South Carolina beat Vandy!

wooo! As long as we outperform Vandy in the SEC tournament. We ought to earn a higher seed than them. But that might be tough

by golfballs03 on Mar 6, 2010 4:13 PM EST reply actions

purdue is in a close one

Penn St is at the line with the chance to cut it to 1. If so, it almost guaranteed they will have an opportunity to tie it at the end…

All I want for my birthday

is a Vols win!

I’ll probably only get to watch the first half live, because my kids are taking me out for dinner. Hopefully I can come back and watch the Vols win via DVR.

BTW, in Louisville, KY today, proudly wearing the orange.

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." Happy Birthday!

Make sure they don’t confuse it with Syracuse’s color and give you a hard time

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks!

Yeah, none of that blood-orange for me! That looked like a fun game for the UL fans.

What a day for Muse to come to Boston

I’ll miss both the Vols’ attempt to finish out 4-4 on the road and ETSU’s attempt to lock up an auto-bid. Have fun in the game thread, and GO VOLS (and Bucs)!

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 6, 2010 5:21 PM EST reply actions

It's Muse...

I believe that is considered an obligation.

by CabanX on Mar 6, 2010 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

Hokies putting it on Georgia Tech

VT will lock it up if they can hold this 12 point lead with 10 to play on the road

Winthrop up 4...

with ~8 left…

First bid up for grabs.

missed free throw, but Ole Miss rebounds

and Chris Warren buries a three to give the Rebels their first lead of the day – 66-65 Rebs, 10-0 Ole Miss run, :53 to play

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

and no one can hit a free throw

Ole Miss hits 1/2, Arkansas hits 1/2, and we’re back where we started

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

again, 1/2

68-66 Ole Miss, Arkansas ball, :08 to play, timeout in the frontcourt

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

Great block at the rim

and Washington can’t hit the follow…Ole Miss finishes the game on a 12-1 run, wins 68-66. We’ll see them Friday

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

Well we will be facing a hungry Ole Miss team on Friday

a win over us might get them in the tourney.

It's simple Cubs in the spring and summer, Vols in the fall and winter.

by cubvol on Mar 6, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...that's a problem

We were lucky to escape them the first time. I would’ve much rather played Arkansas again.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

Now...I may bet overly cautious/superstitious

But can we maybe NOT talk about seeing Ole Miss on Friday? We do have a history of sucking immensely in the SEC Tournament, ya know? Let’s win tonight and then focus on LSU on Thursday…

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

Okay good point

I am done talking about Ole Miss. Mississippi State then LSU

looks like we are going to

have to start our game on ESPN 360, still 6 min to go in Texas-Baylor game. And come on Arkansas.

Well outside of Rupp

we have not fared to well in big time road games. Vandy, Florida, Georgia all weren’t good road performances. Time to stop that trend right now.

We skunked 'em!

A 7-0 start, apparently. What in the world could we possibly have to review in a 15-point game with 41 seconds left?

great start

They're at the under 16

which I’m assuming is why ESPN didn’t immediately switch over

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:17 PM EST reply actions

Look at Kenny Hall!

being all authoritative on Varnado…13-0, best we’ve played at the start of a game BY FAR

Unbelievable

by cubvol on Mar 6, 2010 6:21 PM EST reply actions

Goodness.

I was going to take a peek at the Kentucky/MSU women’s game for a scouting report, but I’ve been waiting for this MSU to score once.

by David Hooper on Mar 6, 2010 6:23 PM EST reply actions

Hopson rushed that 3

and then they hit one…this will be a great test in maintaining focus and valuing possessions, a great lesson to learn before the tournament

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:24 PM EST reply actions

We NEEEEEED him to make a March run

I might even venture we need him desperately…

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

He's taking some load off Chism

I don’t see any way we can play Wayne 30 minutes 3 or 4 days in a row next week, so Hall stepping up now is big

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, Pajamas...

Good Pajamas = steal…Bad Pajamas = run to the rim with no prospects of legitimately making the basket

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:32 PM EST reply actions

Bad Pajamas version 2

What was that attempted entry to Weezy?

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

A dunk from BWill!

Glad to see that because I was starting to think that since the 17-0 start, we weren’t taking advantage of the MSU sloppiness.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:36 PM EST reply actions

Bad Pajamas v3

I’ll give him some benefit of the doubt because the shot clock was winding down…but ugh.

Lil' Pearl!

It wasn’t even a reverse layup!

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:46 PM EST reply actions

See, we're settling for quick threes now

we’re 1-8 from three and killing them…that should tell us to cut that out

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:47 PM EST reply actions

Back down to 11

Can we handle the runs that are surely going to come

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:48 PM EST reply actions

Pearl can't guard Varnado

just can’t…not knocking him, but we need to make sure that doesn’t happen

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:49 PM EST reply actions

That was a huge 4-point swing

Varnado foiled by Lil’ Pearl, Pajamas gets a layup on the other end

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:49 PM EST reply actions

Good point from Rucker on twitter

Wayne Chism has 0 points and hasn’t even taken a shot yet

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:51 PM EST reply actions

This is what I'm saying

We will get bitten if we’re not focused on Thursday. Heck, we almost lost to them the first time…

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

I agree we shouldn't overlook them

however, they’re the worst SEC team in recent memory…that game today was tied at 20 at halftime. We SHOULD destroy them, and I hope that’s what we see.

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

I wholeheartedly agree

But I’ve become disillusioned by 24 years of general suckage in the SEC Tournament.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

That's 24 years of my life

There has been more than 24 years of suckage

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

31 since we won it…I’ve never seen it either

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

Swipa is playing the 4

probably because of Chism…Skylar hasn’t played and got only 3 minutes against Arkansas

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:54 PM EST reply actions

We didn't lose any of the lead

38-21 at the half after Cam Tatum gets an oreb and a putback at the buzzer.

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:58 PM EST reply actions

Rick Stansbury is great

“Whatever we did in the first half? Let’s not do that no more.”

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 6:59 PM EST reply actions

He is honest

just a brutal 1st half for them, great for us though.

It's simple Cubs in the spring and summer, Vols in the fall and winter.

Lady Vols scouting report:

At the under 4, MSU leads Kentucky 29-24 in a very ugly game. There are 26 combined rebounds and both teams have primary players in foul trouble.

Either way, it looks like the winner is going to wear themselves out in the process, as both teams are running like crazy. (Part of that is constantly chasing turnovers.)

by David Hooper on Mar 6, 2010 7:01 PM EST reply actions

Halftime stats of note:

FG
UT 17 of 34, 50.0%
MSU 6 of 25, 24.0%

FT
UT 3 of 6, 50.0%
MSU 6 of 11, 54.5%

3PT
UT 1 of 9, 11.1%
MSU 3 of 12, 25.0%

Reb 22-16 UT (5-4 oreb UT)
Turnovers 8-5 MSU (7 UT steals)

Every Tennessee player has scored…except Chism

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:03 PM EST reply actions

Every Tennessee player has scored…except Chism

That deserves its own blockquote. That’s probably the only time we could ever see that statement.

by David Hooper on Mar 6, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

Also, check this out:

Varnado 3 pts 4 rebs, 1 of 3 FG, 1 of 6 FT

Chism hasn’t played with 2 fouls and 0 points

Brian Williams: 4 points 8 rebounds
Kenny Hall: 6 points 4 rebounds

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:05 PM EST reply actions

So after Chism leaves,

Williams and Hall will replace him with those kind of numbers? I’d call that ‘headband by committee’.

by David Hooper on Mar 6, 2010 7:06 PM EST up reply actions

I have no idea what got into Kenny

we didn’t see anything like this in the month of February, I assumed he’d hit the freshman wall…but he’s been the best offensive post player on the floor tonight

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

Hey, check this out:

What’s wrong with this picture?

by David Hooper on Mar 6, 2010 7:12 PM EST reply actions

seriously

in the segment about Woolridge and his music, ABC used a basketball with a Lady Vols logo on it

by golfballs03 on Mar 7, 2010 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

Focus, fellas

Rough start to the 2nd half. Nice follow by Pajamas!

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:18 PM EST reply actions

Okay, only Hopson

only Hopson gets the green light. And he gets a big one.

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:20 PM EST reply actions

Hops right back at ya!

Get a few stops and push this out to 20-ish

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:20 PM EST reply actions

That's such good defense by Pearl

if the guy isn’t 4-6 inches taller than he is, he can really frustrate them

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:21 PM EST reply actions

This is what I was saying the other night

His effort is so good…if he developed a little offense, he could be a legitimately good player.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

I feel bad for Stansbury

as they’re saying, MSU had very little to do with this ruling. Stansbury has made State an above average team for as long as he’s been there, but they’ve never made any real noise in March and they’ve flaming out here down the stretch. He needs someting to go right.

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Good grief

He shot that from the “I” on the MSU logo…now a dunk by Varnado. I don’t like the defensive effort of this group on the floor.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:25 PM EST reply actions

Every time they have had a chance to cut it to single digits, we've responded

I like the move to get Weezy and JP back in there…Weezy blocked.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:27 PM EST reply actions

I'm just parroting the commentators

But again, they had the ball down 11, missed, and we came back with a bucket.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:27 PM EST reply actions

52-39 Vols at the under 12

gave one away on the rebound there, but still in good shape…State is about to go into all-three pointer mode

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:28 PM EST reply actions

We've been able to maintain a comfortable lead

But we can’t quite put them away. I’d love to go on a run and dispose of them.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

Bad shot by Goins

Nice rebound and effort by Weezy.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:31 PM EST reply actions

Lead back down to 11

We just can’t quite put them away. We’re still in good shape as long as we stay poised here.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:35 PM EST reply actions

got it back to single digits

53-44…and then we immediately took it back with Prince, 55-44

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:37 PM EST reply actions

Whoo!

Tatum throws down the Maze oop. Nice response to get it back to 13. BWill to 15!

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Offensively

this has turned into the Prince & Hopson driving to the basket show…16 for JP, 12 for Scotty, no one else has more than 6

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:40 PM EST reply actions

Smart move by Weezy

Gets the block, runs out, but doesn’t force anything. Results in a BMaze layup. Back to 17. Great response by the men in orange.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:41 PM EST reply actions

61-44 at the under 8

State will shoot 2…but that’s an 8-0 run after State cut it to single digits

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:42 PM EST reply actions

I wish they would show that crying MSstate fan again

Living in Alabama is like living 50 years in the past, they are still just as racist, just as educated, the state constitution forbids any kind of public transportation, and all they can talk about is Bear Bryant

by goldballs on Mar 6, 2010 7:45 PM EST reply actions

Ugh, getting sloppy

This game isn’t over. Keep your heads on straight.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 7:48 PM EST reply actions

These guys can't be too pissed at the refs

they’ve called 6 more fouls on us, they’ve shot 7 more free throws

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:51 PM EST reply actions

we're just teasing them

67-52 at the under 4, Vols again answer a challenge with a run

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 7:53 PM EST reply actions

With 10:30 to go in the women's game (UK/MSU),

both teams have 15 fouls apiece. The difference is that all 15 of MSU’s are on their starters.

by David Hooper on Mar 6, 2010 7:56 PM EST reply actions

And Vanderbilt

Nice to hear :) I think Vandy got all their sucking out today against South Carolina…at least that’s what I’ll tell myself.

by VolnVA on Mar 6, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

Certainly they're playing better now than their average seasonal body of work.

And if that’s enough to get them into the 4-seedish conversation, why not?

by David Hooper on Mar 6, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

I like how Bobby Maze

doesn’t need to pass to run the clock out…he just dribbles around whatever

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 8:02 PM EST reply actions

75-59 final

Vols led 17-0, win by 16. Very impressive, recap coming

by Will Shelton on Mar 6, 2010 8:03 PM EST reply actions

Seriously?

At what time in the game? I might look for that in 360’s replay.

by David Hooper on Mar 6, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

thanks.

I’ll take a peek. Though I feel bad for the guy, especially after he saw his scholarship to to waste.
