here’s hoping that the biggest news story of the night is the prodigal son, albert haynesworth, coming back to the volunteer state.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
And here we go.
Saffold to the Rams, and we’re running. What the first round has in suspense, the subsequent rounds get in speed. (Well, GMs don’t usually get fired for their later-round picks, so that thrill doesn’t exist.)
A lot of these Chiefs guys are hoping for Cody
I don’t know how he and Berry could coexist on the same team.
by Incipient_Senescence on Apr 23, 2010 6:14 PM EDT reply actions
Upside to the three-day format:
The early-picking teams (i.e. the ones who stunk it up last year) had all day to make sure they made the right calls in the second round. Parity, ho!
TB picks a pair of DTs
Interesting

On his own, Price is a good get.
Coupled with their first, this does feel a little inefficient.

Who will the Chiefs pair with Berry?
Dexter McCluster. Curious.
by Incipient_Senescence on Apr 23, 2010 6:28 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, none of them anymore
We can show ’em the UT/Ole Miss film. May make them happier about Dex, although they may start to regret Berry.

And, conversely, Broncos fans are suddenly much happier.
I love the bipolar emotions of the draft.
by David Hooper on Apr 23, 2010 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Now, granted,
the Chiefs were very line-heavy in the last two years, so they probably feel like they can go for skill guys.
They still want an OT and DT
I don’t know much about their organization, so I assume they know what they need.

Just got a call from Al Davis
Said he’s considering drafting my dog because she has a good 40 time.
So Sayth King Zach I
I have to head out and be social for some bizarre reason.
Wives and their expectations… ;-)
Enjoy the rest. I’ll try to peek and see where Mo gets picked.
My dog will have to wait until the 3rd round.

Kansas City is going all SEC SPEEEEEED
Berry, McCluster, and now Javier Arenas.

Just snuck away for a bit.
I have no idea how good of a fit Cleveland is for Hardesty, but I’m thrilled he’s a second-rounder.
by David Hooper on Apr 23, 2010 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions
From the NFL.com bio of Hardesty
Hardesty lacks the top end speed to be a home run hitter at the next level. His lateral cutting range is only adequate further limiting his explosiveness and big-play potential. Must improve his ability to sustain blocks in pass protection if he wants to remain on the field for third down.
Seems to me that the same things were said of Emmet Smith coming out of college.
ESPN Instant Analysis
Jerome Harrison played well down the stretch last season coming back from injury, but he is not an every-down back. Hardesty’s combination of size and speed will make him the most logical starter immediately. Harrison will be allowed to be the third-down sub back, and James Davis to be the change-of-pace runner. Newly-acquired Peyton Hillis can continue his hybrid role that he had in Denver. This is a good pick.
Going to start? That would be awesome!
People were criticizing the Browns
For not taking McCoy over Hardesty. Well I guess Cleveland showed them!
by Incipient_Senescence on Apr 23, 2010 9:38 PM EDT reply actions
Makes sense, now that they pulled it off.
Hardesty will be able to contribute a lot sooner, and he’ll start out by making more money.

They do know each other much better than we know them.
Perhaps they can get a good intuition on what other teams will think about certain guys.

Joe Montana YAWNED on camera
I think it captures my feelings on the NFL draft perfectly
(aside from the UT players and watching the slow motion train wreck of some of the “greats” falling like Colt McCoy)
I do find it a lot of fun.
It’s totally silly to make such a big deal of things like we do, which is part of what I like about it. Just a big midterm party to break up the football offseason. Almost like an unbirthday.
by David Hooper on Apr 23, 2010 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm being a little dramatic - I don't mind it either but wish things moved along a little better
or they had more insight/background on the stuff (besides what I’ve seen on draft boards and player profiles already).
I just thought the yawning was funny on camera…
It was.
The draft wears everybody out. The announcers get really punchy by the final couple of rounds.
But yeah, they could do better with the dead time.

23/98 players from the SEC.
23.5%. I’m no math major, but that right there is the SEC representin’, baby.
Did the SEC have anybody freefall?
Taylor Mays kinda did, as well as Colt McCoy. But I don’t have much of a feel for that otherwise.

very little demand this year for NT
happened to dan too
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
This is true
Chiefs fans were going nuts. They wanted Cody at 2.4, and they passed for McCluster. They were going to hang Pioli until they got to their next pick (2.18) and Cody was still there. And they passed again! For Arenas. These folks were having a conniption. They needed a nose tackle, but I guess we’re to take from this that ol’ Pioli didn’t like Cody. Hard to argue with Berry though, and McCluster may surprise some people if the KC coaches know what Houston Nutt didn’t: get him the ball in space.
by Incipient_Senescence on Apr 24, 2010 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions
the other thing is
the nfl, playing NT requires more than just being a remarkably obese slob. you can’t just roll over and move the o-line like in college. teams are always going to be squeamish about a guy who has shown no commitment whatsoever to physical conditioning like cody. for the sake of the children, i wont post the topless photo, but i’m sure the gm’s saw plenty of times just how soft and jiggly he is.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
don't get me wrong
if you can get him on a stair master a few hours a day he could be really good. and playing next to ngata in baltimore sure doesn’t hurt. we might even see baltimore play 5 LBs behind those two for some crazy blitz looks. that’s a great situation for him.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Ron Jawarski just said that in 3 years Jonathan Crompton will be a rock solid starter in the NFL
loves his mechanics
Where would be best for him?
I’d like to see him go to Tennessee or Indianapolis, but that’s just the homer in me. New England would be great for him.
Why would you want the TV and the stereo on at the same time?
'Cause I like to party.
Honestly
I think he would best be served learning under a student of the game like Peyton or Brady. He has the physical tools to be successful in the NFL, he just needs to learn the mental side.
Why would you want the TV and the stereo on at the same time?
'Cause I like to party.
Agreed
Are there other students of game who are getting on in years that he might could learn under? Nothing immediately comes to mind.

Favre doesn't really count
But he would only serve to increase Crompton’s gunslinging Crapton ways. Maybe Hasselbeck in Seattle?

Yeah, he does
What are other spots who have a reliable QB but might not for a long time, may be in the market for a backup? Jacksonville or Pittsburgh might be decent fits. Possibly New Orleans. Brees is only a year younger than Brady.

Oakland did end up with Bruce Campbell. Last week, he was going to the Raiders with the 8th pick in the draft. Turns out, he went to the Raiders with the 8th pick of the 4th round.

Gonna be a thin year for us again next year I'm afraid
Mel Kiper has Luke Stocker as the third best TE for next year’s draft…and no other Tennessee players on the board
Really?
I know we don’t lose a whole ton, but I’d expect Gerald Jones and Chris Walker to get picked up at some point. Gerald Williams might could too, depending on the kind of season he puts in this year.

We'll have more
Walker, Williams, Moore will all get into the draft assuming no injury issues.
doubt jax would trade him to us
but the titans should be all over that.

Jacques McClendon
To Indianapolis
Why would you want the TV and the stereo on at the same time?
'Cause I like to party.
Can you guys give us Colts fans a rundown on McClendon?
We never heard his name before and were wondering what he brings to the table
Physically, he's extremely strong
Set school records in the weight room. So he has that tool at least. He never turned in to a dominant O-lineman, but I don’t know what he lacked and whether it’s something that can be coached. Not an expert on the line, myself.

Played all four years here
Lots of experience
by Will Shelton on Apr 24, 2010 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Our offensive linemen will be tough to read.
Our Wheel-O-Coaches over the last few years were hardest on them. During Fulmer’s final year, the Clawfense had them switching positions based on the play call such that they weren’t “right” or “left” guards, but “strong side” and “fast side” guards (whatever that meant). And Cutcliffe’s system was different from Kiffin’s system to boot, so McClendon has seen several different offensive schemes on an annual basis.
But he’s very strong and adapts well. I’m not sure about speed/agility; you’ll want to read up on that. But I like the matchup for him and Indy, especially if he can have a year.

Pike and LeFevor haven’t gone either, so who knows at this point? Only five QBs have been drafted.

I really like what Carolina has done with their 4 picks
Clausen, LeFey, Armanti Edwards, Norwood. That’s a pretty good pedigree of players; with Delhome out and really the 2nd best QB in this draft still on the table, love them taking that. LeFey and Edwards are two very, very different WRs (Armanti Edwards was the 4-year starting QB at App State, if you recall, and absolutely blew open a ton of records) that are comparable to Moose & Steve Smith, and Norwood, as we well know, is a playa.

That makes six Vols, right?
Berry, Williams, Hardesty, McClendon, Scott, Crompton. Interesting that it’s 4 offensive players and 2 defensive ones. Given the last few years on the Hill, that doesn’t feel right somehow.
by David Hooper on Apr 24, 2010 1:48 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
+1 Rec - That, my curling friend, is the issue in a nutshell, isn't it?
We were told it was the players (and to some extent it is, because Florida and Bama had way more players drafted), but it wasn’t like we were shut out like a Vanderbilt. But it had to be coaching to some extent – right, Phil? or Lane?
Oddity: I'm a little surprised that Pike is behind a few other already-drafted QBs.
It has to be his physique, because he’s probably the best passer in the draft and he is really comfortable in the pocket.
Is the NFL scared of Brian Kelly?
by Incipient_Senescence on Apr 24, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, Pike went to the Panthers in round 6
And CBSSports gave them an F+ for the pick. I don’t see why. Why not take two rookie QBs and have them fight it out, especially when you don’t have to waste a good pick on either of them?
by Incipient_Senescence on Apr 24, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I like the pick.
They’re using a second and a sixth to try and find a long-term QB solution. With luck, they’ll even get a long-term qb plus a backup. That’s not a bad investment at all.
And because neither are firsts, they don’t have that extra year on the rookie contract.
by David Hooper on Apr 24, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Prisco just forgot that late picks tend to have red flags
That’s why they’re late picks. Yet in the 45 picks so far in the 6th and 7th rounds, he’s given only 9 grades higher than a C+. Compare that to the 8 high grades he gave in the first 9 picks of the draft (the exception being Oakland).
by Incipient_Senescence on Apr 24, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Sounds right.
Another possibility is that he’s focusing on team needs, but not paying enough attention as to whether the available players effectively fill those needs.
by David Hooper on Apr 24, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Part of the Campbell trade was a 2012 draft pick.
I hadn’t thought of it before, but one thing to watch for in Oakland is how they trade their futures. I have a feeling that if Al Davis begins to see the writing on the wall, he’ll sell off the long-term future of the team to try to get one last short-term chance at a ring. A huge run on draft picks several years into the future, or a lot of free agent negotiations that will come due at about the same time could be indicators of the end of the road for him.
Or not. It’s not like he’s sane.
Wow
Jonathan Dwyer lasted a lot longer than you would’ve thought.
by Incipient_Senescence on Apr 24, 2010 2:31 PM EDT reply actions
Apologies to Prisco
It’s Joe Dove doing these grades now. And of the 86 guys drafted in the last two rounds, 15 got A’s or B’s. Seriously? Obviously not grading based on what’s available.

Everyone knew he was going to go undrafted
He was just tired of school at UT. Was having a whole lot of trouble passing his classes, and I’ve also heard rumors that he needed money to pay child support. Needed to get a job somewhere, whether it was NFL, CFL, or whatever.

My question is what happened to Rico?
He came in to UT as the next big thing, got playing time early, spent multiple years as a starter, but not only did he never quite get the expected dominance, he didn’t show enough to be drafted at all? Really? I guess we shouldn’t have a terrible time replacing him.
