I like Dooley's conversations with the camera crew before things start
That’s not a bomb is it? We should bring in the dog-sniffers to make sure there are no bombs or scary devices.

Aaron Douglas will miss a few practices for personal issues
Not expected to be long-term.
Will Brimfield has left the team. Fantastic. An O-lineman, of all people.

I was just typing up on that.
But that’s exactly my feeling.

Art Evans, Nick Reveiz, Savion Frazier all out for spring
all expected with surgery recovery. Aaron Douglas continues to have “personal issues” that will cause him to miss some practice. William Brimfield is no longer with the team, mutual decision to part ways
Open competition for playing time
But people who proved themselves for twelve games last year won’t be forgotten.

How concerned are you about long-term depth issues
“Long term I’m not. But we do have some short-term concerns that really can’t be fixed. It’ll only be fixed in time.”
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2010 12:43 PM EDT reply actions
I'd agree with the short-term assessment.
And we’re powerless to assess the long-term, so no reason to bother there.

With the depth concerns, how physical will spring practice be?
It’s going to be physical. It’s not good practice to alter good practice for fear of injury. If you do that, you’ll be healthy but soft.
There will be a lot of hitting but not taking people to the ground, just wrapping them up on your feet. That actually helps tackling.

I would agree with his stance on media appearances.
I hate it when guys call pressers to announce that nothing’s happening.
But boy, can I smile pretty!
Sounds like Dooley wants the deal Bruce Pearl has
talk to the media plenty during the season (and spring practice), but otherwise silent
Good players are resilient
They’ll work their tails off no matter who is the coach. Of course, recruiting and attrition has been affected by the coaching changes, but the guys who are there will be fine. However, ask the players. I don’t ask the players every day if I did alright.

Awesome:
Letterman: Hey, I’m coming to practice.
UT: Ok.
That has been driving me crazy in the local media this week.
He wants to know in advance if former players are coming
Is that unreasonable? He doesn’t know a lot of them, and he wants to know they’ll be there so he can meet them. The former players are concerned because they’re hearing rumors, but all they have to do is call ahead and say they’re coming over.

Nothing's changed (regarding open door policy)
Where are y’all media types hearing all of these rumors.
My brother doesn’t just drive up from Atl and walk in the door. He says “Hey, Derek, I’m coming to Knoxville.” Okay, boom!

I love his reaction to all that
Why does Hooker keep trying to make it a big deal?
He doesn’t know every single guy who has played for UT. Just call so he can meet you!

Fire Jeff Fisher.
Hooker's been railing on this all week.
He’s staked a lot on this position and he’s watching it melt under his feet.

We need a t-shirt that says
Okay. See ya. Boom. (hand motion optional)

"I'm not a take the coaches on a canoe trip guy
I see those guys enough, I want to see my family when I’m not coaching"

Why did you choose Wilcox
Uh, because he’s awesome?
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2010 12:56 PM EDT reply actions
No kidding.
It’s like we’re talking to an empty room.
by David Hooper on Mar 17, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
No former dismissed players (like BWarren) have approached him wanting to come back to the team
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2010 12:58 PM EDT reply actions
I wouldn't expect them to.
It’s hard enough for the remaining guys to handle 2 coaching staff changes in a row, much less a guy that’s been ejected before.

How are former players being treated?
And don’t tell me you have fallen for Hooker’s garbage.

That QB question is probably a better one for Chaney
but looks like accuracy is what both of them would’ve answered, in terms of what’s most important
What are the top qualities you want in a QB
Accuracy
Judgement
Having a good affect on the rest of the offense. Do they believe in you?
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2010 1:00 PM EDT reply actions
Sometimes you can put in a stinky QB
And all of a sudden the RB will break three tackles and the WR will jump up one-handed and eat peanuts off the head of the corner, and it’s the human intangible. Moxie.

He's right about big plays
we had a ton of those 10+ play drives that ended up with no points pre-Georgia
What are your offensive and D philosophies?
I believe in scoring a lot of points and not letting the other team score
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2010 1:04 PM EDT reply actions
Beyond that. . .
You need to be able to run the football even when the other team knows you’re going to run it. Also, you need to be able to stop the run, and you can’t have any huge weaknesses.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Like TEs more than FBs
But at the end of the day, you need to figure out what players will win you the football game. That will dictate whether you throw, run, whatever.

moving from fullbacks to 2 tight ends
also from the saban school of thought…wonder what Kevin Cooper thinks about that
Gotta be able to play 4 down, 3 down
Play zone, play man, have junk blitzes, do everything.

Wes Rucker:
wesrucker Dooley goes on the attack with questions he doesn’t like. I love this. Bring it, Doolander.
Bryce has never come and talked about transferring
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2010 1:09 PM EDT reply actions
It's not in his interest to do so.
You risk a lot more by transferring than by staying, as a general rule.

Me too.
Win or lose, I do agree with his viewpoint on a lot of things like media relations and basic human courtesy, or human interaction – whatever he called it.
by David Hooper on Mar 17, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions
And I like his sense of humor too
And the way he attacks media folks who ask stupid questions. We’ve had a high character guy before (Fulmer), and Dooley is certainly that, but he’s that+. Now if only he’s this good at coaching.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions
With Dooley, you know where he stands by what he says.
With Kiffin, you knew what he’d say ahead of time because it was a script.
With Fulmer, you knew where he stood by what he never said.
