Hey!
No mike for me tonight. In a coffee house and I don’t have the right headphones as it is. Listening, though.

I witnessed the unthinkable this afternoon. Something bad at Starbucks. You see “Salty Caramel Mocha” anywhere else and you go “ewwwww,” but there, you think, “It’s Starbucks.”
It sucked.

That's a pretty common S'bucks experience for me.
Of course, I go for plain black coffee, and they burnt it to ashes. So tifwiw.

Well at least it's cheap

No it's not.
Their coffee is the most expensive out there. And among the lowest in quality when they brew it. (It’s actually not bad coffee if you brew it yourself. Some things are too important to trust to the professionals.)

You mean $7.25 for a cup of salty caramel mocha is too much?
by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 25, 2011 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions
heh.
I wouldn’t know about that stuff. Just the plain black for me.
by David Hooper on Oct 25, 2011 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, but why buy that coffee if you're gonna do it yourself?
The beans are still shot.

I don't.
I’ve just tried home-brewed S’bucks before and it’s much improved. The problem is that Starbucks insists on using steam to brew coffee because it’s faster. It ends up breaking down chemicals and leaving things bitter. I suspect they also do that to encourage you to buy the syrups and such to mask the nastiness.

This game will hinge on one thing: can we cover Alshon?
If not, then it really doesn’t matter who we have at quarterback. Our team will deflate again.
Given sixty minutes to rotate coverage toward him, he can probably be limited.
The better question is what’s gonna happen on offense.

I think Waggner will do alright on him
just don’t let Teague near him. . . or anyone else.

Connor Shaw...
and his ability to limit interceptions will also be a big issue, he threw 2 against Mississippi State… but has generally be very accurate. He’s also average 61 positive yards in rushing against 36 negative yards per game.
Also note that no TB other than Lattimore had more than 13 carries through 7 games. And both the potential starters will be true freshmen… aka prone to mistakes.
This has serious potential to be one of those 16-13 type games unless Worley or Shaw just goes off.
Shaw is very accurate. Both INTs were off tipped balls, and one was at the end of the second half, when Shaw had to force the throw to see if we could make something happen before we ran out of time.

Missouri needs to hurry up and join the SEC this week
so they and A&M can do the S-E-C chant this weekend. ;-)
I want to see them win the game.
Balanced attack so SoCar can’t drop back into pass coverage all game long. If the running game works, lean on it.
Biggest knock on Shaw, if you guys are curious, is that he holds onto the ball too long. He's taken a few very unnecessary sacks, sometimes at very inopportune times.

I don't think it's that bad...
We were in Aaron Murray’s face most of the game, he just had an uncanny knack for getting rid of the ball at the last second. Also looked pretty good against Cincinnati.
If Kentucky and Mississippi State can get 3 sacks a piece, we should be able to get a few… and hopefully end some drives.
Oh, that's okay
We don’t bother to rush the QB.

Alshon is better than Justin in what Alshon is best at.
Justin’s a better jumper, but Alshon is certainly more physical.
Which matters more in their offense.
FWIW, the Spurrier offense has been neutered from what it was, but you can still do wonderful things with a matchup nightmare like him.

Poor guy has definitely been unlucky...
in regards to getting the type of QB he needs.
Can’t believe they didn’t offer Worley.

Same stuff we had to trust our coaching evals through. (And still have to trust them, honestly.)

Which I don't think we'll do this time around.
We’ll probably see 6 or 7 in the box a lot more often this weekend.
by David Hooper on Oct 25, 2011 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions
My concern here would be, can Shaw beat us with his legs?
by Will Shelton on Oct 25, 2011 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe.
But even if we do back out of the box, we’ll probably have guys ready to blitz.
by David Hooper on Oct 25, 2011 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions
My take on why Carolina didn't offer Worley...
Is that we’re looking for mobile QBs these days. The coaching staff chose to go after Tanner McEvoy, a QB more suited for the read-option approach we’re currently using.

Watch this
4th Quarter TOP through 6:48 left in the Bama game in 2001…
UT – 43 minutes
Opponents – 17 minutes
So I figured I'd just put this here
A woman comes into the store yesterday and gets upset that we don’t have much NFL stuff (we have some Titans and Colts jerseys, but that’s it). She says she figured that we sold NFL stuff because she saw our ad while watching an NFL game. I wish I would have asked her if she would have thought we sold rape kits if she saw the commercial during Law and Order. #tooslow

you should sell hockey sweaters

That reminds me
Another person suggested we carry soccer . . . jerseys? Is that what they call them? Anyway, he said kids go loco for them. As one of a handful of soccer experts ’round these parts, is he right?

"jerseys" or "shirts" (the full uniform is a "kit")
just speaking from what I’ve seen around campus at UNC, Erskine, and Brandeis, there’s a lot more soccer jerseys than any other sport I can think of. I feel like they’re simple enough that they can be worn in more settings than say. . . basketball jerseys, which can pretty much only be worn to games.
Go for USA, Brazil (spit), perhaps a handful of other well known countries (Germany, Spain, Italy, England, Argentina) and a few top European clubs, like Real Madrid, Barcalona, Manchester United (spit). . . . I would say Mexico, but I don’t know how big of a Hispanic population you have in Kingsport. Might be worth a look, but Americans who are just piggybacking on the favorites will all go Brazil or someone from Europe. Any Mexico fans you see are actually of Mexican descent.

I know
Go figure. It’s amazing, no exaggeration, how many advertising reps wander into a new retail business. For the first month, I’d say I had as many of them as I did customers. Short lessons: direct mail and captive audiences advertising at movie theaters sounds like a good idea but is REALLY expensive. I started getting really irritated at anyone coming in only interested in me being their customer and feigning interest in actually being one. I think I bought the Charter cable ad mostly because the guy was a customer first and ad rep second. But yeah, advertising works. The trick is figuring out whether you come out ahead or not.

Ad reps are scrambling for money just like everybody else right now.
Not really surprising to see them vulture over a new business, I suppose. And based on what I’ve seen from marketing and sales curricula in colleges, it’s also not really surprising that many of them don’t have a lot of situational awareness (i.e. “Hi-nice-store-I-like-your-stuff-you-want-to-buy-my-advertising-space?”). In the eyes of marketing, your store front is really their on-location store front.
