Horrible
My youngest is her age, and I can’t imagine her having to make a phone call like that without getting all bleary-eyed and tingly in the face.

If the NCAA has any sense and sensibility, they'll throw their rulesbooks out the window on this one.
If KU boosters want to provide for them, let it be. I don’t care if he ends up driving a Mercedes and she wears a new pair of Uggs every week.
At the risk of sounding like an ass
I have to ask wheres his father? His other grand parents?
I agree horrible story, horrible situation. Hands down. No contest.
But are there other solutions before we involve an authority that sometimes has no business managing college athletics let alone the life decisions of a 9 year old girl?
Color me insensitive if you need too, as I know nothing about KU’s athletics (which is sad considering I’m an hours ride from there)
But I just can’t help but think “Nothing Good will come of this”

There may be other solutions, and several may involve the guy leaving basketball.
But knowing only what that article states, I do think that it’s of the utmost importance for the brother and sister to be together.

His dad bailed on him...
and he never knew his dad. Tyshawn tried to get in touch with him multiple time, but the guy just didn’t care. From what I can tell there are no grandparents.
never knew...
means the most contact he’d ever have was a phone call or a birthday card, and those went away pretty quickly.
And my hope is that the NCAA doesn't get involved at all.
Their best move is to send condolences and look the other way while those associated with Kansas figure out the right thing to do (and do it). It may be that Kansas basketball is the closest thing that either of them has to family now.

100% with you
on this.
I hope the guy doesn’t leave Basketball. May be the only big shot they (she and he) have.
But if the NCAA gets involved I don’t see good things for either of them. I think your solution is best. Out of sight, out of mind, and be professional about it.

I can't imagine the NCAA not giving an exemption.
Could you imagine the firestorm headed their way if they say that Kansas can’t help out?
Let’s let the distinguished Senator from Kansas address the panel…
Ok, about the NCAA’s tax-exempt status…

Would become a Lincoln-Douglas debate
On the Letter of the Law versus Spirit of the Law, and it wouldn’t be pretty.
Where’s Joel at, isn’t he the Lawyer? ;)
Seriously I hope the exemption is as far as they go. Otherwise it could spell the end of a decent college kids career so he can be a surrogate parent from what Caban described.

I'd say the loophole is to find someone in Kansas
who isn’t a booster to help them out. There will be those kinds of folks around because this story will likely elevate beyond sports.

i don't think it is too far fetched to believe that the father was not involved
the complete absence of any mention would lead me to believe that is the case
