Argh, we're playing at 5:15?

I was going to go to the lab tonight, but now I won’t be able to park in Neyland. :(

"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

Politics is easy.

A day or two before the primary, just interwebz the relevant candidates and pick one. A day or two before the general, do the same.

Otherwise, ignore.

by Caban on Dec 3, 2011 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

Seemingly good intentions, but inevitably bad results.

The premise: find students crazy enough about sports to be willing to pay extra for premium seats, t-shirts, and to yell like crazy.

The reality: a bunch of rich students who want front row seats and WOO JUMBOTRON!!! moments but have no real interest in losing their voices over it.

Over time, it degraded to a bunch of frat/sorority types who came late, left early, didn’t really cheer, and went only for the social setting and the taboo drinking. They were fans, but not the kind of fans that help. And their privileged status turned a lot of other students off.

All in all, a stadium cancer.

Oh, wow. That's a lot of applications.

I’m in Electrical Engineering, so I think it’s just kind of a different world.

It’s all about finding a program that does research in an area you’re interested in.

I had actually narrowed it down to UT and Vandy, but I formed a good relationship with the guy who is now my research advisor, so I pretty much knew that I was going to be accepted before I applied. The only question was funding, and he was able to work that out for me, too.

the humanities in general are just completely different

the job prospects are more limited (basically: academia), so people aren’t willing to go without funding. So every school worth its salt funds their students. Which means there are fewer spots available in each class.

There are probably 100 or so PhD granting institutions in America, so it’s not that hard to find 5-10 that do a lot of research in areas of interest and then another 5-10 safety schools. And that’s pretty much what you have to do, because nothing is guaranteed anywhere for anybody (whether or not you know your potential advisor—even if he fights for you, other profs are fighting for other students). I don’t know anyone who has applied in the last several years and not sent out 15+. It’s a crazy world

The funding situation sounds about the same.

I don’t work with any students who don’t have funding.

I also don’t know anyone that applied to 15+ schools, haha.

I’ve been told that UT only accepts about 10% of grad school applicants in the EECS department, so the key for me was making sure someone wanted me there, rather than just taking my chance at standing out among the crowd. Forming a relationship with my adviser seemed to do the trick.

It also helps that I’m a US citizen in a field that’s dominated by foreign applications. That’s important in some fields of research in Engineering.

I think science fields have a better shot at outside funding though

in the humanities, everyone’s funded by the department. that probably doesn’t help.

10% admission rate sounds pretty similar, at least for average schools. the top bunch are quite a bit lower. Cornell (who I grant isn’t exactly in the top bunch, but they actually released statistics, and the others don’t) said they had 300+ applicants for 4 spots last year

I’d say the large majority of our funding is outside research funding. I’m one of the very few people actually being funded by the school (I’m a TA), and I’m hoping to move to an RA position after this year.

all students are TAs

because all the money comes from the department. so class size is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay smaller than you’re going to get in the sciences. which is why an undergrad 4.0, an M.A. from the #2 M.A. program in the country, and a 1450 GRE (okay, so maybe that’s kinda low) yields a success rate of under 50%. like you said, a whole different world

That’s what makes engineering end up being so competitive and what keeps acceptance rates low. American citizens are actually probably in the minority.

Pay more to get the first few rows at football games, get special access, some free stuff from the university, in theory it sounded good. In reality, about 80% of those kids were the “show up halfway through the 1st quarter, leave halfway through the 3rd quarter, forget basketball exists” type.

My personal favorite story was when they held Orange Nation Appreciation Night at TBA before a basketball game; a fair chunk of students went for the free food and didn’t go to the game.

"Favre was seventh on the depth chart when he started"

I’m sure that’s the way the story goes when Favre tells it. Who are all these teams carrying seven QBs?

by Will Shelton on Dec 3, 2011 2:41 PM EST reply actions

He was the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th QB on the depth chart.

This is why it seemed like he unretired and retired so much. He was actually four different people.

Man, I hate obvious playcalling.

Wyoming put in the backup wildcat qb. All season long, the guy has kept the ball for all but one snap, where he handed off.

Two plays later, it’s 3rd and 7. Guess who ran the ball?

If the guy is a guaranteed one-play offense, just don’t bother with it. It’s not a change-up; it’s a surrender.

by David Hooper on Dec 3, 2011 2:45 PM EST reply actions

yep...

the Wildcat was intended to be high risk/high reward creative playcalling… unfortunately some coaches have co-opted it to be a super safe option instead. It’s hard to get excited over it when it’s the opposite of dynamic.

what are we lookin' at here

NC: Bama/LSU
Rose: Wisky/Oregon
Sugar: Stanford/?
Fiesta: Bedlam/?
Orange: WVU/VT

? possibilities are TCU (if in top 16), Bedlam loser, Michigan (if in top 16), and Boise. I think even if Houston won, Michigan might be selected over that lot

Michigan's likely in.

Crowds and money. The one complicating factor is if OU beats OSU.

by Chris Pendley on Dec 3, 2011 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

agree

if that happens and TCU finishes top 16, I think OSU and TCU might take those last two spots. if not, Michigan’s definitely in. Boise’s only chance is two of these three happening: TCU not top 16, Michigan not top 16, OSU beats OU. Which I think is unlikely

Southern Miss's two losses by nine points combined

One of them by six to a Marshall team they committed six turnovers against and one against a UAB squad where they played far below their level. USM easily could’ve been 12-0 this year, what a shame. Good to see them win a game like this though

UGA finished with more yards, more first downs, more passing yards...

…but got absolutely thrashed in the second half (and the second quarter, where neither team could move the ball). UGA certainly didn’t help itself (what with the dropped TDs and poor ST play) and being thin at RB made this game go from reasonably possible to all but hopeless, but LSU can ball. They scored 14 points on D and ST and had a punt returned to the 4. Even if UGA gets the 21 points it could have got, that only matches what LSU scored when it wasn’t on offense.

As a UGA fan, it’s one of those frustrating losses where I feel like we could have played a lot better, but I’ve no delusion about the necessary outcome. If we replayed that game 9 more times, the margin would probably be smaller in most of the rematches, but I doubt UGA wins more than 1.

that actually reminds me a bit of our game with LSU

they never scored directly from DST, but they had at least two scores set up by long returns of kicks or INTs. Then in the second half their running game just did what it wanted
