Temple-Cornell is like our game last night
it’s unfair that these two teams have to play in the first round, while somebody gets to win between Texas and Wake
i saw cornell
put a 36 point whooping on a 3rd place harvard team in january. it could have been 50 if cornell had wanted it too. they are for real.

Forgive me, I'm new here
But can someone please explain to me why the lead story at KNS today is Bryce Brown?
Football is king
what was on the front page of the sports section, do you know? The basketball game may have ended too late for them to have their usual coverage.
by Will Shelton on Mar 19, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Looking at KNS online,
They don’t even have last night’s game up on their sports page (http://www.knoxnews.com/news/sports/ – look under ‘basketball’), so I’d guess that you’re right. Today is a case where the limitations of print media are dictating their coverage to a degree.
That, and with spring practice just starting up, it’s the first bit of football news we’ve had in a while. Football sells papers, and they have to go with that.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions
But how hard would it be to put the wire story as the first photo when the page loads?
by goodnight_vol on Mar 19, 2010 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Online? Not hard.
That I can’t answer to. The basketball game is the second image in their slideshow, but that’s all I got on that.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I love Tennessee football
But the off-season departure of a backup contributor to a mediocre team is not bigger than an NCAA tourney win!
by goodnight_vol on Mar 19, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I'd agree.
I noticed that the Brown story is also atop the ‘most viewed’ list on GVX, so maybe that has something to do with it as well. Again, I’m totally speculating; it could simply be that they didn’t think about things like that.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Mmm, don't know, I was looking at GVX but I'll go out and get the paper
I do remember a few years ago trying to find basketball Vols vs. Texas on the radio, only to find they were instead playing a depressive post-football-loss press conference with Fulmer. It’s ridiculous.
Cornell providing the requisite 5-12 excitement.
Up 8 at the half. Minny’s tie game is also remarkable, considering that the players undoubtedly heard Dodd’s rumors.
so what i have learned so far this march
the “last teams in” at large bids need to start being ranked in the 12-14 range and give the 9-7 seeds to conference champs.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Might not be a bad idea.

The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Announcers talking about Cornell as a possible at-large team had they not won their tourney.
A question: if they had lost their conference in a very close game and gotten an at-large bid, would they have been ranked higher than 12? Did winning the tourney allow the selection committee to cubby-hole them into a traditional small-conference slot?
lmao
the ivy league doesn’t have a tournament. conference play IS the tournament.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Ah.
See how much attention I pay to them? The point still stands.

see how much attention
the announcers pay? the ivy league just loves to be different. our scholars don’t have time for this post season nonsense. same reason they don’t send any team to the 1AA tourney in football.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
god forbid
they give students something to be excited about outside of a library. harvard has regularly finished the season in the top 25, even as high as #3, yet never gets a shot to prove it in the tourney.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Huh. In that Intel geek/clueless guy commercial (the one that begins with Space Invaders)
in every scene, there’s a girl walking in the background from right to left. It’s not the same girl, but they themed that very tightly.
Interesting story about Cornell getting a head start on pregame warmup by simulating drills without a basketball.
They’ll be the ones writing the federal budget in a few years. Just you watch.
Maybe we overstate our underdogginess
I really see no reason why we wouldn’t go for the throat in this game.

Also of some interest
though I’m not sure this will make one bit of difference on the second Saturday of September, but Mike Bellotti has resigned as Oregon’s AD and will join ESPN. Those guys haven’t been bored this offseason.
If anybody ever needs a definition of a death spiral, Oregon's athletic department may be your answer.
Their only good news at the moment is that Tennessee has absolutely zero continuity from year to year.

Other than UC-Santa Barbara, do we have any rooting interests tonight?
(And yes, I know that UCSB is a long shot.)
Games of interest, at least
Oklahoma State-Georgia Tech, especially if you like the Gauchos
by Will Shelton on Mar 19, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions
So who do we want?
And, so far as I understand, going for UCSB is simply to clear the road a bit in the S16 matchup.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Georgia Tech might be the most underachieving team in the nation
Favors is an NBA lottery pick – they’re the talent that doesn’t know how to play together team. Oklahoma State would be revenge from last year, though most of those guys are gone.
If GT actually beat both OSUs, it’d mean they finally figured out how to play together…so I’m pulling for Oklahoma State

Wow

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 19, 2010 9:22 PM EDT reply actions
Looks like Georgia Tech will take this one
My bracket is getting absolutely thrashed. At least I haven’t lost any Elite Eight teams.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 19, 2010 9:31 PM EDT reply actions
Georgia Tech shoots 65% from the line this year
They shot 96% today (24/25)
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 19, 2010 9:32 PM EDT reply actions
Which means they still haven't fixed their offense.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2010 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Nope
Did they make a single FG in the last 9 minutes? I don’t think they did. But they were 13/14 from the line in that span.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 19, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions
And on that note
You have to hate a game where one team shoots 12 FTs in 7-8 minutes when the other team isn’t fouling (intentionally fouling to prolong the game, that is). Not only have we been on the wrong end of some of those, they’re just not fun.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 19, 2010 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Okie State just gave a clinic on folding in the final minute.
Wow. Just no effort on either of their final two possessions.
Yuck
neither of those teams looked any good down the stretch…Ohio State has to like what they see in front of them
Meanwhile, back in Spokane
NMSU leads Michigan State by 1.

Aside: for no apparent reason, MSU has always rubbed me the wrong way. I have absolutely no idea why.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2010 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions
On that note: does any neutral fan ever watch the 1-16 game? I can't recall ever having bothered with it.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2010 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Nope
I’ve never bothered except when ETSU has been the 16, where they’ve shown remarkably well (this year notwithstanding).
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 19, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I have MSU in my Sweet Sixteen
But I think I’m cheering for New Mexico State anyways. I don’t really like Sparty. Or any Big Ten team.

There have been some HUGE offensive rebounds late this tournament
us, GT, Wisconsin, now Michigan State. That may salt this away. Also, what’s with all the spammers?

Vermont with the lead on Syracuse!
Okay, so maybe at 3-2, excitement is not warranted.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 19, 2010 10:00 PM EDT reply actions
I can't believe the announcer just asked if you foul intentionally.
You know – when the shotclock is already turned off…
Oh my!
A lane violation gives MSU a second chance at the FT. They could still take a 3 point lead.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 19, 2010 10:01 PM EDT reply actions
should've gotten more time on that last play, shouldn't they?
maybe .6 instead of .3
by Will Shelton on Mar 19, 2010 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions
