The season is in full swing with the biggest opening week matchup in women's basketball. Featuring two teams that want to press, keep the tempo high, and play at full speed, the game will likely be a wild affair in Knoxville. The game will also be a strong test for Tennessee's guards, as Miami features one of the best point guard / shooting guard combos in the nation. A roster breakdown and some quick comments follow after the jump.
| Position | Name | Experience | Height | PPG | RPG | APG | |
![]() |
PG | Ariel Massengale | Fr | 5-6 | 2.0 | 3.0 | 5.0 |
| C | Glory Johnson | Sr | 6-2 | 17.0 | 13.0 | 0.0 | |
| G | Meighan Simmons | So | 5-9 | 13.0 | 3.0 | 1.0 | |
| G-F | Shekinna Stricklen | Sr | 6-2 | 13.0 | 6.0 | 2.0 | |
| F | Taber Spani | Jr | 6-1 | 11.0 | 4.0 | 5.0 | |
![]() |
G | Riquna Williams | Sr | 5-7 | 16.0 | 1.0 | 1.0 |
| G | Stefanie Yderstrom | Jr | 5-8 | 12.0 | 0.0 | 1.0 | |
| F | Morgan Stroman | Jr | 6-1 | 12.0 | 7.0 | 0.0 | |
| F | Sylvia Bullock | Sr | 6-2 | 0.0 | 5.0 | 0.0 | |
| G | Shenise Johnson | Sr | 5-11 | 20.0 | 13.0 | 9.0 |
The obvious threat is revealed in the stats: preseason All-American Shenise Johnson very nearly opened up the season with a triple-double. A quadruple-double, actually, as the 8 steals do not show up in our preview table. She is the clear leader of this team and will be the toughest challenge for Tennessee. If either her scoring or her assists can be shut down, Tennessee will be in good standing to come out with a win. If she can post similar numbers to those she created against Texas-Pan American, it could be a long night for the home team.
Shenise's compadre in the backcourt is Riquna Williams, a member of the preseason Wooden Award watch list. Shutting down Miami not only involves shutting down Shenise, but Riquna as well. In previous years, Tennessee's larger, slower defenders would have struggled to keep up with these two. The speed is now present, but the experience a bit lacking as Ariel and Meighan will be assigned tough defensive duty against the pair.
The interior should be much friendlier to Tennessee, as Baugh, Stricklen, and Johnson will present matchup difficulties for the Lady Canes. Sharp play by Tennessee's forwards and posts can make life difficult for Miami, and if Tennessee can exploit their ability to run in transition, the opportunity is present to force Miami into foul trouble that could be key toward the end of the game.
Both teams love man coverage, full-court pressure, and transition basketball. Both will likely try to push the tempo faster and faster to see who can maintain composure and who will lose control, so the team that can dictate when tempo speeds up and slows down will be at a considerable advantage.
Prediction: 72-63 Tennessee

This worries me.
Do we have the defensive ability to stop Johnson? If we do, then I think we’re fine. If not, it might be a long and painful game. Fortunately, I think we manage well enough. 78-67, Tennessee.
Formerly 'snail. You get used to it after a while.
It's basically the same setup that killed us against Notre Dame in last year's tourney.
A solid all-around team that would make for about 20-25ish except for an absolute stud at PG. Ariel is already better at handling her than anything last year’s team could have done, but I have no idea if that’s enough.

Sports Animal this morning said that, at the Pepperdine game, there were photogs sent in from national media services that kept their cameras on Summitt all game long – never once watching the game. Evidently, there’s some sort of bounty for the first picture/video evidence of the dementia.

But three of their came on steals. They have 5 fouls to our two, which is an advantage I hope holds for a while.

Assumedly we'll be without Johnson at least until halftime.
If they can hold up, I’ll be optimistic.
Vols wiff on a rebound, leads to 2 quick points.
But Spani is on fire, and the lead is stretched to 8!

Among stat lines I didn't expect:
Rebounds: Miami 21, UT 10. (!!!!)
Turnovers: Miami 11, UT 5 (!!!!)
I kind of intrinsically knew that rebound line.
We’re getting killed on the glass.
But now, the good news: that doesn’t last for two halves.

To be fair, Miami is a very good and experienced team.
That our turnovers are so low is a great sign. We know the rebounding is an anomaly. We don’t quite yet know about the turnovers.
All right, so:
The good:
- apparently cooking has no correlation with Tennessee’s performance. Not good for the team, good for me.
- Massengale. Sheesh.
- Spani.
- Forcing turnovers.
The bad:
- boards. Sheeeeesh.
- Stricklen. 1-6 with the only shot being from downtown.
- The rotation. Only seven players in so far; there’s got to be more than that, right?
The regressions:
- rebounding and our three-point percentage.

Shenise Johnson with 9 points and 6 rebounds.
4 of those rebs are offensive (!), which also explains a few of the 9 points. She’s been decently contained except for that rebounding issue.
I'm almost sad we ended the half with the possession arrow.
We’ll get the opening tip and Miami will have the arrow. Shame we couldn’t get a tie-up in that last minute.

actually were playing a 4-4-2 today
and looked a thousand times better than we have in a 4-5-1. Altidore just can’t hold down the fort by himself up top.
But Holden, Torres, and Donovan were all unavailable today. If we get all our mids healthy at the same time, I don’t know what we do. Dempsey, Donovan, Holden, and Bradley are all the sorts of guys that are hard to sit, and Torres, Shea, and Johnson have shown a lot of ability to make contributions. Good problem to have. If only we had some strikers. And center backs.

Boo Florida.

That got out of hand there.
I feel better about our chances against Baylor and Stanford now. 16 points in a half against a good team isn’t a fluke at all.

Nope.
That was quite acceptable for the second game of the season. They have things to work on. I actually get nervous if a team is clicking out of the gate because it’s so hard to sustain that over several months.

Almost defined by who wasn't there.
No Simmons to start, no Stricklen for the first half or first big run, no Ariel to close it out. And it didn’t matter in the end.

Shenise Johnson:
17 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 turnovers.
Contained well enough. Not well, but well enough.
Did Massengale and Spani outplay her and Williams?
I kind of think it’s a draw at best. But that’s a good measuring stick.

41 for the Miami duo vs 38 for Spani and Simmons
Born in Fort Sanders - 1st Residence Aconda Court (Alumni Hall) - 1st games at Neyland 1947 - Mother = TORCHBEARER - Dad grad of UT & UT Law + professor BORN ORANGE and BLEED ORANGE .......
Let's do math!
Miami: 41 points, 13 boards (7 off), 9 assists, 3 steals, 17-47(!!!!!!) from the floor, 4-17 3-pt, 7 TO
Tennessee: 31 points, 9 boards (2 off), 12 assists, 2 steals, 10-25 from the floor, 6-12 3-pt, 7 TO
Looks like slightly worse, but don’t discount the points-per-shot. That’s awful for Miami – and most of that can be laid at Williams’ feet. But still, outplayed a bit.
