Ticket purchasing advice needed....
I'm not experienced in buying tickets for events like this weekend's game in St. Louis. My preliminary plan is to first try to see if I can buy a ticket in the block of seats UT will be selling today (I think) because I would like to be with other UT fans. If I can't get one of those, I've been looking on Craigslist, Ebay, StubHub, etc.. and it looks like I will be able to get something at a reasonable price. I'm hoping for something on the lower level, and right now there are several available.
Questions:
Should I just buy a ticket for Friday night, then plan on buying a ticket there if we advance? Am I correct in assuming that there will be lots of sellers trying to quickly unload their tickets for Sunday if their team loses?
Also, will ticket prices go up or down as it gets closer to game time, or is that one of those things that can't be predicted?
Any advice you guys can give me will be much appreciated. I feel sort of intimidated!

If you buy through UT, it makes things easier
I did this for the first and second round, and this is what they did:
They only sell for both rounds together, but they give a rebate on the second round of UT is eliminated in the first. I don’t know if that’s what they’ll do here, but I would assume it is.

I just called there...
and was told they are only selling to donors today, and if there are any tickets left tomorrow, they will sell to the general public (which he said is unlikely).
Any donors out there who would like to buy me a ticket (I’ll pay you for it,of course!)???

Hmmm
I had heard that they were going on sale to the general public at noon today.

They're supposed to be on sale here already.

It didn’t seem to be working for me. (I’m not going, but I tired running through the system to see what happened.)
Oh.
It says that sales start on Monday, 6/01/09 at 10 AM CST. So it’s anybody’s guess now. Just keep trying that one if you don’t see anything different, I suppose.

Oh well....
I thought I had one nailed down on Craigslist, but didn’t work out. So I’m bidding on one on Ebay. It’s hard to find singles for sale, especially for only the first session, so I’m bidding on 1 ticket for both sessions, and I’ll not worry about not getting to use the Sunday ticket, but we are going to being playing on Sunday!

meant because we are playing on Sunday….

I really hope you're right
As far as matchups go, this may be our best chance to make the Elite Eight under Pearl so far. I’d call this game a tossup right now.

I would buy just a single game ticket
because you should be able to buy a ticket off the losers for a reasonable price. I’ve done that for a number of Sweet 16/Elite 8 games and ended up with great seats for not a lot of money (thanks Duke). Also, I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a basketball game played in a dome, but even lower level tickets can be a long way from the court. If you are going lower level, try and get tickets in the bleachers on the other side (stubhub calls them floor seats). For example, Row 30 in the bleachers could be better than Row 15 in the concourse.
Ebay and Stubhub are the best ways to go… but it’s sometimes hard to determine which way the price will go closer to the event. It depends on how many tickets in that zone remain unsold as it get’s closer to gametime.
hopefully you won’t have to worry about any of this, and can get some UT tickets when they go on sale. Good luck!
Well...I took the plunge..
and bought a ticket on StubHub. It’s a floor seat; not as close as I would have liked (139F), but got it for $150, and it is a single & just the first session. So I will be buying a ticket for Sunday after Friday’s game, cause I KNOW we will win. I will need some advice on how to do that as well; I’m just a newbie at this type of thing, as I said above.
BTW, I called the ticket office again @ UT around noon, and they told me they have already sold their allotment.

yeah
or you could try and find good seats from a losing team’s fan. the key is to get buy from them before they offload tickets to a scalper. when I was in Atlanta for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 a few years ago, I asked an older Duke couple if I could buy their tickets, and I ended up sitting for the last 2 games on the 2nd row at mid-court for face value.
So basically, if UT leads and the game is out of reach,
when the OSU fans begin to leave, follow them. That’s totally worth missing the final couple minutes of a (hopeful) blowout in order to get in on the E8 game.

yes
but even if it’s a close game, and you plan on getting tickets like this… you might want to watch the end from the concourse so you can be there when people get up and leave.
i will say though, that buying a single ticket in this fashion might be tough
I think most people would want to sell all of their tickets at once, or at least in pairs. but it never hurts to ask.
Just look for the lone guy crying against a wall.
Guaranteed he’s not sitting with anybody. ;-)

Or buy both tickets and hold one for a little while.
After the initial dumpoff, its value should rise again and you could recoup some money with it.

hold on to it to sell before the elite 8 game
it give fans of the winning school who didn’t go to the Sweet 16 a day to get down there for the Elite 8… i would think.
Would it be weird....
to hold up a piece of paper with something like “Need 1 for Sunday game” as people are leaving from the area I would like to get tickets?

Go for it.
If we’re playing in the E8, nothing is off-limits. First time ever, and all that.

I would think you'd have two shots at it since UT is in the early game.
For one, the OSU fans will probably have the largest bloc to unload. If the box office would have abandoned tickets available immediately after the game (as is my understanding, but don’t trust me on this point), you could get in on that action while the late game is in progress. (And, presumably, while the fans of the late game are watching their game.)
If that doesn’t work, then you can get in line prior to the finish of the late game and get ahead of the rush of the second wave of tickets.
But again, check with somebody who’s been there, done that. I’m just speculating from third-hand info.

it never hurts to check the ticket office
but do you think people would just give their tickets back to the ticket office?
No, but people who have that second ticket on reserve might call in and cancel.

Not everybody is that smart.
And again, I don’t know how this all works out. I’m going off speculation.

I do know that a lot of people are too timid to scalp.

Can you do mobile comments, by the way?
If so, a couple on-site messages to the live game thread would be awesome. :-)

Uh...I don't know?
I have a cell phone, but I don’t have a data plan. I can do Twitter, I know that…
