RTT Bowl Pick 'Em Reminder & Trends
Bowl season starts tomorrow, so today's your last chance to get in and get full points in the 2011 Rocky Top Talk Bowl group at Fun Office Pools. If you played last year you should've gotten an email back on or around December 5 with registration info, but either way you can also head on over to the Fun Office Pools website and search for "Rocky Top Talk 2011 Bowl" to find us. Same as the regular season, we're picking straight up with confidence points, which is even more of an adventure with 35 bowl games.
After the jump, the complete breakdown of how our community is leaning on all 35 bowl games...

- Alamo Bowl: 95% Baylor over Washington
- Insight Bowl: 98% Oklahoma over Iowa
- Armed Forces Bowl: 70% BYU over Tulsa

- Sugar Bowl: 72% Michigan over Virginia Tech
- Orange Bowl: 88% Clemson over West Virginia
- Cotton Bowl: 93% Arkansas over Kansas State
- BBVA Compass Bowl: 58% Pittsburgh over Southern Methodist
- GoDaddy.com Bowl: 56% Northern Illinois over Arkansas State
- BCS National Championship: 70% LSU over Alabama
- Average Confidence Points in the BCS Championship: 17.5 on LSU, 18.8 on Alabama
- Most Confident Pick, by far: Arkansas over Kansas State at 29.4 confidence points on average. Next closest favorite is Oklahoma over Iowa at 24.7 confidence points on average. Vegas has Oklahoma as the biggest bowl favorite at -15.5, but only three teams are favored by double digits (Boise State -13.5 over Arizona State, TCU - 11.5 over Louisiana Tech), which should make for a very competitive slate of games.
- An SEC team obviously has to lose in the title game, but our pickers like the league to win all of their other matchups except, of course, Vanderbilt against Cincinnati. Barely.
- People complain about bowls and such and what's become of tradition, but that's a nice little lineup in the traditional January 1 spot, being played on Monday, January 2 this year because of the NFL on New Year's Day.

Why yes, I am picking a 3-2 final score for Alabama-LSU.
I have no apologies over this.

I went 16-13 LSU
and really feel like that might be way high

Correction: 5-4 LSU.
I might be trolling hard in the paint.

21-13 Bama, its a high scoring affair...
Compared to the first game. ;)

I'd say 6-1
but that requires a touchdown
If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

That national championship game is one of the toughest to call in recent memory:
1. Can’t just auto-pick the SEC team.
2. LSU really has the national championship mojo to them this year. I mean, Les Miles didn’t lose two games with them. They have to win.
3. Can’t pick against Nick Saban in a rematch
4. There is an as of yet unresolved anomaly between #2 and #3.
If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

Part of me kind of wants Alabama to win.
Why? Because that’d be the most BCS thing to have the team that lost the original match win the rematch and get at worst a split title.

This suddenly has me waffling...
Changed from Ohio to Utah State(5 game win streak is hard to go against), and SDSU to ULL.
Still on the Pokes, but I genuinely believe they are a very underrated team.
and now...
the Rootability Index has me flip-flopping like Mitt Kerry. Taking a long look at Ohio again.
I am nervous about Temple.
Wyoming’s underrated, but their run defense is not a good match for Temple’s run offense. In other games, recent coaching changes are making them nearly impossible to predict. (As usual, I know.)

I don't know what to do in that one
Wyoming is underrated, there are matchup problem for the Pokes, there are elevation problems for the Owls.
I have under 10 points on all three games today, with 5 on Wyoming, 4 on USU, and 8 on SDSU.
Also, have 35 games makes for some really weird point assignments. Like 20 on the Zookers

I haven't really done much other than today's games.
I did put 10 on Temple in a “hate that run matchup but will feel good either way” kinda deal. But I always do terribly in bowl games because I don’t bother finding out the things that actually matter (e.g. who saw their coaches leave, who’s not really interested in the game, etc.). So I don’t worry about it too much.
But I currently have 25 on Illinois for one of the few non-today games I’ve moved. I nearly put 30+ on them because UCLA but then I remembered it’s like picking between Larry and Curly if they were in a lightsaber deathmatch. The only real casualties will be those who watch.

I had a couple other pick'ems that locked down today
so I made my picks. and let me tell you, I stayed up way later than I should’ve last night because FOP got glitchy and didn’t adjust the others when I changed a confidence number, so when I tried to submit, I got “you have two 25 point games, you have three 35 point games, you have four 31 point games. . . .” It’s very difficult to just glance through 35 numbers and see which ones aren’t used. and when you switch one of the 31s down, it moves all the others up, so you get three 32s. Eventually, I just had like six 35 point games.
If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

Heh.
Wonder if you had the wrong radio button for the list behavior. I had that once, and it had something to do with the logic rules on adjusting games around your changes.
by David Hooper on Dec 17, 2011 12:18 PM EST up reply actions
I checked, I didn't have the wrong button pressed
what happened is that I hit the scroll thing on the mouse with the wrong thing highlighted, and so it started going back to the previous page, and then hit the forward button and it reloaded, but it half saved my changes and half tried to go back to default settings

There's not a single game on New Year's Day?
Has that ever happened before? I know the NCAA (and their television overlords) bow before the NFL and kiss its ring, but I don’t remember there ever not being even one bowl game.

yeah, it happened at least one year
I remember missing Eli Manning’s bowl against Texas Tech (I think) because my college was apparently the only one in the country that started classes on Monday January 2nd. If January 1 is a Sunday, they clear it of bowl games. Sadly

2006 was the last year that started on a Sunday
When we also were not bowling…

that was my freshman year, and I remember not having to skip class to watch Tennessee
so this jibes with my memory

no bowl after 2005 season
by Will Shelton on Dec 17, 2011 6:00 PM EST up reply actions
yeah, I was agreeing
and a google search says that January 2nd, 2006 was indeed an outback bowl involving Texas Tech, but it was the low-scoring game against Alabama. I had been confusing it with Oklahoma State’s matchup with Eli Manning in what I think was 2003. But yeah, my freshman year, I was in class.
