SEC Basketball Power Poll - February 28

Hoopspowerpoll2009logoa_medium

As we enter the final week of the regular season, the major battles are for third place in the SEC East and second place (and a first round bye) in the SEC West.  Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee are all NCAA Tournament locks.  Florida looked good after beating the Vols on Tuesday, but lost at Georgia yesterday and play both Vandy and Kentucky this week...so we'll see.  Mississippi State is also right on the bubble, and Ole Miss would still be in the conversation if they can finish at 9-7.  Meanwhile, five other teams find themselves on the NIT bubble with records within a game of .500...and hey, even LSU got a win this week, so good times all around.  Our ballot for this week:

1. Kentucky Wildcats (27-2, 12-2)

2. Vanderbilt Commodores (22-6, 11-3)

3. Tennessee Volunteers (21-7, 9-5)

4. Florida Gators (20-9, 9-5)

5. Mississippi St. Bulldogs (21-8, 9-5)

6. Mississippi Rebels (19-9, 7-7)

7. Arkansas Razorbacks (14-15, 7-7)

8. South Carolina Gamecocks (14-14, 5-9)

9. Auburn Tigers (14-15, 5-9)

10. Georgia Bulldogs (13-14, 5-9)

11. Alabama Crimson Tide (14-14, 4-10)

12. LSU Tigers (10-18, 1-13)

I feel like you have Georgia a bit low

I know they don’t have any road wins, but in their last five, they’re 3-2 with good wins over Carolina and Florida and single-digit road losses to UT and Vandy. Couple that with their good non-conference wins, and I might be tempted to put them above USC.

Only reason

is that Auburn obliterated them by 19 points two weeks ago, and I feel like I can’t put Georgia ahead of Auburn. They’ve both been much more impressive than Carolina coming down the stretch though.

Arkansas peaked in the middle of SEC play and has a decent conference record

but their last 3 games have been double digit losses including 2 to LSU and Auburn. I think that is closer to who this team is – among the bottom 3 in the SEC.

I also think Georgia is better than #10. But when you go off head-to-head matchups these are the kind of results you get
