Good news for Tennessee basketball
Non-brawl Talking Points for 7/14/10:
- That 6'9" center who both Hooper and I initially and incorrectly knee-jerk supposed was a really tall and skinny offensive lineman who turned out to actually be a much more reasonable center of the roundball variety?
He signed. - Via Wes Rucker's Twitter feed, ESPN's Jay Bilas says that Tennessee guard Scotty Hopson was "the best athlete and the most fluid player" at the LeBron James Skills Academy. The best of whom, you ask? Oh, a whole bunch of guys ($), including players from Duke (Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith), Connecticut (Kemba Walker), Georgetown (Chris Wright), and Florida (Vernon Macklin and Chandler Parsons). LeBron has scheduled a miniseries to address the many ways he has helped these young men become . . . fluid and stuff.

Woo for positive news!
I wonder if Jay Bilas was aware that he was referring to a Vol with that kind of praise. He’s usually pretty underwhelmed by anyone not wearing a Duke jersey.

Or anyone outside of the ACC.
I did see Scotty Hopson in a nice big beautiful orange outfit on the front page of ESPN’s College Basketball page.
Eric Berry Eats Landsharks For Breakfast.
Bilas thought he was one of the new Duke signees. He later retracted his praise when he found out it was a Tennessee guy.

What Bilas Said
Hopson was the best athlete and the most fluid player at the camp. In transition and off the bounce, Hopson made a bunch of highlight reel plays. But he can fool you if you are not watching closely. Hopson can be much better than he is right now, which is what you would expect of a junior that is still developing on a normal track toward being a really good player. Hopson still needs to influence the game on both ends and needs to concentrate harder on playing every play. He has it in him.
Here is what Fran Fraschilla said:
Hopson is an NBA-level shooting guard as an athlete, but proved to be a streaky volume shooter at the camp. Still, he’s poised for a big season in the Vols’ system.
"Hopson can be much better than he is right now"
We can’t wait on him another year – not because it’s fair to expect juniors to be playing their best basketball, but because our team has to have his best basketball right now.

“needs to concentrate harder on playing every play”

You are spot on
a lot of his problems are in his head
Once Hopson develops a killer attitude and decides to impose his will, his skills will be more evident.
I hate Kobe, but he does have that killer attitude. (Larry Bird had it a long time ago for the old folks in the house).
