The Many Faces of Neyland Stadium
The Mrs. took a few pictures of the stadium renovations. For those who are not in Knoxville, Neyland's front facelift is nearing completion and some of the aesthetic details are going up. There is still a lot of work to do - particularly with the front amphitheater/courtyardish area, but the final product is definitely coming into focus.

Can you name all six faces?

LOVE the black & white player photos
glad to see we’ve got a picture of Johnny Majors on Phillip Fulmer Way.
Hadn't picked up on that.
You’re on a roll tonight.

Hello ladies. Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. Sadly, he isn't me.
Dickey was the only one I couldn't recognize at first glance.
But I blame that on not growing up in Tennessee.

...that's also because it's Doug Atkins

Oy
See, that’s why I asked. Cause I couldn’t do it.

That's soooo embarrassing for me.
I’ve got a Doug Atkins autographed helmet and cards and all kinds of stuff.
At least I had the first name I suppose.

And Dickey does deserve some sort of recognition

Yeah
And I can even forgive all the Florida nonsense because of this:
Dickey is credited with starting three Tennessee football traditions that endure today.2 He placed the iconic “Power T” decal on the sides of the Volunteers’ helmets, had the Neyland Stadium endzones painted in an orange-and-white checkerboard pattern, and originated the Pride of the Southland marching band’s “T” formation through which Volunteer players enter the field

Funny
Johnny Majors was the one I had to think about for a minute, but I realized it’s because I always see him as the coach rather than the player since he was Tennessee’s coach during my formative fandom years…

The inset player photos...
…are fabulous. I think when this is finally completed, it will be stunning, and will leave a lot of fans of visiting teams quite impressed.
Of course, the argument will always be who’s photos should be included.
Will – I’m with you: I’m thrilled to see a photo of Majors – the choice was which to use: player or coach? Either could be argued, but I think they made the correct choice.
I like the choice of player over coach as well.
That leaves Neyland as the only non-player, and I really think that’s the way to do it. That avoids any conflict on which coaches should be up there and which shouldn’t.
The other tack would have been to use images of players from other teams who lost to Tennessee. A huge Stoerner image would have been lovely.

Or maybe...
just the ball as it lay on the ground all by its lonesome right before we pounced on it!!!!!!!!!!

The inclusion of Al Wilson thrills me to no end
I’m so glad they found a way to honor him

Al Wilson's inclusion...
…is where the argument starts for me. No doubt, he was the leader of the team that won it all. But, that is the only thing that would separate him from other great LBs that we’ve had the fortune of playing in orange. Naumoff, Reynolds, Kiner… My God!
So where exactly is the Neyland Statue going? Can anyone point out the location using these pictures as reference…
Neyland Stadium-It goes to eleven.
It's going...
to be one of a dozen statues lined up just in front of the opposing team’s endzone… using state of the art technology they will move between endzones as needed.
Thanks for posting those pictures.
I have not lived in TN since 95 and I have not been to a vols game since the early 90’s. I grew up in Middle TN so I was not very close to Knoxville, but we always made the trip a couple of times a year. It is nice to see the new face lift that the stadium is getting.
My son is really wanting to go to TN for a Vols and TItans game. So next season we are planning on trying to find a weekend when they are both playing at home so we can hit both games.
