The matchup of the night features the best running rivalry in women's college basketball, as Stanford hosts Tennessee for the 22nd consecutive year of regular season games. (Trivia: these teams have never had a running contract; they just keep calling each other up and making it work.)
| Position | Name | Experience | Height | PPG | RPG | APG | |
![]() |
G | Meighan Simmons | So | 5-10 | 10.1 | 2.9 | 1.8 |
| F | Glory Johnson | Sr | 6-2 | 13.2 | 8.6 | 1.2 | |
| C | Vicki Baugh | Sr | 6-4 | 9.5 | 6.8 | 2.0 | |
| G-F | Shekinna Stricklen | Sr | 6-2 | 16.2 | 7.9 | 1.6 | |
| F | Taber Spani | Jr | 6-1 | 12.2 | 3.6 | 2.1 | |
![]() |
F | Nnemkadi Ogwumike | Sr | 6-2 | 24.0 | 11.0 | 0.5 |
| F | Chiney Ogwumike | So | 6-3 | 14.9 | 10.6 | 1.1 | |
| G | Toni Kokenkis | So | 5-11 | 7.9 | 2.7 | 3.4 | |
| G | Lindy La Rocque | Sr | 5-8 | 5.7 | 1.2 | 3.3 | |
| F | Taylor Greenfield | Fr | 6-3 | 4.6 | 3.1 | 1.9 |
Just the condensed version: Stanford runs everything through the Sisters, to the tune of nearly half their scoring and rebounds. Outside the Ogwumikes, the team is still searching for go-to options on offense and on the boards, but those two will be quite the handful on their own as they'll be the most physical and talented interior duo that Tennessee has faced all year. If Baugh and Johnson don't have their heads on straight for this one, it'll be a long night.
The biggest question is how Tennessee's long road stretch affects them, if at all. This is the last and toughest game in a trek spanning both coasts and a stop in Knoxville barely long enough to refuel the plane. With the UCLA game still in the rear view mirror, this will be a great precursor to test Tennessee's playoff focus: come out sharp, and there's reason to believe, even with a loss. Come out sloppy, and we'll have to hope for a massive turnaround during conference play.
Prediction: 83 - 77 Tennessee (but it might take overtime)

My hope is that the refs will allow the game to flow inside.
That would mean good things for Glory and Baugh. The other potential good: Stricklen assuming control, and Simmons easing out.
But – and I feel kind of weird saying this – this game was made for Alicia Manning. The Ladies don’t win without her; she’ll get 25 minutes, and we’ll bear witness to a 76-71 win. Then again, the last time I called something like this I wasn’t even close. Erm.
Any luck finding a stream?

Yeah, I think it's doing some weird auto-effect.
I haven’t played around with the camera on this machine yet. One thing I don’t know how to get around: contrast issues when I point the laptop at the TV.

I put some of the postgame quotes in the recap post
but listening to the players after the game, I do really like the way it sounds like Cuonzo is handling them. Tatum immediately starts talking about how Cuonzo told him how much confidence he had in him this week, Cuonzo talks about Maymon becoming more of a leader and then Maymon says leaderish things in the postgame, etc. I like that.

That Ogwumike is just destroying everything in sight.
I’m just impressed at this point. Sometimes good players go nova.

This game has been way more fun than any LV game this year.
One of the best played that I’ve seen, too. Hoop, is this better or worse than the first half against Baylor?

I wish I knew.
It’s really hard to tell by the audio. The stats I most feared are not panning out: mostly the rebounds. Tennessee cannot hope to win a tournament when allowing this kind of rebounding, especially against a team like Stanford.

It's tough to tell how dominant Nog's been over audio.
She’s too athletic for Glory to handle. Read that again.

I know.
And without Baugh in for so much time, there just wasn’t any real help available. Baugh has some holes in her post game, but there’s nobody else ready to replace her yet.

That being said, the rest of Stanford has been nullified.
I won’t even be mad losing to this kind of performance.

That's basically how the game was expected to be played.
I didn’t have a good vibe about things before it started.

I'm not sure who else can slow her down, for whatever that's worth.
My comparison library of posts more athletic than Glory is very, very slim. I understand she’s playing out of her mind (35/20 wouldn’t even surprise me), but still.

So Jarnell Stokes is announcing Thursday?
he has to be the single most important basketball recruit we’ve had in decades. Sign him, and we might actually be pretty good after January and get some recruiting momentum… someone else signs him and we may end up with Auburn level talent in the near future.
Stokes could easily be the determinant in whether or not Cuonzo Martin has success at UT or gets run out of town in a few seasons. 6:30 PM ET Thursday.
or his committment could have absolutely zero effect...
due to any number of potential pitfalls, but I prefer my version of the story.
Who was that 5 star who we stole from Mississippi State that never played?
I think he's playing in Europe now

Even if they don't work him in in January
just landing him should make everyone feel really good about Cuonzo

6:30 PM CT, rather
I really hope we’re smart enough not to run Cuonzo out of town after a couple years with no talent if he gets momentum rolling in the 2013 or 2014 classes. But everybody would feel a lot better if we could land this one

watching his highlight videos...
man, he owns the paint. Puts nearly all of his shots off the glass too, which I love to see.
If his highlights paint an accurate picture of his skills, he could be a 20ppg guy.
you weren't kidding when you said he could be the most important recruit in decades
probably even more important than the one whose father we hired just to get him. of course, if he announces for somewhere else, we’ll all try to downplay this

(and rightfully so, as Cuonzo can still succeed without Stokes)
but this one would be HUUUUUUGE for perception. and he needs some positives right now, because we have way too many people who are more interested in getting Pearl back than wanting Cuonzo to succeed

Allan Houston...
important for all the wrong reasons.
How bad did Wade Houston have to be to tank with a guy who could go head to head with anyone in UT history except Bernard King.
Parrish just updated his story on Stokes
clarifying an NCAA rule that I’ve been wondering about for a long time.
If you’re not on an athletic scholarship, you can accept academic money, as long as it’s widely available for everyone (with uniform standards). BUT, if you’ve been on an official visit, you’re considered a recruited walk-on and are required to redshirt your first year.
Why is that important? Memphis has no scholarship available. Stokes redshirts if he goes there. Whereas Cuonzo Martin and Billy Donovan are promising immediately playing time

ESPN's box has Stanford attempting 21 more shots than the Lady Vols
Lady Vols 20 of 35, 57.1%
Stanford 26 of 56, 46.4%
Boards explain some of that.
Do fouls on shots count as shots taken?

Marshall just went for a 4th and 5 with 30 seconds left
threw a touchdown pass, lead 20-10. I had 30+ on that in FOP. And I’m 0-4. Oooooooouuuuuch

and that's one I changed at the last minute...
read too much into ULL’s performance and the Sun Belt improving.
Oops.
I was buying on the Sun Belt
and selling on Marshall after their last three games:
59-17 loss to Tulsa
23-22 win over Memphis
34-27 win over ECU (OT)

Tennessee is 13-19 on free throws.
Stanford, including that last one, is 6-6. Free throws are actually helping keep things close.
Has Manning been in this half until now?
she hits 9 points in the first playing a great game on D
and is a no show in the 2nd until now?

I really hate "blocking fouls"
in so many ways they’re almost always judgement calls.
I fear we don't have a final four team yet
the team has a lot of work to do as well as this coaching staff getting their act together

I tend to agree with you.
I’m not sure we learned too much tonight, though; we knew this team wasn’t going to make it without Ariel. Apparently All-American posts can dominate the Ladies, which we probably should’ve known.

I can't comment on this game,
but rebounding has been spotty all year long, and I know that’s something the coaches have been preaching. Some games, Tennessee gets it, but it’s usually when they already outclass their opponents in the interior. On equal footing, they suffer.
by David Hooper on Dec 20, 2011 11:51 PM EST up reply actions
Stanford exposed everything I most feared about Tennessee tonight:
+ Allows too many offensive boards to teams that are their equal in size (even factoring for Neka’s talent).
+ Quick fouls by Baugh screws up the interior rotation in the first half.
+ Meh free throw shooting percentages.
+ Deficiencies in ball control. Just enough to lag a good opponent.
It’s a ridiculously talented team and every team has their issues, but the problems they do have can be very big problems.
That last one can be solved by Ariel.
Physical posts can cause issues 1 and 2.

But Baugh plays too much like a guard.
Had she been healthy the last three years, it’d be a different story.
by David Hooper on Dec 20, 2011 11:51 PM EST up reply actions
Stanford has a higher FG% than Tennessee now.
Considering in the first half, it was about 60% – 40% for most of the half, that’s saying something.
All right, everyone.
Hit the showers, get a good night’s sleep, and we’ll figure out what the heck to do with this in the morning.
