A Plea to Big Orange Nation
Chest bump to cubvol for the kick in the pants. If you can make it, wear your orange to St. Louis!
-- Joel
The last 10 days something has really upset me the more I think about it. It is the terrible fan turnout we had at the Kentucky game in Nashville. We as Tennessee fans, myself included, really let this team down, by most accounts there were between about 500-1,000 UT fans in the building compared to the roughly 17,000 UK fans. Judging by their comments I think Coach Pearl and the players were disappointed as well. I know it is convienient to just say "Oh they are a basketball school, and it just means more to them" but to me I do not think we can use this excuse anymore if we want to become a first rate basketball program. Now I am not really speaking to the members of this site, as I know everyone here is a basketball fan, but more to Tennessee fans in general. I know a couple members of this site went to Providence last weekend, and some are already going to St. Louis this week. Like I said I am not speaking to anyone specific, just to UT fans overall. We need to become a fan base that travels for basketball as well as football. I'm not saying we are going to turn into Kentucky overnight, but I think the fan base as a whole needs to support this team more in neutral court settings. This weekend in St. Louis gives us a chance to make a statement.
This past December myself and about 50,000 other Tennessee fans attended the Chick-fil-A bowl in Atlanta to watch a 7-5 football team play in a mediocre bowl game. That is one thing that makes Tennessee Football so special. Whether the Vols are playing in California, Florida, New York state, Texas, or any SEC stadium Volunteer fans will be there in full force. This weekend we need to be out in full force to support this basketball team. The good thing is that in basketball you do not need 50,000 fans to give yourself a home court advantage. Just 10,000 fans in a neutral court setting will give you a decided edge. If we are willing to give so much support to 7-5 football team, we need to give that same support to this very good basketball team. After all this team has battled through to get to the Sweet 16, they deserve a strong showing of orange in the Edward Jones Dome Friday night.
This weekend this Tennessee basketball team has the opportunity to go somewhere Tennessee has never been before. It is also a great opportunity for Tennessee fans to support this team, St. Louis is only a 5 hour drive from Nashville and only 3-4 hours from Memphis. I know personally I cannot be there Friday due to school, but I definitely will be there Sunday if we beat the Buckeyes. The last 2 times we have played in the Sweet 16 it was either at a location that was not close (San Antonio) or another fan base ate up most of the tickets (Charlotte). This time neither of those should be a problem. So all I am asking is that if you are capable to get to St. Louis on Friday or hopefully Sunday, go because this team can use all of our support. Let's help this team beat Ohio State and let's show this team how much Tennessee fans do care about basketball.

When I was in high school and undergrad, I really only went to games if my Dad found a way to get tickets. About this time last year, I decided to be a little more proactive and make a concerted effort to get to any major event that held interest and was within driving distance (I know for you folks who live in Tennessee, it’s different, but the Vols rarely get within driving distance of me anymore). I can’t afford to fly to events, but just this change has brought me to a lot of great places just in the last year. I saw two of my favorite bands in concert (Muse in Boston, The Weakerthans in Boston), a World Cup Qualifier (USA vs. Trinidad & Tobago in Nashville), two UT football games (Kentucky in Lexington, Virginia Tech in Atlanta), and three UT basketball games (Auburn in Knoxville, San Diego State in Providence, Ohio in Providence). And more international soccer may be on the horizon, as one of the USA sendoff games is in East Hartford.
The point is, sometimes cost can be prohibitive, but sometimes just setting your mind to it can yield significant improvement (in my case, I’d previously seen just four UT games ever, all football, and only two this decade). My impression is that the people here do their very best to help the team, but this needs to spread throughout the Vol Nation (no, not that VolNation). Good luck to all those who will be making the trip to St. Louis, and do your best to entice more Vols to make the trip, wear their orange, and cheer the team to victory. GO VOLS!

Orange Nation has no idea what this post is about.
There’s no way that there are events outside of Knoxville, right? All the away games are played inside of my TV.
With that being said, yes – I would go to St. Louis if the trip didn’t look like it’d cost me over $1,000 to do so. (Honestly, this year was terrible for going to basketball if you’re around DC; I think the closest set of games was Providence, followed by St. Louis – neither of which are drivable if you can’t take enough time off work.)
Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.
Want to know what's closer to Saint Louis?
Indianapolis. Just sayin’.

Draft week.
Forgive me, like the US men’s hockey team, I didn’t plan on that possibility.

On the radio....
I, unfortunately, cannot get off work or can afford the trip. My days at UT were 20 years ago and life has blessed me with a wife from UGA and three major commitments(children) that I wouldn’t trade for the world. However, we prided ourselves, back in the day, of knowing in our Big Orange Hearts that NOTHING, and I MEAN NOTHING was more special than The Vols! So I hope that you guys understand that while life has taken guys like me out of the picture and physically away from Big Orange Country and the ability to drop everything on a dime and go to St. Louis, we still believe. We are watching and we believe. We believe in Coach Pearl, J.P., and this team. We have a great team and if this ride ends Friday night, it would still be considered a great one, and one we can be proud of!!!!! Only one other SEC team is left guys-c’mon! Three out of the last four years to the Sweet 16?!? That’s history on The Hill.
Don’t ever forget that IT’S GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL!
"Everything we're going to do is going to be done with a foundation of integrity with every aspect of the program. We're going to represent Tennessee with class on and off the field." Coach Derek Dooley
Completely Agree...
Couldn’t agree more. I worry that wavering fan support (away from home, of course) could contribute to CBP eventually deciding to head elsewhere. I’m concerned about this opening in Iowa, though I’m sure much of my concern is a result of the whole Lane Kiffin fiasco.
UT doesn’t lack fan support, but fans have many reasons unrelated to basketball to be reluctant to travel (the economy is a well-worn excuse, but certainly valid, as is the fact that we also have a football season to support, etc). I could imagine Bruce heading out to a place where he wasn’t second (or third) fiddle and might have more sustained recruiting success (which, as Kentcuky has proved, makes a pretty significant impact on program success.
So what do we have here
A boat, a brick wall that it’s about to run into, some undersea mountains that it can somehow sail across (despite all appearances), some random black videogame rectangle-eyes, three stars, some dots, and a random pong paddle on the top left.
Yeah, I totally get the relation with boots, Air Jordans, and various other bits of clothing. Because hey, the people on the time-and-space-transcending sea-mountain boat have to wear something, right? Why not basketball shoes and preppy t-shirts with handbag accessories?

economy's down
give us a break…just because we are responsible with our money and spend it on things like food and shelter, doesn’t mean we are not good fans…just means that we have to pick and choose
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
I think he realizes that
All he asking is for a basketball fan following a fifth the size of the football fan following. Obviously some people can’t afford the travel or taking time off work. But for those who can afford those things (even just a couple times), this is the spot to pick. It’s never been bigger than this for UT basketball.

That's why...
I’m going this weekend. I could have paid $250 to go to the SEC semi-final against UK in Nashville, but I saved my money, hoping against hope for a chance to go to the Sweet 16. Now I get to do that. Since I have two kids I could stay with living in Louisville (less than two hours from Indy) even the Final Four would not be out of reach.
On a separate note, I got a Big Orange Newsletter from UT Athletics today, promoting
1) The Orange & White Game - Buy your tickets! Buy your tickets!
2) The Lady Vols in the Sweet 16 -
3) Vols Baseball — Buy your tickets!
4) Lady Vols Softball — Buy your tickets!
5) Rowing, tennis, etc — Come out and support!
Uh, hey UT Athletics, how about those Vols? You know, the ones in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen this Friday night? This is just stupid. If anything should make CBP mad, this should.

don't know what's up with the strike throughs there...

Yeah
That is a real gaffe, I think.

I have sent a scathing email.
I’m sure that will get them on their toes! :-)

I'm pretty sure someone on here already said
That the athletic department had already sold out of their allotment of tickets. Could be why it wasn’t mentioned?

I got the same Email and also thought it was weird
But I just assumed they’d already sold all their tickets. They still should’ve encouraged UT fans to make the trip and find tickets in other ways though.

Well....
They included a link to purchase tickets to Lady Vols game through the NCAA website. I got a tweet last night from CBP with a link to buy tickets to the men’s game through the NCAA website (same link is available on UTSports.com here: http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/2010sweet16-fans.html. I checked, and tickets are still available.
So, in this email, they’re telling us to buy tickets to the Lady Vols game through the NCAA website (in addition to promoting everyone sport), but no mention of the fact that the Vols are still playing and tickets are also available for that game. This bothers me, because I think the only reason Pearl will leave Tennessee, when he does leave, is to go somewhere that gives his program highest priority. This is the type of thing that demonstrates giving his program very low priority.

I agree
It is somewhat disturbing. The men’s program has a chance to go farther than they’ve ever been before, and nary a mention?

I think another part that he ignores
is that a lot of people are better able to travel for a Saturday football game when they have Friday night after work and Saturday to get there. This game is on a Friday, around 2 hours after most people get off of work, which will make it very difficult for people to attend.
Also, in regards to the SEC Tourney vs. Football attendance. The football games are set months (or in the case of the Chik Fil A bowl a month) in advance. The people know UT will be there, so they are not taking a risk. Fans have no idea how far UT will advance in the SEC tourney, and probably are not wanting to waste the money on hotels, tickets, travel, ect. if the team is bounced in the first round and doesn’t even get to the semis against UK. (especially with UT’s history in the SEC tourney)

I was not trying to say that
people should spend all their money going to UT sporting events, obviously there are more important things to spend money on than tickets to sporting events. I was trying to make the point that compared to how many UT fans travel to away football games and bowl games are basketball fan base does not travel nearly as well. Volfanatetsu makes a good point about the Friday night game time, but seriuously if the Tennessee football team was playing in a Sweet 16 game in a mythical college football playoff on a Friday night, I gurantee you plenty of Tennessee fans would find a way to get there.
It's simple Cubs in the spring and summer, Vols in the fall and winter.
I've got an interesting (IMO) question...
Does the length of the basketball season diminish it in regards to the football season. I mean, in football, we all know that one loss and your in trouble when it comes to winning the national championship, and two and your pretty much done. In basketball, we are use to the champion losing a few (if not more) games, and it gives it a little bit of a more, “there is always next week” feeling? Could that feeling be the cause of the lack of fans showing up for the basketball games (in comparison to football).

Some of this is the nature of basketball
Other than parents of players, how many people could/would travel to Nashville, then Providence, then St. Louis? I really think UT fans underestimated Kentucky fans at the SEC Tournament, and most weren’t proactive enough on tickets. But with the nature of college basketball postseason, you can always say “Well, if they make the next round, then I’ll go.” Even though there’s more urgency on the floor, there’s less urgency in the stands because you can always assume you can go to the next game. If we do win, I hope people who can’t get up there by Friday night will make the effort for Sunday. And overall, I hope our basketball road attendance continues to increase, because this program does deserve it.

You make a good point
but I think a big part of it is that a lot of Tennessee fans just did not “grow up” on Tennessee basketball. I know personally growing up whenever UT was playing football my family would be in front of the TV or in the stands, but basketball was not that way. It was more of a “If I have nothing else to do I will watch”, but not a habit. I think a lot of Tennessee fans are just now getting used to having a good basketball team year in and year out. It is my hope that more continued success will really convince fans to travel more, because the home attendance is already at a elite level.
It's simple Cubs in the spring and summer, Vols in the fall and winter.
I didn't really think of it like that, but that is a good point.
I can say that in most of my semi-adult life (since I was 15 or so) Bruce has been here so I have been use to being (relatively) successful. Before him Green and Buzz did pretty decent as well. I reckon if I had been older in the Houston era and the eras before him, I would probably be more apathetic towards UT basketball, but I just hope the fan base continues to support the basketball team and starts traveling better.
