Opening Day Bowl Games: Live Game Thread
They may not be the most interesting matchups to most people, but it's football, and we have only 35 of these things left to enjoy. So today's lineup has:
- Gildan New Mexico Bowl: Temple "@" Wyoming, 2 PM EST
- Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Ohio "@" Utah State, 5:30 PM EST
- R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl: San Diego State "@" UL-Lafayette, 9:30 PM EST
All of today's games are carried on ESPN. There is a programming note of interest to UT fans: the Lady Vols will take on UCLA at 5 PM EST today. It will not be televised and may have an online video feed, but there will be a live thread regardless. Not sure how we'll handle the intersection between it and the Potato Mash, but we'll survive somehow.

Looking to improve on my 43rd place finish in the regular season
I’ve got 7 on Ohio and 3 on the Cajuns today…and a whopping 10 on Wyoming. Nothing like starting off with matchups you really have no idea about.
I know how you feel
I’ve got 4 on USU, 5 on Wyoming, and a whole 8 on the Aztecs. I’ve seriously got no idea on today as a whole. But before the games start, I’m going to go get started on that New Mexico chili recipe that Cowboy Altitude posted. Maybe it’ll be ready for the 4th quarter or so
If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

How green chili recipes haven't gone nationwide is beyond me.
They’re so unbelievably good it’s almost criminal that nobody around here carries them. It was one of the worst culture shocks I experienced when I moved to the South.

well, this one that they linked has been a little weird in a couple places so far
two cloves of garlic is nowhere near a tablespoon’s worth, and they include chicken broth in the ingredients but not in the instructions. But I’m still getting going right now, about to cube and brown the pork. Guess I’ll let you know in the fourth quarter or so whether I agree on the awesome of green chili

Probably?
I’ve opted for the managerial style of fighting: summon atronarch, let my dog and hireling fight, loot when complete. Finally gives me skills to focus on, but big fights can last a while.

I don't get why people eat meat there.
“…so I can eat this vegetable stew and feel full and hearty for a week, or this horker meat and be hungry again in 25 minutes.”
Maybe meat is made entirely by the Skrim equivalent of Chinese buffet chefs.

Just a health restoration thing.
And a few of them give some really fancy effects, but for the most part… potions > food.

any of you guys taken up smithing?
just stumbled on an ebony mine… got 40 freaking ingots of the stuff now. Wondering if I should actually try and get smithing high enough to make a full suit.
Yeah, and I think I'm going to push for max smithing.
Not a great money-maker, but if you want to deal with the rare materials, it’s worth it. I’m tending toward making Elven stuff, but that’s because i haven’t gone through any Dwarven ruins yet.

Max Smithing is great.
Really, for that little “and can enhance them twice as much.” bit for the perks, not necessarily for the smithing itself, though Dragon armor is nifty. I think I turn a weapon from doing 36 damage to 72 damage with 1 ebony ingot.

it's health restoration...
mostly just for flavor since the food isn’t really that effective and potions are pretty easy to make.

How did the green chili recipe turn out?
by David Hooper on Dec 18, 2011 1:00 PM EST up reply actions
I overthickened (because I usually like thick chili)
and the consistency ended up a little off. But the taste was excellent. It was definitely as hot as the normal chili I make, but a very different kind of heat. Quite interesting. Also felt a tad less wintry, which means I now have something to go to when the weather gets warmer and I still want chili. And made an excellent chip dip, in addition to a supper. So overall I’d call it a win

I've found green chilis to be a much mellower type of heat.
They can be just as hot as reds, but I don’t now how else to describe the difference other than sharpness. But yes, they work great in warmer weather.
My favorite is to absolutely drown things like tamales or enchiladas in green chili. Then put some sour cream and whatever on top.
by David Hooper on Dec 18, 2011 1:28 PM EST up reply actions
it's a more subtle heat
you feel it in your belly more than on your tongue. Just as hot, but different not. Sharpness is perhaps a good word.

and you’ll just have to continue to take my word for it…
Personal greatest moment in picks: I went 23-2 picking bowls straight up in December 2000/January 2001. We used to run a very heated picks contest among my friends, and I came from way behind to win the whole thing on Oklahoma over Florida State. The only two I lost were us against Kansas State, and Eli against West Virginia in a crazy bowl that had like 90 total points scored. Nice to know you’ve set the bar for the rest of your picks life at age 19.

also, because the NBA rule is based on graduation of your high school class, 5* EE’s get at least 1.5 years. This would be a huge mid-season addition if we could get it (and that’s probably what gives us the edge over Memphis, who has a rotation that’s pretty well set)

skiing vs. snowboarding
Different learning curves.
Skiing is easier the first day, but much much harder to master.
Snowboarding is miserable the first day and maybe even the first two days, but then you pretty quickly get a hang of it.
The reason for the different learning curves is because snowboarding is a bit more unnatural at first (because your feet are constrained) but actually really simple (heel edge, toe edge…that’s it).
No homer.

The "I am the champion" song?
That was ’09.
I’m an early early (mixtape era) B.o.B. fan. And I remember being surprised to see him on an ESPN commercial when he still didn’t have an album out.
No homer.

I'm not really all that impressed by Smith as a passer
But I’ll be darned if he isn’t a really good running QB. Can’t believe he’s just a freshman, should be great in a year or two.

He has goofy throwing mechanics.
That’s also why most other teams passed up on him. But he’s been surprisingly good at picking up the offense.

soccer team I kinda support: 20th (out of 20)
two hockey teams I support: 13th and 15th in the East (out of 15)
Vol bball: lost six straight against D-I competition

I failed to notice...
both of these teams have checkerboard endzones. I knew Wyoming does(did?), but didn’t recall Temple having them.
Why in God's name are they singing It's a Small World?

So Utah State looks hideous on the blue turf...
although Ohio wouldn’t have been much better. Someone really needs to mandate a different primary color for uniforms played on colored turf.
and no...
I don’t believe colored turf should be banned, I actually think it’s pretty awesome for small programs to create their own brand.
Oh, this comment is going to tick Boise fans off.
Well played.

So Indiana State won in Memorial...
Getting Festus Ezeli back hasn’t seemed to make a huge difference after all.
and Memphis is 5-4...
Granted they’ve only lost to good teams, but then again they’ve lost to every good team they’ve played. If they don’t make the NCAA Tournament it will be an absolute disaster for their program.
they beat Tenne. . . wait. . . never mind

memphis vs. louisville
Glad to see them play. They hadn’t played in 6 years ever since Louisville jumped to the Big East. It’s too great of a rivalry to just let die. I hope they play it every year.
Similarly, I hope WVU and Pitt continue to play in football (they won’t).
And I think it’s a damn shame that WVU and Va. Tech don’t play anymore. I would love to see this get renewed. (ain’t happening).

Penn State’s starting QB got into a locker room fight with a teammate and had a seizure. That program is such a freaking mess right now.
Probably paraneoplastic syndrome
