Seeing as my RTT entry went down in flames several days ago...

I’m down to conference pride and slim hopes in my office pool. Accordingly, go Red Raiders, Gators, Sparty, Bulldogs, Horned Frogs, and Huskies!

Lou Brock loves Lamp.

by birdjam on Jan 1, 2011 1:33 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I still have a shot in both bowl pools

But my local pool has a guy who’s 17-5 right now, so I need everything to go my way.

Go:

Texas Tech
Florida
Alabama
Miss. St.
Wisconsin
Oklahoma (but UConn keep it within 17)

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 1:35 PM EST reply actions

Nah

I just picked my favorite 10 against the spread, just to see how I’d do if I were actually gambling. If I do well enough, I might start gambling, but I’m too conservative to do it without a track record of success.

Currently, I’m 5-3-1. (wins: Air Force, SDSU, Notre Dame, USF, Oklahoma State. losses: SMU, Missouri, Baylor. draw: Louisville).

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Smart.

Though I think there are easier things to bet on than bowl games.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Well, college football is the thing I like the most

So that’s what I pay the most attention to. And the easiest thing is the one you know the most about.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

So Alabama comes out on fire.

That’s because this is the mighty Cap 1 Bowl, not the measly Sugar Bowl.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 1:49 PM EST reply actions

The appropriate application of illegal substitution

Michigan State breaks the huddle with 12 and #12 tries to run off the field. Way to go, non-Big 10 refs!

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 1:59 PM EST reply actions

There were still 12 players on the field, even without #12.

They had 8 on the LOS and 4 in the backfield and #12 running off.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

I can't wait until we have actual run blocking next year.

We’ll miss Poole, but I think Neal came along well this year. It’ll be nice to have something to keep defenses honest.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 2:04 PM EST reply actions

There are more productive things I could be doing

But today just seems to encourage being absolutely worthless.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 2:05 PM EST reply actions

Alabama blowing out Michigan State

I’m going to switch to the other SEC games…because I apparently picked the SEC to beat the Big 10 3 times today.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 2:11 PM EST reply actions

I did too

Mississippi State is the one that worries me. But TCU is my biggest call of the day, because everybody else seems to have Wisky.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

I went with the Horned Frogs, too

But you have a legit shot to win. Me…not so much.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Still not sure how that's possible in a confidence pool

When I’ve lost my 29, 32, 33, and 35. But I’m glad to be in the mix, just hoping some games fall my way.

I’m in one non-confidence pool, and I figured 13-9 should be about winning. Yet some random guy (probably a little kid picking at random) is 17-5. So I basically need everything to go my way from here on out. Need to win seven of these eight: Alabama, Mississippi State, TCU, MTSU, Nevada, Auburn, Stanford, and Pittsburgh.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

You can get all but MTSU

Cuz I picked Miami…but everything else looks good to me :)

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

21-point lead for Bama

That’s ballgame, right? Surely it would be impossible for the Tide to squander that large a lead…

Lou Brock loves Lamp.

We shall see...

But games like this are why it remains absolutely amazing to me that this team lost 3 games this year. When they are on their game I still feel like this is the best team in the country. So much talent.

Lou Brock loves Lamp.

by birdjam on Jan 1, 2011 2:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I agree

But when they’re playing at their average, they’re probably about #12.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

True.

Lou Brock loves Lamp.

by birdjam on Jan 1, 2011 2:40 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

So I've decided I'm going out at halftime

Am I just going out for a burrito, or am I going to get a burrito AND go to the grocery store? Hmm…

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 2:22 PM EST reply actions

I've decided to go with just the burrito

Because I don’t want to miss football and I can go to the grocery store later. Big decisions in 2011!

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Foiled!

Chipotle was closed…I was forced to go with Panera cuz it was next door, but I would’ve gone with Jimmy John’s had I known Chipotle wasn’t an option. Curses!

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

So even if you run it 90% of the time

You can score like crazy on Michigan. The Fightin’ Cowbells go up 24-14 and Chris Relf is just running all over the Wolverines.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 2:35 PM EST reply actions

Terrible punt by Florida

But one Matt Dodge would have loved to make.

Lou Brock loves Lamp.

by birdjam on Jan 1, 2011 2:39 PM EST via mobile reply actions

All right, it's burrito time

Like the Terminator, I’ll be back.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 2:43 PM EST reply actions

Wow, Paterno reminded me of Dick Clark in that halftime interview.

He HAS to hang it up soon, right?

Lou Brock loves Lamp.

by birdjam on Jan 1, 2011 2:48 PM EST via mobile reply actions

How can anybody here root for Florida?

Texas Tech – ’cause I picked ’em
’Bama – SEC pride
Penn State – My hatred for Florida knows no bounds
MSU – SEC
TCU – I picked them and I like BCS controversy
Oklahoma – I picked them but I think UConn winning would be hilarious

Florida Sucks!

by Orange Swarm on Jan 1, 2011 2:50 PM EST reply actions

Pure avarice

A Florida win helps me in bowl pools. And yes, it does make me feel dirty and ashamed.

Lou Brock loves Lamp.

by birdjam on Jan 1, 2011 2:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I picked 'em too, but I wouldn't mind seeing them lose.

If they’re going to get favorable treatment in bowl selection, they can handle a loss.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

It's 15 points for me, which I'm guessing is fairly typical.

So winning or losing that one would probably do nothing of consequence.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

I picked against them

just so I wouldn’t have any reason to root for them but I can see where you’re coming from. I did think Florida would win but they’re not looking particularly strong at the moment.

Florida Sucks!

by Orange Swarm on Jan 1, 2011 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

I picked Penn State

Until Meyer stepped down. Figured that’d motivate Florida. Maybe it didn’t.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

At this point, I think it's up to Penn State.

They actually have offense-like substance, so they have better potential, but their mean is lower.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yep

I have the chance to lose my top four most confident picks if TTech blows it.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Nebraska was my 35

We see how that worked out.

Florida Sucks!

by Orange Swarm on Jan 1, 2011 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

My 34.

Hawaii was my 35. (Hey, I nearly had their number of turnovers pegged with that.) ;-)

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

SMU was 35

I had faith in June Jones. TTech 34, Nebraska 33, Georgia 32. BYU has already delivered my 31, and Bama looks strong with 30.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

Not a clue.

I don’t know who is where, and I’m waiting to see if they change the names before bothering to learn it.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Wow. Totally bogus intentional grounding call against Mich. St.

As if they didn’t have enough problems. QB got hit from behind as he was throwing it. The ball still went past the LOS and sorta near a receiver.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:09 PM EST reply actions

I hate seeing anyone leave the field on a cart...

… but presumably this kid from Northwestern is one of the 400,000 NCAA athletes who will be going pro in something other than sports.

Lou Brock loves Lamp.

by birdjam on Jan 1, 2011 3:10 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Didn't realize that Miss. St. got the ball first in the second half.

This thing could get really ugly if they score on the opening drive.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:19 PM EST reply actions

Ooh! Miss. St. is punting!

(Side note: never let Miss. St. and Mich. St. play at the same time again. I like using MSU without ambiguity.)

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Time for me to go

see True Grit. I hope it’s as good as everybody says it is.

Florida Sucks!

by Orange Swarm on Jan 1, 2011 3:20 PM EST reply actions

So what do you think happens to Rich Rod?

If I were a Michigan fan, I’d be about ready to cut him loose.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

They certainly have the money to cut him if they want.

I think the odds are good that they buy him out, if Harbaugh is willing to take the job. I just don’t know how close to NSD Harbaugh is willing to wait.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

I really like Harbaugh

But I’m pretty impressed with Brady Hoke as well. Wonder how they’d feel about him.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, right. Forgot about Hoke.

I think they’d take him. He’s turned around every program he’s touched so far.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

I imagine he'd have a lot of success

But it’d probably be a length turnaround after they’ve recruited for RichRod’s system.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

That's the big one.

The next coach will probably want some leniency for two years. Not sure if Michigan fans are up for that, given their recent record against OSU.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

I also think it'd be easier to get Hoke.

Harbaugh will be more expensive, and he already has made Stanford a great gig for himself. I think Harbaugh depends on how he feels about the team post-Luck (whether that’s 2011 or 2012).

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

Texas Tech successfully running out the clock?

6 runs in 7 plays, 2 first downs…NW just took their last TO.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 3:31 PM EST reply actions

But they can't get the 3rd first down

So they’ll try the UT-UNC scenario with a 7-point lead instead of 3. NW will get the ball back with just under 30 seconds to go.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

Alabama up 42-0 on MSU

My employer is probably not thrilled with the lack of eyeballs on that game.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 3:33 PM EST reply actions

That'll be reviewed

Cuz dude was definitely down and flipped it up in the air. But the clock will be running with 16 seconds left and they need a TD. Not looking good for NW.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Under review and will be overturned

Big break for Northwestern, because this stops the clock, and it should be ticking.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 3:38 PM EST reply actions

Stupid spike by N'western.

Why didn’t they have the play ready to go?

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:42 PM EST reply actions

RR has one lifeline: fire Gerg.

That might pacify enough people to give him one more year.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:47 PM EST reply actions

Robinson, Greg has to be toast

There’s no way a defense this bad could retain its coordinator.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt it

No way they hold Mississippi State scoreless. But four touchdowns beats one field goal UNLESS there’s a missed 2 pt conversion

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

They go for it on 4th and goal

And don’t get it. With the way MSU runs the ball, this one has to be over.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

So Florida needs to win

But not by more than the sum of the points that PSU scores via FG + XP (currently 6)…because that way I win in the picks AND Streak For The Cash on ESPN. Whoo!

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 3:51 PM EST reply actions

Yup.

Even a 3-and-out means that Michigan just wasted 5 minutes they couldn’t afford to waste.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

And now it is

45-14. If Michigan’s not careful, they’re going to lose worse than the 2001 Cap One Bowl.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

The Big Ten Champion

Just scored. They now trail the SEC West #4 49-7.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:07 PM EST reply actions

Michigan is conceding.

You can’t constantly run WR screens trailing by this much. Takes way too much time.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:07 PM EST reply actions

But at least they didn't punt.

Though I wouldn’t have held that against them at this point.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

The NCAA will issue a statement...

that the referees got it right, and you are probably hallucinating

by Caban on Jan 1, 2011 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

Certainly.

If the buzz doesn’t come in time, there’s no review. So technically, yes.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

It's reviewable, but what happens afterwards is limited.

Florida recovered so quickly that a whistle obviously didn’t affect the post-fumble play. They would have awarded it at the spot of the recovery.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Penn State fumbled the ball.

That should get overturned, but PSU got the snap off prior to the review. Urban should have thrown the flag.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:11 PM EST reply actions

Urban looks like he's going to toss cookies.

Wonder if that’s because the offense is on the field.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:15 PM EST reply actions

Consider Michigan's perception on this one:

+ Worst bowl loss ever.

+ Miss. St. is a perennial cellar dweller in the SEC.

+ Miss. St. runs a spread offense, just like Michigan.

+ Miss. St. has been at it for less time than Michigan.

+ Miss. St. does it with lesser recruiting and a far, far lower budget.

+ Academics and all that.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:19 PM EST reply actions

Wow

Just woke up and gee is the SEC West angry today

by Rx Salt on Jan 1, 2011 4:21 PM EST reply actions

Dadgum

And after missing my 32, 33, and 35. Hope it keeps up though. I don’t have a lot of points on any of the last couple games.

And yet I’m still 4 back in my local pool. Leader is 18-5, I’m 14-9

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

I don't suppose FOP has a "scenario generator" sort of thing?

I always do a Yahoo bracket for March Madness and you can see how it all shakes out if all your picks happen. We could see whether I_S can be caught or not if we had a scenario generator!

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

They did when it launched

And then it went away when the picks were locked in. I was confused.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I noticed that

I’m the only one in the top three with TCU in my other pool as well. That’s gonna be a huge game. Although in my other pool, I still need six of these seven: TCU, Stanford, Ohio State, MTSU, Nevada, Pittsburgh, Auburn. And, depending on which six, that might only tie me for first.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

The other big one is MTSU

The spread is only 1 point, but it seems a lot of people have confidence in Miami. Not sure why.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

I have 12 on them.

It was a lack of else. Both teams are inconsistent.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I hope the Blue Raiders can deliver my 3

Mostly to avoid the Redhawks delivering anything to anyone else.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

Florida settling for the field goal.

I think the figgie is the smart play here. Even is PSU gets a TD, you only need a FG to win.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:21 PM EST reply actions

Nice drop there, PSU

Florida delivering the 25 would really help me.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:30 PM EST reply actions

First down, Gators

I’m not sure the Lions have enough gas left for a stop…we’ll see.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 4:36 PM EST reply actions

Stuffed

PSU will get the ball back with 3 minutes left down 6.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

Missed it

And they snapped it awful fast for run-out-the-clock mode

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

How much authority do you think JoePa has these days?

He just looks so…old. My grandparents are his age, and I love them, but they’d have no business attempting to run a major college football program.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 4:40 PM EST reply actions

3rd and 3

25 yards away. 25 points on Florida. C’mon team that’s not Penn State!

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:43 PM EST reply actions

never mind

The 2nd place person had 31 on Florida. And third had 24. :-/

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

A really tight cluster after number 3.

I won 10 points on MSU and dropped from 4 to 11.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

Ironically

Depending on situations, I might need a loss in the Nevada game to lock it up. I have 7 on the ’Pack, and the 2nd and 3rd place people have 30+.

Which sucks, because I need a win in that game (along with a million other things) to win my straight up pool

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

True

And if TCU and MTSU take care of business (making it matter in my straight up), it might not matter in the RTT pool.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

My 15 on Florida could drop me to 20ish if everybody else had a lot of them as well.

That means I’d go from #4 to 20 by winning all the games in that stretch.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 4:51 PM EST reply actions

I'm afraid of that happening to me

Because I still have four games left in which I have fewer than 10 points (TCU, MTSU, Arkansas, Nevada)

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

30 on Florida bumped me back up

But I was down on the day despite going 3-0.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

TCU slipping all over the place

Equipment managers say they didn’t bring another pair. idiots.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 6:10 PM EST reply actions

How did that half end so fast?

I guess because Wisky kept running. 14-13, and I’m sure TCU feels cheated with that last sequence.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 6:22 PM EST reply actions

That was some funky clock management

4th and inches, all 3 timeouts, and Wisky let it run down and kick a FG. Hmm…

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 6:22 PM EST reply actions

Wisconsin had the ball for 7:04 to end the quarter

And TCU should’ve gotten it back twice. They’re really going to need a good drive to start the second half.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

0-5

You forgot Northwestern. And wouldn’t that be wonderful?

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

I'm actually rooting for the Badgers here

Both parents went to UW, and I’ve been to my fair share of games at Camp Randell.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

I've applied to the UW PhD program in Philosophy (no word back yet)

But I have 2 points on TCU and a 35 point lead. #2 has 34 on Wisconsin. Go Frogs!!!!!!

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

Hope you get in

Madison is a cool, albeit COLD town. Also, pretty much all bars/restaurants have world class beer selections in Wisconsin.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks

I have been to Madison once, but it was two weeks before I turned 21.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

shame

I could also give you a lot of advice for road trips to Milwaukee, as if you needed any (it has more bars per capita than any city in America).

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

Certainly wouldn't mind going back there

Although it’s not one of my 5-6 choices. Notre Dame, Yale, and Princeton might not be in wonderful areas, but the programs are fantastic.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

South Bend and New Haven

Are 2 of the worst places I’ve ever been in my life. But I would’ve gone to Yale for undergrad had they deemed me worthy of it :P

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

Totally fair

Though you can’t do much better for a public school than UW

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

The only public schools ahead of them on my list

Are UNC, UC-Riverside, and Colorado. And UNC is dropping. >:(

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, and Ohio State

David Sanson is at Ohio State. And he’s awesome.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

When my time for my PhD comes

I’m almost certainly going to study in Europe. There are some great deals out there for foreign students…and I like the idea of slowly circumnavigating the globe with my dog.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

oh

and soccer, culture, women and all that. Learning is somewhere on my list, too.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

heh. nice

what will you be studying, when the time comes?

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 7:06 PM EST up reply actions

International Relations

I’m about 2-3 years out at the moment. My grandpa told me not to return home until I’ve learned Korean, so I’m going to stay here for awhile and save some dough while making him proud.

I haven’t decided yet on my specific area of study within IR, but there are several conflict prevention programs that have caught my eye. Korean+Conflict Prevention=Useful, methinks.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

Ah, so being abroad would make sense

Sounds pretty marketable though. Unlike Philosophy (which, obviously, is why I’ll be staying in the States)

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 7:13 PM EST up reply actions

In Korea, at least :P

Very cool, though. I have really enjoyed all my time abroad and wish I’d had the fortitude to go live somewhere for a while. Maybe I can spend some time abroad in business school…

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks

I really wish this were more about “fortitude” than “pragmatism.” I had been working for a non-profit prior to this, but we lost our funding, thanks to our wonderful economy.

It’s just a tough time to be a young person in America right now.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough.

I curl with some Wisconsin grads, so a Wisky win wouldn’t be all bad.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Pulling a Mike Price

New Pitt coach Mike Haywood has been fired because of a domestic battery charge. Oops.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 6:51 PM EST reply actions

Oh

I thought it was because of his lack of mustache

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

Defend zone read

Your DE is unblocked. TCU gains 12 yards

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 6:52 PM EST reply actions

Seems like we get to ask this question every year

If TCU ends up winning by 2 or 3 scores and Oregon and Auburn play a really sloppy game next week…any chance the AP goes rogue and puts TCU #1?

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 6:55 PM EST reply actions

Yes

And honestly, I don’t know if it’s unwarranted this year. UW was looking as hot as anyone (including Oregon and Auburn) coming into this game, with only one loss at Michigan St.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

TCU is for realsies

They have played a great game.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 7:11 PM EST reply actions

This was just a very bad year to be this good

As there really has been no justifiable argument for putting TCU in the NCG over either Auburn or Oregon. All three programs have been top-notch.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:13 PM EST up reply actions

Totally agreed

And Wisconsin would be a huge scalp to collect. I think it’ll take a sloppy game between Oregon and Auburn for them to get significant votes for #1.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

Well, TCU did get their D some rest

Would’ve been nice to have better shoes though.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 7:15 PM EST reply actions

I can never keep straight the college vs. NFL rule

I think it’s good because the person never entered the end zone. In the NFL, it would be a touchback because the ball crossed the plane. At least I think that’s how it works.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

I think you have it backwards

But they didn’t call it that way, so maybe I have it backwards.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

UW basically is in 4 down territory

…considering how long it takes them to move down the field

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:30 PM EST reply actions

That throw was ill-advised

2 Badgers run into each other to prevent the interception. Badgers get it back with 13 minutes to go.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 7:31 PM EST reply actions

If OU wins by enough

can we take away the Big East auto-bid status?

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:34 PM EST reply actions

good thing PATs are untimed plays

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

I can get a two dollar bill for a 10 bucks!

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:43 PM EST reply actions

Nope

I have a couple though. Had to spend one when I ran out of money on a train though

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

the best part?

They listed the value as $30, so naturally $10 is a steal.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

Not so far

Shades of Ron Dayne, big Jon Clay rumbling down the field.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

This is coming down to a 2-point conversion

If Wisky scores and doesn’t get it, they’re in bad shape having had to burn 2 timeouts already.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 7:57 PM EST reply actions

Worst case, it'll be tied

I don’t feel good about TCU if this goes to OT…but they’ll only need a FG to win it in regulation.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

Surprising call, for sure

They’ve run it all the way down the field…you don’t think you can get 3 yards?

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing

you run for 80 yards on that drive, then pass for the conversion attempt

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, if you're gonna pass

Go PA. It’d be likely to work given that you just rammed it down their throat for 6 minutes.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Got the high bounce

But it had too much forward momentum

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

So doing some end of game math

20-25 seconds left assuming they punt?

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 8:04 PM EST reply actions

Ballgame

How ’bout them Horned Frogs?

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 8:06 PM EST reply actions

TCU deserves first place votes

Shame there were so many good teams this year.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 8:11 PM EST reply actions

I agree

This would be a great year for a “Plus 1” formula.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

Anaconda had 27 points on TCU. He (or she) will win if Ohio State, Pitt, and Nevada all pull through. Might be able to win with two of the three.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 8:14 PM EST reply actions

I suppose I could figure it out if I wanted to

But I don’t suppose there’s any way I make up 56 points on you and jump 5 other people as well?

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

To jump me, you'll need wins by [Oklahoma or Arkansas], Miami (OH), and Nevada

And losses by either Pitt or Auburn. A lot of the people just behind have Ohio State and a couple have MTSU, so wins by Arkansas and Miami might jump you up there.

Also, there’s a “What if Scenarios” tab that just went live, although the line currently isn’t taking me anywhere.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

UConn's running back is an idiot

He had the first down and stepped out short of it. And now they’re punting

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 8:48 PM EST reply actions

Any Big East team could've beaten us

Rutgers would’ve been a big upset, but not the others. Then again, we could’ve beaten every Big East team and probably would’ve been a decided underdog against only WVU.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

I'm going to cook some pasta

I’ll be back in a bit…with some very exciting results of my very own bowl pick ‘em, bootleg scenario generator. Ya’ll are still in the running. Teaser!

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 9:13 PM EST reply actions

Landry Jones starts 12/12

And then throws a pick six. UConn backers and Tee Martin thank him.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 9:31 PM EST reply actions

Who is worse...

Matt Millen or Bob Davie? Strictly on their “announcing” prowess?

by GhostDance on Jan 1, 2011 9:38 PM EST via mobile reply actions

And anyone on ESPNU

Seriously, where did they find those guys? I’m convinced most of them are watching their first football game. Ever.

by kingofzachland on Jan 1, 2011 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

For serious...

At least the woman on there knows she’s not Lombardi.

by GhostDance on Jan 1, 2011 9:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Well that sucks

I will actually go down in the standings if all my picks work out. The think the best I can hope for is a finish in 11th place in FOP (because I’m too lazy to determine how things shake out if picks go differently). Booooooooo.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 10:00 PM EST reply actions

What's interesting in messing around with things

Is how many people didn’t mess with the confidence points…they just made the picks. A lot of people have most of their highest point games still to come.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

I've noticed that

That’s why I’m not too happy with a 30 point lead. Lots of people breathing down my neck.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

Right you are

You finish 2nd if you get all your picks…might be 1st if Nevada loses. Again, I’m too lazy to really play around with it.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

I have Taka11 overtaking you

You pick up points on Taka on OSU, but then Taka is one of those people who didn’t appear to change the points around.

I’ll caveat all these conversations with the fact that this is based off me adding rows of numbers in Excel…lots of chances for errors.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

Ah

I didn’t even check against the guy in 25th place. lol

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

I figured the determining factor at this juncture is points lost

In trying to see if I could win, anybody who has lost more points than me can’t overtake me if all my picks work out. That same logic should apply for others.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

I think I need to miss two games to keep him back

Because we agree on 6/7. Missing on Nevada would be in my best interests in general. Missing on MTSU would help me against him, but it’d hurt me against a lot of other people. I have no idea what to cheer for, except that Arkansas better dang win or I’m toast.

Also, that “what if scenarios” tab is so tantalizing, but broken.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:26 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, agreed

And would’ve saved me an hour or more of time screwing around in Excel…but it was probably more fun this way :)

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

The "all but Nevada" gets me so close, but not quite

I need “all but Nevada and one more” and that one more can’t be Arkansas or Stanford. Which means my rooting interests in this pool will very likely be opposite of my rooting interests in my other pool.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

Is there $$$ involved in the other pool?

Because whichever one has the higher payoff, that’d get my rooting interest.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

No money in the other one

So this one has my rooting interest, provided Arkansas and Stanford win. If either one of them lose, it probably knocks me out of contention in the RTT pool.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

I kinda wish I'd not adjusted confidence points

I’ve now won the last six in a row. Although I did start out pretty hot as well. It was the 0-4 December 30th that killed me.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

We all did pretty poorly that day

But if your confidence points were heavy on that day, that would be a problem.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

35 on SMU, 33 on Nebraska

I thought I was toast until I got home and saw everyone else did just as poorly. But the people who didn’t adjust confidence are racking up now.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Also

taka was 3-1 that day. 6 of his 11 losses were in the first 10 games, which means they were 10 or fewer confidence points.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

Really wishing the RTT pool weren't confidence based

Straight up, all I’d need to do is win 4 of the last 6. Possibly less, depending on which games they are.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

I also go down if all my picks work out

But if all my picks but Nevada work out, things are a lot different. Lots of people have 30+ on Nevada.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

If Zach is still floating around out there

You win if all your picks work out…not many people went with A&M and UK, so that pushes you over the top.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

INT return TD for OU

And that’s the game, as if it wasn’t already over

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 10:50 PM EST reply actions

The tackling is also pretty bad

The rest of UConn’s game has gotten to or above the level of Oklahoma’s. But the first player never makes the tackle, and the receivers are dropped easy passes.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

Woo! Just got back from the swimming pool.

Outdoor temperature: -7 F.
Outdoor pool temperature: ~90-95 F.
Outdoor hot tub temperature: 109 F.

Awesome

Oh, and happy that TCU won.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 11:21 PM EST reply actions

I assume you're still in Wyoming

Because it’s not that chilly in the East.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

Thermopolis, as featured in Bugs Bunny.

Lots of hot springs there, and they run swimming pools off of them.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

I went skiing a couple of years ago

And our cabin had a hot tub…it was pretty sweet to be in there with the temperature merely at 10 degrees.

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

It's the best.

Ended up missing half the Rose and most of the Fiesta, but time with family and all that.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

You missed the defenses actually learning to play

Plus Wisconsin’s coach making a dumb call on a two-point conversion/TCU stepping up.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

Your/your wife's family sounds pretty intense

You’ve missed so much sports in the last week!

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

You're in a PhD program

Why not make it a week in the summer? Bowl season, man.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

Heh.

That and we’ve always hooked up with family for Christmas. It’s a hard habit to break now.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 11:33 PM EST up reply actions

Because I've been interning in the summer.

Better pay, and my internships may end up getting me hired.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 11:32 PM EST up reply actions

Okay, fair enough

I forget that people who aren’t in the humanities have different schedules. lol

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

Truth

Get it during the Sugar and we’re talking. Assuming you’ll be back for the MNC

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 11:38 PM EST up reply actions

I fly back on the 5th.

And the Mrs. flies back about 10 days later, so I should be good. The only possible hitch is that I have presentations to give on the 10th. It’s the IAEA, so I’m hoping they don’t decide that the student should join them for dinner that night.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

Hopefully they're football fans

And if they go out for dinner, they do it at a place with an abundance of TVs.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 1, 2011 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

That'll look good.

Me staring at ’Merican football on TV in front of an international audience.

I really don’t think it’ll be a problem, but I don’t know yet.

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 11:48 PM EST up reply actions

My XBox 360 refuses to read discs anymore

So I figured it could use a cleaning of the reader. There are some thin, sharp metal pieces in there once you start taking things apart and one of them got my thumb. I think my tetanus is up to date…

by VolnVA on Jan 1, 2011 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

Bwahaha!

I got it open…but now I don’t know what to do…

by VolnVA on Jan 2, 2011 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

Apparently they specifically say don't do that

Though I didn’t read that until I’d already opened it up :P

by VolnVA on Jan 2, 2011 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know why

But something about messing with electronics just makes me feel extremely manly. Surge of testosterone!

by VolnVA on Jan 2, 2011 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

There is that.

Especially since so few people can do it. (Or believe that they can.)

by David Hooper on Jan 2, 2011 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

Ooh! Story!

(I’m replacing a heat sink next week, so this is relevant to my interests.)

by David Hooper on Jan 1, 2011 11:48 PM EST up reply actions

BTW, Hoop

Did you see the conversation about the bowl pick’em. Turns out all the current leaders are probably toast because so many people didn’t play with the confidence points and have their 29-35 point picks remaining.

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 2, 2011 12:10 AM EST reply actions

I hadn't caught that yet.

But wow. That means they missed all the madness of the early games.

by David Hooper on Jan 2, 2011 12:11 AM EST up reply actions

Yep, no big points lost on Nebraska, SMU, Hawaii. . .

Despite a 30 point lead, my only chance involves winning Arkansas and Stanford, strategically losing Nevada (7 confidence points, whereas most have 34 on them), and then losing exactly one of the remaining four games (I haven’t figured out which one it will take, because I would need to look at WAY too many things).

by Incipient_Senescence on Jan 2, 2011 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

I blame you

You’re from out West…seems like it somehow should come back to you.

by VolnVA on Jan 2, 2011 12:18 AM EST up reply actions

Well, I'm going to get ready for some sleep.

’Night all. Lady Vols game at 2 EST on Sunday (@LSU).

by VolnVA on Jan 2, 2011 12:45 AM EST up reply actions

Oh, perfect.

I would’ve been commenting, but:
- I was watching with a group and it would’ve been weird to be commenting when watching with them
- I didn’t sleep in 2011 until 2 AM today, so I have no clue if I’d have been coherent

Upshot being that I forgot the Ladies play in a few hours.
