Tennessee again plays a third game in a season against an opponent when they face Vanderbilt tonight. The previous two meetings were close, but won by Tennessee thanks to an interior presence that Vanderbilt's players couldn't match. As usual, Tennessee will try to dominate from the inside out, while Vanderbilt will try to outrun Tennessee's defense using a lot of screens. Vanderbilt is built very similarly to Ole MIss, so a repeat performance of Friday's game is exactly what Summitt will be looking for.
Fatigue might be an issue for Vanderbilt, who has played two very close games already (65-64 in OT vs. Arkansas and 63-61 vs. LSU). Both Rhoads and Marsh played a full 45 minutes against Arkansas, and they logged 38 and 40 minutes respectively against LSU for the regulation win. They will likely be asked to play 40 minutes for a third straight night; the simple question is whether they have that energy left in them - especially against a Tennessee squad that was able to rotate their bench in throughout the second half of the rout vs. Ole Miss.
GO LADY VOLS!

Decent start so far.
Tiffany Clark with 2 fouls in about 80 seconds, so she takes a seat. Tied at 4-4 after an offensvie rebound frenzy by UT.
Vandy's really trying to draw fouls on Cain.
They’re trying so hard that they’re missing easy short-range shots because Cain is avoiding the calls.
29-17 UT leads with a timeout by Vandy after a Stricklen 3.
It’s been a rough game, but UT’s defense is carrying them yet again. Meanwhile, their offense is beginning to come online.
31-22 Good Gals at the half.
The foul situation is decent for the Lady Vols headed in to the second half. Kamiko Williams saw a fair amount of action in the first – a good sign for her development.
The stats are close so far:
Shooting:
44% FG (13-29), 4-10 3PT, 1-5 FT (!) UT
40% FG (9-22), 1-7 3PT, 3-4 FT Vandy
Rebounds:
15-13 UT (6-3 offensive)
Assists:
7-4 UT
Steals:
4-0 UT
Turnovers:
10-6, UT advantage
Fouls:
7 on Vandy, 6 on UT
Have they played this tournament at the Gwinnett Center before?
More empty seats than I would’ve thought
40-26 at the 16-minute timeout. Largest lead so far.
It’s not pretty, but it’s consistent. This team makes me feel far more confident than just two weeks ago.
And Cain is still on the bench with the lead growing. Gotta love that.
ESPN's boxscore is totally unreliable right now.
They have the foul count wrong on both Tuomi and Cain (both at three, but Tuomi listed at 4 and Cain listed at 2). But Vandy is in worse foul shape than Tennessee right now.
It's an interesting strategy by Vandy.
UT’s taller, so they’re sneaking in underneath armpits and trying to draw as many fouls as possible. It hasn’t worked out as well as they hoped, and Vandy is now in a dicey foul situation. But at least it was a creative approach.
Switching between this and the ASUN Champ Game...
Gotta pull for Coastal… despite Buzz being a terrible coach, he is the only connection I have to either team(even as a former coach at CC). Besides, Winthrop gets to the NCAAs enough.
Interesting note:
Marsh is Vandy’s leading scorer with 9 points. It’s been a long time since UT has held a leading scorer to such a low total this late in the game. Usually a team survives by getting one-dimensional and letting one player take all the shots.
It’s in part due to UT’s defense and in part due to Vandy spreading the ball around, but I wonder which has made a bigger difference.
Reminds me of the time I wore a black shirt...
to a Tennessee – Georgia game not even thinking about it…
I had seats on the row immediately below the visitors section… I’m fairly sure they were a tad bit confused.
And Tuomi has fouled out!
Sure, there’s 48 seconds left in a game that’s already over, but it’s the principle of the matter.
68-49 UT.
UT again got to rest starters and give the backups some experience. That will only help on Sunday.
All right, I'll actually watch the final
I’ve been out for the previous games for various reasons.
Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.
Cool.
I will probably miss a significant portion of it (especially the end) because of curling tonight.
