Tennessee Volunteers National Signing Day: All-Day Open Thread

Complete list of today's signees and early enrollees (as of 11:45 a.m. EST) with initial impressions up top on the front page.

It's here!  Today is the first Wednesday of February, which is famously known to stalkers of 17-18 year old males as National Signing Day.

There are a lot of stories on tap for this year.  Like last year, we get to see the handiwork of a brand new coaching staff.  (Unlike last year, this one says 'britches'.)  We're straight in the middle of football's equivalent of the nuclear arms race with schools like Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Arkansas; there are also those pesky third-world non-SEC players to consider as well.

Here's the way things are working on Rocky Top Talk.

This thread is be the all-day open discussion thread for everything pertaining to National Signing Day.  We are going to provide many other posts as well; with each letter of intent that hits the UT fax machine, we'll provide a feature post for that new Vol.  (WOO!)  However, we kindly ask for all conversation to re-direct back to this post so that we can keep a more organic, sports-bar feel to the day that should be a lot more fun for everyone.  It's no big deal if you don't, but you'll find that discussions are a lot easier to maintain this way.

Don't forget about the podcast tonight at 9 PM.

We'll discuss the day and the shape of the football program once we've had a chance to catch our breaths.  Like our other podcasts, there will be a post here that you can use to access the podcast in real time (or afterwards if you wish).

[Note by Joel, 02/03/10 6:40 AM EST ] Scheduled announcements, courtesy of GVX's Dave Hooker:

8:30 am - Eddrick Loften

8:30 am - Markeith Ambles

9 am - John Probst

9:45 am - Da'Rick Rogers and Nash Nance

10:30 am - Mychal Rivera

Thanks to everyone at RTT

Without you guys, I wouldn’t be so up to date, out here in California.
Here’s to tomorrow, may our day be filled with great plays that want to all be apart of a great UT tradition!

So should we kick this off now?

http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2010/feb/02/lb-crump-commits-vols/

Crump officially commits. LT apparently likes this guy, which is good enough for me. I take it this means Stanley is gone (probably didn’t have the grades anyways), leaving us with 2-5 more spots (depending on whether we oversign).

Rogers, Stone, Ambles, and Robinson would be a great finish. Like our chances with the first two. Tossup with Ambles, imo. I don’t know if Dooley will have a surprise, but if he does, I bet it’s Robinson, which is why I listed him. We’re competing against MSU and Arkansas. We have to still be in it.

by Incipient_Senescence on Feb 2, 2010 10:16 PM EST reply actions

Thanks.

I’m still getting things ready for tomorrow, but I did notice that. I don’t mind this extra work. ;-)

And yes, Stanley is gone, I’m pretty sure.

Otherwise, I agree with what you say about the finish line.

I'm not bringing my computer to class

I need a letter of rec for PhD programs from this guy. Hopefully, all of our big news happens before I leave at 1:30.

But I can imagine for those with more normal schedules, work may be more or less not happening.

by Incipient_Senescence on Feb 2, 2010 11:17 PM EST up reply actions

rumors rumors

Crump got the offer tonight because earlier Glen Stanley informed the staff that he will be going to USC. Lance Thompson loves Crump.

Ralph WIlliams reaffirmed his commitment with the staff, but Delvin Jones is all but guaranteed to end up at Ole Miss and is trying to sway WIlliams that way too. Williams sounds like a UT lean, and hopefully it stays that way through tomorrow.

Stone will be a Vol.

If/when Rogers signs with Tennessee, Ambles is likely to go another direction. UNC is a more likely destination than USC.

Calvin Smith is likely to FSU, but Alabama is a possibility.

by golfballs03 on Feb 2, 2010 11:25 PM EST reply actions

If he goes to USC

I’m sure the spin doctors will accuse UTK of spreading the low grades rumor…..and he’ll accuse Urban Meyer of cheating.

by ChattVol on Feb 3, 2010 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

UTK's playing the low grades rumor?

I thought it would be the cash and cars USC was passing him. ;)

Da’Rick himself has dispelled them, saying that he will be fine. I trust him

by golfballs03 on Feb 3, 2010 7:59 AM EST up reply actions

Everyone is saying that Nance

is his tutor. Maybe they can continue. A lot of people are saying he won’t be playing in a year’s time due to grades. We’ll see. Let’s get him on campus first.

I haven't seen it

Dawg fans are claiming academics already.

Given the rumors of missed classes, they might be onto something. But I found that funny, give our own discussion about that move regarding Stanley.

There’s a song in there somewhere…

by David Hooper on Feb 3, 2010 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

i tuned in for a little bit

the coach of whatever school he’s going to called him… he had a legit conversation with him… said there were some other coaches in the room. he wanted to give a shout out but didn’t want to give anything away. said rubio owed him $10.

by golfballs03 on Feb 3, 2010 12:52 AM EST up reply actions

I am glad someone else was watching too and seen that.

He pretty much gave away that he was going to USC while he was on the phone and didnt even realize it. As I watched his Ustream I couldnt help myself but be reminded of Travis Henry.

by bull4real on Feb 3, 2010 1:10 AM EST up reply actions

Rumor has it that was actually Rubio who called him

his “shout out” was after the fact when he grabbed the Tennessee hat and put it from his knee.

by golfballs03 on Feb 3, 2010 8:01 AM EST up reply actions

Trust me, you guys are better off without Ambles

He is a primadonna punk, will fit much better with his new coach. He would have just caused you guys problems, a la Kelley Washington(good skills, head case)

Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs

by bamachine on Feb 3, 2010 9:32 AM EST up reply actions

I'm with you

Hopefully he helps bring down Runaway Lane and Co. at SC. Granted that won’t be too difficult, unless the NCAA decides to do nothing, which isn’t to hard to believe.

by gramsey712 on Feb 3, 2010 8:24 AM EST reply actions

So is all player discussion here, as opposed to their own threads?

I do think Palardy is probably our most important recruit, although his two blocked FGs in the AA game kinda nag at me a bit. Now the lines were absolutely terrible (the other kicker, who signed with Bammer, also had one blocked, although he hit it hard enough that it went in anyways), but it’s still a little disturbing. That said, he looks vastly superior to anything we have. I guess we just have to put a line in front of him (how we do that, I don’t know).

by Incipient_Senescence on Feb 3, 2010 8:27 AM EST reply actions

I vote for keeping it here

I don’t have to click back and forth.

Just like a game thread.

And I watched the Army All Star game, and his blockers weren’t even trying, so I really have no worries based on that performance.

I wonder who is left out there that we can fill the rest of our spots with. Is there a fallback or too, heck maybe DD has something up his sleeve.

This is a great piece of Wilcox
Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman says that if Boise State were to lose defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox to Tennessee, the impact would be felt on the recruiting trail as much as on the field. Wilcox is one of the Broncos’ top recruiters, having landed QB Kellen Moore and WR Kirby Moore, and that role might be more difficult to replace than his role as DC.
