I watched his Ustream I couldnt help myself but be reminded of Travis Henry.
Rumor has it that was actually Rubio who called him
his “shout out” was after the fact when he grabbed the Tennessee hat and put it from his knee.
Just a play on Travis Henry's
dependent count. bull4real said Ambles reminded him of Travis Henry.
Trust me, you guys are better off without Ambles
He is a primadonna punk, will fit much better with his new coach. He would have just caused you guys problems, a la Kelley Washington(good skills, head case)
Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
I'm with you
Hopefully he helps bring down Runaway Lane and Co. at SC. Granted that won’t be too difficult, unless the NCAA decides to do nothing, which isn’t to hard to believe.

Good morning all
I rise at this absurdly early hour to see that we already have our top recruit inked and ready. Let’s get some more.
by Incipient_Senescence on Feb 3, 2010 8:19 AM EST reply actions
I know there are more surprising things to happen today
but Michael Palardy sticking with this new staff is still among the most important. Looks like he was even the first to get his name on the dotted line.
So is all player discussion here, as opposed to their own threads?
I do think Palardy is probably our most important recruit, although his two blocked FGs in the AA game kinda nag at me a bit. Now the lines were absolutely terrible (the other kicker, who signed with Bammer, also had one blocked, although he hit it hard enough that it went in anyways), but it’s still a little disturbing. That said, he looks vastly superior to anything we have. I guess we just have to put a line in front of him (how we do that, I don’t know).
by Incipient_Senescence on Feb 3, 2010 8:27 AM EST reply actions
I vote for keeping it here
I don’t have to click back and forth.
Just like a game thread.
And I watched the Army All Star game, and his blockers weren’t even trying, so I really have no worries based on that performance.

But why would anyone who watched any LSU football last year think that they are well coached? In any way, shape or form?

So DT is all of a sudden our biggest need in next year's class
And we also need John Brown to qualify and Arthur Jeffrey (mystery #1 from last year’s class) to pan out.

they are still rumors
but the rumors have spread. sports animal repeating them, but nothing substantial. oh this would not be good! garza didn’t help. and then getting rogers didn’t help. i bet he is less cetain than when he committed, but certaily he is still a Vol lean!
He'd be close to home.
Would be the #1 guy for sure.
Haven't been following recruiting until now (work sometimes gets in the way)
But I’m excited about Rogers, it’s nice to land the #9 commit in such a short time.
This is a great piece of Wilcox
Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman says that if Boise State were to lose defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox to Tennessee, the impact would be felt on the recruiting trail as much as on the field. Wilcox is one of the Broncos’ top recruiters, having landed QB Kellen Moore and WR Kirby Moore, and that role might be more difficult to replace than his role as DC.

he might be a great evaluator
boise state doesn’t typically bring in highly touted recruits, but they are good at getting the right players and developing them.
I think it's all relative really
I mean, he probably didn’t have a chance against the big school’s and their recruiting power. Thus he really must have done his homework, which I can appreciate.
