Ohio State-Georgia Tech at 2:20 PM EST
I’m enjoying the fact that I can use “I’m going to scout our Sweet 16 opponent” in a sentence.
question for elias
has any team ever made the elite 8 while only facing double digit seeds? come on GT, make it happen!
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
I don't want to be accused of "looking ahead"
but who do we want to win the Michigan St.-Maryland match-up?

Michigan State?
I haven’t seen them this year, but I would’ve thought Izzo’s style would be something we’d want to avoid. What’s good about playing them? Or bad about Maryland?
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 21, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions
first of all, I think Maryland is a much better team than Michigan State
Michigan State plays a slower tempo, which of course, puts a very high emphasis on possessions. They are turnover prone on offense, yet don’t force a lot of turnovers on the other end. We are good at forcing turnovers, and protect the ball relatively well. MSU doesn’t have near the size they have in the past, and I think we matchup well with them
Also, Maryland has been playing better basketball down the stretch
So Sayth King Zach I

I also think Maryland is going to win
and I think neither of them will have a gimmie with Northern Iowa

I want Michigan State to wni that game so badly.
I’ll also get it here (because ….freaking local Terp fans).

Northen Iowa would be better against MSU too
Maryland can win running up and down the court, and they can win playing half-court sets. That was a huge reason N Iowa won yesterday… they slowed down the pace which suits their game. Held Kansas below 70 points – same thing we did to beat them.
happened three times
2000: (3) Oklahoma State beat a 14, 11, and 10 before losing in the Elite 8
2001: (3) Maryland beat a 14, 11, 10 and then a 1 to make the Final Four
2005: (6) Wisconsin beat an 11, 14, and 10 before losing in the Elite 8
(thanks, wikipedia)

Is that the only sequence that doesn't include a 16 or a 15?
I think so, but I’m not 100%.
by David Hooper on Mar 21, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes
If you start with 12/13, your only possible double-digit opponent in the Sweet Sixteen is a 15. I’m a little surprised that no 2 seeds have gone 15, 10, 11. West Virginia actually has a chance to do that this year. All they need to do is beat Missou and Washington.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 21, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions
So CBS just listed the biggest upsets of the first and second round
Ohio was not included. Seriously?

Or does that just apply to the football team?

But all things being equal, I’d rather play the team with the worse record.

yeah
I don’t think GT is a better team. But a lot has to do with matchups, as this tournament has proved
By the way, most Sweet Sixteens in the last four years:
T1. Kansas (3)
T1. Memphis (3)
T1. North Carolina (3)
T1. Tennessee (3)
Xavier, Michigan State, and Pittsburgh could each enter a tie for first with a win today.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 21, 2010 2:24 PM EDT reply actions
That's what I thought
We’re in pretty elite company. Those other three have been to title games in that span. And I was a little surprised that no one was ahead of us, but I guess UNC, Memphis, and Kansas all choked this year, and Michigan State had a down year two or three years ago.

Chism is the only real contributor still around from the '07 Sweet 16 game
but Prince and BWill also saw Ohio State in the ’08 Knoxville game we won 74-69…in which the freshman version of Evan Turner had a 21-10 in 37 minutes. Lighty also started in that game
this is what bugs me when Pearl says he wants to schedule one more marquee opponent
that ‘08 team played vs. Temple, West Virginia & Texas in a tournament, Western Kentucky in Nashville, Xavier in Cincinnati, Gonzaga in Seattle, vs Ohio State, and at #1 Memphis. We were 28-3 at the end of the regular season against that schedule, highest RPI of the decade and #1 SOS…and still didn’t get a one seed. I mean, you can’t do it any better than that, and we still didn’t get rewarded.
by Will Shelton on Mar 21, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Great point.
Our SOS was really hurt by a weaker-than-average Memphis this year too. We still had a higher RPI than the 4 and 5 seeds in our region, and weren’t rewarded.

And I think they’re just describing Tennessee’s team.
Should they lose, I don’t know a lot about GT. Would they be another San Diego State?
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 21, 2010 2:36 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah
That makes things tough. So GT has good guard play and good size. But somehow they’re a 10 seed, so I guess maybe they’re not as good as the sum of their parts. Still, a Vandy-type matchup is not exciting.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 21, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions
their gaurd play is better than SDSU.
but they are inconsistent. my worry is that they are starting to peak… they started playing well in the ACC tournament
...which you'd expect at the Sweet 16.

definite talent upgrade
On Chad Ford’s NBA Draft Board, Favors is 3rd (behind Wall and Turner), Lawal is 43rd, Shumpert is 68th
Scotty Hopson checks in at 98.

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 21, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions
So, with talent, size, and good guards
Are they more like a lesser Vandy or a lesser Kentucky? And why do we match up so well with UK and so poorly with VU?
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 21, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions
However
3 of their 6 losses came when they were missing Turner. He is a HUGE part of their gameplan.
So Sayth King Zach I
by kingofzachland on Mar 21, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Favors is an 18 year old with massive upside in the future
Turner is the complete package right now (for a college player) – that’s the tradeoff
Tech is a team that went 7-9 in the ACC but lost a bunch of close games…if they have, in fact, put it all together, I wouldn’t want to play them. Which is the catch 22 bit, because while I would’ve rather played them out of that group at the start of the tournament, if they win today it would suggest that they have, in fact, put it all together.
by Will Shelton on Mar 21, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Women's: UConn beat Southern 95-39
The fouls evened up to 18-9 (UConn with fewer). At halftime, it was 15-5.
Also, shooting 23% against UConn will not get it done.
Michigan State, btw, with an early 17-7 lead
Make that 17-10.

Who would Chism matchup with against Ohio State??
Technically their 4 is Lighty, who is really a guard
could be another "Bruce does weird things in March" game
play Prince at the 4 and Chism at the 5, we’ve got a week to work on it
by Will Shelton on Mar 21, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions
thats what i was thinking
that would be preferable to playing a zone, but we could see a combination of all of that
when we tried Prince at the 4 before
and I don’t remember what game it was, but Pearl said something to the effect of “didn’t like it, and I knew I wasn’t going to like it, I got talked into it by one of the assistants”

what if
Prince played the 4 on offense…but guarded Turner and Hopson guarded Lighty?
by Will Shelton on Mar 21, 2010 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I would rather Hopson gaurd Diebler
that way Hopson won’t ever get beat off the dribble because Diebler can’t drive the ball. And Hopson has the length to prevent Diebler from lighting it up from 3
It could just be a game where we see a lot of Steven Pearl
He can guard folks on the outside. However, I do think Chism is fairly quick for a big man. They have to have some guard that he can actually guard. Diebler? If he can’t drive. . .

it’s the fact that it seems like they’re always either competing for a final four spot, playing in a BCS Bowl game, or playing in the NC game. Win or lose, their fans have had so, so, SO much to enjoy this decade that other fan bases would be happy to take in a lifetime. as they inbounded with only 6.6 to go.

If WVA holds on
that’ll still be 7 of the 13 teams that are in so far that weren’t supposed to be there, with Duke/Cal, Pitt/Xavier, and Purdue/A&M left tonight
Question:
In style of play, how does Ohio State compare with Mississippi State? One big man who blocks lots of shots coupled with a whole bunch of good guards sounds familiar. Maybe MSU + Wall/Downey/someoneelsewho’sgood to account for the Turner factor.

Ted Valentine at the Xavier / Pitt game.
On a related story, I will take Pitt -8.5 right now.

have they said what time our game is on Friday?
I’m guessing with two fanbases the size of UT and OSU we will be the late game.
Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living."
No, they haven't
Just as long we start after 5 PM, I’ll be happy. Well, as long as we win, I’ll be happy. But the post-5 start is preferable.

Kinda fun watching a T.V. game when you have no personal investment in the outcome.
Much like The Simple Life, watching Paris Hilton help a cow with incontinence is much funnier when it’s not your own cow.

If he had called the Duke game, they would have had to pay his whistle for overtime.
Surely the whistle has union regulations against that kind of sweatshop abuse.

Looking toward Friday's games, I think UT/OSU will be one of the early ones.
They’ll put that game and the Duke game at different times, and fill out the slots with the other two. But since it’s on a Friday, I’d bet that they’d put Duke at the later time to try to get more West Coast viewers. Because everybody in the world watches Duke. They’re the Notre Dame of basketball.
And if Cal does beat Duke, they’ll certainly take a later slot for the West Coast audience.
TAMU up 14-0 in FTs attempted.
12-6 edge in fouls.

Well, hopefully we can beat Ohio State
And match up against UNI or a hamstrung Sparty. Either way, it’ll be a tough road, but a road without Kansas.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 21, 2010 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Yup.
I’m optimistic about the OSU matchup. I’m still nervous that UT will flake out at some point in this tournament, but at least they’re showing that they can play tourney-level ball. And I’m less concerned about the first game in a weekend than the second, flakeout-wise.
by David Hooper on Mar 21, 2010 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Agree on all counts
I also think that our defense seriously lessens the flakeout possibility. It’s easier to knock an offense out of rhythm than a defense.
Also, I just google-mapped the four campuses, and all four schools have a 6-9 hour drive to St. Louis. So no one should have a huge advantage or disadvantage regarding fan travel unless their fans just aren’t interested. (UNI is the closest at 6 hours, and Michigan State is the farthest at almost 9).
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 21, 2010 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions
That works.
And putting things in that perspective, I’m sure UT will be in the early game. That puts two EST time teams early and two CST teams late. Well, I think OSU is EST, at least.
by David Hooper on Mar 21, 2010 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Dude. A Cornell-Washington E8 matchup is still alive.
Longshot, obviously, but I’d love to see it.
Would that be the highest combined seeding in an E8 ever? (11 + 12 = 23)
Welcome back to the game, Purdue.
14-2 run puts them up 1, 43-42.
And in your FT imbalance update, it’s 2-0 in favor of Purdue since the start of the 2nd half.
Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

That I’m disappointed the FT disparity in the Xavier-Pitt game is getting less pronounced? Come on, Ted.

Tennessee-Ohio State Friday
6:07 tip time
Inleast we don’t have to wait until roughly 11:00 like we did last time we played the Buckeyes. I am rooting for Verne and Billy to be our announcing crew since we fared pretty well with them this weekend.
It's simple Cubs in the spring and summer, Vols in the fall and winter.
My bad on that time
it is 6:07 central, 7:07 eastern. Out of CBS top 4 announcing teams: Nantz and Kellog, Verne and Billy Raftery, Enberg and Bilas, or Gus Johnson and Len Elemore, who would everyone prefer announce our games next weekend? I would go with Verne and Billy, but I know a lot of people do not like Verne.

I like Verne well enough.
I just think he’s on the decline. But he still has a very clear, effective voice and he’s very pleasant to listen to. You just have to excuse his gaffes. But I have no problem if UT gets his team.
