Clemson looks to have the advantage early...

was wondering how the relative layoffs would affect each team.

Also wondering how long until Clemson’s legs give out.

Kids from Butler, ODU

can drain the open 3 ball. Please, PLEASE could we get one of them to come to UT?

I really thought about calling them over Pitt

But then I would’ve had to take St. John’s or Florida to the Final Four. So I didn’t.

I was actually trying to post an apology of sorts to the Georgia guy

You know what a huge deal it would have been for me to apologize to a Georgia fan for anything. I guess you probably saved me from days of regret.

Also...

It was right after I posted my conspiracy theory; I really needed some feedback, man!

Welp...

Morehead State would annihilate my bracket… but Louisville would be embarrassed…

Go Morehead!

I have Ville as an Elite Eight sleeper

But if Knowles is injured, it probably isn’t happening. Still, I have trouble rooting against it.

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2011 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

This is why I have such trouble with sports betting...

or picks games… it can make the crap games exciting, but it just feels so much better to pull for the underdog all the time.

If my bracket works out, great… but I refuse to pull for it.

by Caban on Mar 17, 2011 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I had to look back at my bracket to remember who I even had in the final game.

I remembered Tennessee, but forgot the other team was Purdue. Kinda wish I had placed BYU instead, though. So yeah, I’m not taking my bracket seriously.

by David Hooper on Mar 17, 2011 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

WOW

Morehead might just ruin an Elite Eight pick of mine. Nice shot.

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2011 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

They also tried retracting afterward, for whatever that's worth.

I’m more inclined to believe they didn’t want to be controversial on air. Either way, it was a close call. I’m just surprised he guarded that closely at three-point range.

I just have to hope that somebody else upsets Kansas now

Some people are mentioning Lon Kruger as a prime candidate for the UT job (if it opens up). He can start impressing me by making the Sweet Sixteen and screwing up everybody else’s brackets.

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2011 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

please...

dear god no… his resume looks eerily like Buzz Peterson’s

by Caban on Mar 17, 2011 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

wait what?

I’m honestly very confused by that statement, unless you were being sarcastic. Did Buzz Peterson ever make a Final Four or have an NBA coaching job? Did he ever even make it past the first round of the NCAA tournament?

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2011 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Lon Kruger...

has had three bigtime coaching jobs, each of which peaked after two seasons and steadily went downhill… He’s won a single regular season conference title in 25 years.

The guy has had his chances, I don’t want a 56 year old SEC retread. Buzz was a horrible comparison, but christ… the guy got fired from Florida.

by Caban on Mar 17, 2011 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

and I was actually watching when he was at Florida...

that final four team of his had one opponent in the top half of the bracket to reach the final four… played a 14, an 11, and a 9. The one good win was over 2 seed UConn

by Caban on Mar 17, 2011 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

that's identical to what Bruce's path would've been

if Northern Iowa had beaten Michigan State. Oh, what could’ve been. . .

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2011 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

all that is fair

I was just really confused by the Buzz comparison. He does seem to have his wtf seasons at each stop. But I doubt we’d really go after him, so it was more just an aside to me pulling for him now.

Well, we can always start another Bruce Pearl drinking game.

One for every time they bring up the Pearl thing during the Tennessee/Michigan game. Double it if they ignore an important part of the game while talking about it.

I recommend getting a head start. That, or just play at the hospital so you can save the trip later.

these games are bringing out the best in the underdogs. their whole game revolves around the 3 game, we shut that down (or UM is just nervous, doesn’t really matter which) and we move on.

If I'm tied with a Calipari team and they have the ball with 35-ish seconds on the clock...

… I foul immediately. Cal’s teams can never hit free throws.I’d rather give myself a chance for the last shot instead of letting the clock run down and the game ending the way that one did.

Eh.

Much of Ivy League admissions is based on lineage. There’s a lot of good education to be had in those schools, but the actual value comes from (a) saying you graduated there and (b) the networking you can do with people who control businesses/wealth/politics/etc.

And Richmond immediately fouls Tinsley, who is a 65% shooter shooting 2 down 3 4.7 left. They went straight for the foul off of the miss; I like this: don’t give Jenkins a chance if you cn help it.

The good thing with our team...

we don’t have to practice missing free throws.

So...

Bruce should tell them to miss on purpose when we have a really important free throw?

On the offensive end, if you can pass well in the interior, you can force her into blocking fouls.

Low passes near her can get her off balance. Get one or two low passes in, then pull a Dunlap on the way to the rim.

Also, box out and jump HIGH for rebounds.

She likes to reach over, but she can do it without pushing. But if you can jump high enough, you can get your head up into her arms or her chin, and can either draw the foul or take away some of the aggressiveness.

But you absolutely have to jump for the rebounds.

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2011 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that one year vs. two years is likely moot.

At that point, nearly any coach in the country* would be fired and a new guy brought in. Might as well be arguing between 1 year and 30 years at that rate, so far as the school itself is concerned.

 * – We may be looking at the only case where a coach survives a year, but I’m not even sure that would happen given that he already served 8 games in the middle of conference play.

by David Hooper on Mar 17, 2011 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope so

If we’re looking at either one, I think a new hire is less risky than trying to ride it out, especially since I foresee greater recruiting problems when he would return.

ugh, see that's the line for me

“a minimum of” is less specific than I’d like – I’ve thought about this all day and I still think I’d eat a year for this guy, but anything more is no longer even remotely practical

Here's Ohio State's first five games for 2011:

Akron, Toledo, @ Miami(FL), Colorado, Michigan State.

One conference game and one road game in the mix. All in all, I think Ohio State can weather a 5-game suspension. And it certainly avoids the poor PR appearance of the players sitting 5 and the coach sitting 2.

8-8 the first day (down two Elite Eight picks) is looking like a serious possibility. Perhaps probability.

even before this group of four late games

there was no one in our 96 deep RTT pool who was undefeated, and only one at 11-1. Tough day for us all.

well, Morehead State was a bit crazy

But I have three Sweet Sixteen teams this evening, and they’re all down by double digits. That’s not good. Kinda thought Pitt’s region would be the mayhem region, but not so far. That goes to Kansas’ region.

until I turn it on

then they allow an oreb and commit a quick foul

Comments (and really, mindsets) like this are what'll get Stallings eventually:

“I don’t think Stallings should be fired but it is clear he is not the coach to get us there. He has taken the program a long way but I think it is as far as it is going to go with him at the helm. You never feel like his teams have the better chance later in the games. We are always just hanging on.”

It’s the “he doesn’t deserve to be fired, but we have no faith in him in March anymore” mindset – he’ll have to wait 365 days to earn real trust again. There are a bunch of comments like that on their postgame story.

they've been upset in the first round

In their last three tournaments, iirc (two as a 4 by a 13, one as a 5)

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 17, 2011 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Saw that.

If we are getting rid of Pearl, we may be ahead of them by about a year.

From a friend's Facebook page:
Exactly. Mark it down — I will NEVER pick them to win in the first round of the NCAA tournament. I’ll go one step further: if there is ever a day when, by some weird circumstance, they go undefeated in the SEC and HAPPEN to land a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament, I WILL pick Wofford or North Texas or whoever (as the 16 seed) to beat them. Book it. You’ll see the first #16 to beat a #1.

I have 6 hours to torture the one Vandy fan I know.

I plan on enjoying those 6 hours fully.

Formerly 'snail. You get used to it after a while.

That took way too long to foul.

They should have known to foul instantly if they missed and UCLA rebounded.

by David Hooper on Mar 17, 2011 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

Wow man

the looks on the UCLA faces are no bueno

by Will Shelton on Mar 17, 2011 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

Surprised those don't happen more often.

If the refs don’t call such fouls as intentional, why not do that and save the extra half second or so?

by David Hooper on Mar 17, 2011 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

letdown at the end

hole too deep, didn’t deserve to win anyway

by Will Shelton on Mar 17, 2011 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

Heh.

I’m not at all concerned about your pick or your choice to watch, but it’s fun to poke at you a bit.

I'll probably be working.

…and you can bet my thoughts will be with CBP and the boys on the court. I’ll sneak off to a sports bar if the opportunity presents itself. Could Mikie have cooked up this scenario to put them back into the early season mindset?

fortunately for me

Friday is my day off. But I weaseled my way out this evening anyways. I’ve already TA-ed this class before, I don’t have to show up to every single lecture, as long as I show my face occasionally and hold office hours.

So, after the first day

I’m 8-8, I’ve lost four Sweet Sixteen teams, and I’ve lost two Elite Eight teams.

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 18, 2011 12:14 AM EDT reply actions

I am

8-8, lost 2 S16s and no E8s. Better than my usual showing at this point.

by danmarcel on Mar 18, 2011 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

there are only two people below us in the RTT pool

and only one of those has fewer possible points than I do. Thank you, cody dalton, for also have St. John’s in the Elite Eight and for having Louisville in the Final Four.

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 18, 2011 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

yep

It’s over, Utah State. Sad to say, but your run is done.

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 18, 2011 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

So I called Southeast mayhem

I had the 12 and 13 seeds both winning in round one. Turns out, the 12 and 13 seeds both won in round one in the Southwest. Damn directions

by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 18, 2011 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm in the big 7 group. Had dropped as low as 30th or something.

Good news for me is that I’ve only missed two teams (L’ville and Belmont) that I had going to the sweet sixteen, and I had neither of them in the Elite Eight.
