Sweet Sixteen Schedule Day 1 Open Thread
We've had nearly a week to get all of THAT out of our system, so it should be safe to watch some basketball again. Here's the schedule for tonight:
| 7:15PM | CBS | San Diego St. Aztecs vs. Connecticut Huskies |
| 7:27PM | TBS | Florida Gators vs. BYU Cougars |
| 9:45PM | CBS | Duke Blue Devils vs. Arizona Wildcats |
| 9:57PM | TBS | Wisconsin Badgers vs. Butler Bulldogs |
As a reminder, here are the current standings in the 2011 RTT Bracket Challenge. You may be wondering whether I just copied the pythag bracket and claimed it as my own. I did consult with the pythag, but I broke with it starting tonight. The pythag likes BYU, but I picked Florida. Everything else is the same -- for tonight, anyway -- including the fact that neither has anything riding on Wisconsin-Butler because . . . Pitt.
Anyway, who do y'all like in tonight's games?

I like teams over players tonight
SDSU, Florida, and Duke to win. I also like Butler. I’m 80something in the RTT field, so you should listen to me.
Well, this is easy.
I have to pull for UConn, and I forgot to fix my other brackets so I suppose I care more about Arizona winning than Duke.
As for the other games? Whatever – I’m just glad they put the definition of tempo-free on at 9:57 so I can watch that and fall asleep immediately.
Formerly 'snail. You get used to it after a while.
Florida, I guess, and Butler.
Wisconsin’s game makes me want to drag fingernails over chalkboards to dull the pain.

happy 35th Peyton!
hey, it’s an open thread right?
Get 'em.

Music City Miracles Hall Of Fame, Class of 2010
I'm pulling for SDSU (big!), Butler, don't care, and depends on SDSU result
I have SDSU in the Elite Eight, and that wasn’t a popular pick. I have Duke in the Final Four, but so does most everyone who doesn’t have UConn. So if UConn loses, I might just root against Duke.
In my local pool, there’s someone with Florida, someone with BYU, and someone with Wisconsin in the Final Four. Hence, go Butler!

There's some joke involving Mormons and no defense

Besides, UF’s rolled 20 in 6.5 minutes. It’s justified. 20-13.

Well, UConn woke up.
10-0 run by UConn; they’re up 27-22.

10-0 run for UConn
This makes me unhappy. Also, I kinda want Kawhi resting from here on out. A third foul would be bad.

SDSU with a couple turnovers
and the UConn lead is 7

Oh wow, that came close.
Kemba Walker tid-e-bols it. 36-27 UConn at the half.
Formerly 'snail. You get used to it after a while.
UConn closes on a 19-5 run
fueled by good three point shooting and some offensive failures by SDSU. Huskies by 9 at the half.
Hopefully SDSU can put things together in the 2nd half.

and UConn wins by 7
I am sad, and so is my bracket.
Poetic justice that SDSU basically lost on Kawhi Leonard failing to get a rebound. Down one, UConn missed a shot, Leonard was in perfect position to grab it, a UConn guy outjumped him and kicked it out for a three. That was it. Sad face.

To be honest, I hate the impication that rules change in the final minute.
by David Hooper on Mar 24, 2011 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions
(That said, I didn’t see the call. Not commenting on it in particular, just the notion that whistles should be different late.)
by David Hooper on Mar 24, 2011 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions
that's why we just need a rule change
loose ball fouls are like offensive fouls. no free throws. solves everything.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 24, 2011 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions
I should agree with you
and the Pitt/Butler game does agree with you…I just like seeing it decided “on the floor”
by Will Shelton on Mar 24, 2011 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Me too. But if a guy commits a foul, that gives his team an undue advantage if the ref doesn't call it.
by David Hooper on Mar 24, 2011 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions
which is why we should just change the rule
this seems to me like the 10 second call that should be in college football.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 24, 2011 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh, I agree with you.
Loose ball fouls don’t deserve shots unless they’re intentional.

I'm so frustrated with MMOD
it works great until the last two minutes, and then it froze up. Has happened in both of tonight’s games and several games last week.

I would say it looks like Jimmer cut himself shaving
but let’s be honest, he doesn’t even look old enough to shave.
Florida was lucky to get that o-reb and secure overtime
when you put your season in the hands of a Kenny Boynton 3, you court failure.
FOULING WAS NOT A BAD STRATEGY
/capslock’d
Foul quickly, you (should) get the ball for the final shot. You’re now playing with 10 seconds to tie or to go ahead. That places the game in your hands. Not fouling means that your only hope is overtime. Both are acceptable strategies if played correctly.
Just don’t let 5 seconds run and then foul.
Many a rec league team has run that strategy and won with it
and since we’re talking about BYU, I’m surprised they actually trusted their defense
by Will Shelton on Mar 24, 2011 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Am I being paranoid
to worry about the future of our basketball program being decided by which one of the coaches we’re interested loses first?
I don't think that's the logic.
They probably have a 1-5 order regardless of when teams lose. If their #1 guy plays all the way to the end, they’ll wait for him.
by David Hooper on Mar 24, 2011 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Doesn't mean the order is any good.
That’s the way Hamilton operated in the past.
by David Hooper on Mar 24, 2011 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I think we might wait a week anyways
and go for Gregg Marshall. If we go for Mooney, I’m okay with that. If we somehow get Frank, that’s cool too, but he’s a long shot. But I think Marshall may be our best bet.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 24, 2011 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Message board chatter today is that Smart isn't interested
I think we’re going to do no worse than Rick Byrd, and we may do no worse than Marshall.
by Will Shelton on Mar 24, 2011 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Smart isn't interested
and that makes both sides. Byrd worries me a bit on the recruiting trail. I think we could’ve solved a lot of problems by just hiring Marshall instead of Peterson.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 24, 2011 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Why would Byrd move now?
I’m not convinced he’d want to do anything other than play the string out at a stable job.

He's been a Tennessee guy his whole life
The power of the T is strong with him.
by Will Shelton on Mar 24, 2011 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Very interesting
His entire coaching career has been in Tennessee. Maryville College, LMU, Bemont. Born in Knoxville.
UT grad
I don’t think he was successful enough six years ago for any interest to be mutual, but Belmont has really come alive in the A-Sun since then and now he’s legit.
by Will Shelton on Mar 24, 2011 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions
I didn't know about his Tennessee/Knoxville roots
but he was still one of the first people I thought of when it was clear we needed to start thinking about coaches.
On the subject of past searches
I didn’t realize this, but some folks at VN says Gregg Marshall has been a candidate for the UT job three searches in a row. Maybe he’ll finally win one

this is #3
We hired Buzz instead because the SoCon was a more respectable league than the Big South. Then we hired Pearl because the Horizon was a more respectable league than the Big South.
In the meantime, Marshall has moved to a more respectable league than the Big South.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 24, 2011 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Buzz is the most I've ever been wrong about a hire
That guy really felt right at the beginning, and his team lost so many last possession games the first year and then got jobbed by Jon Higgins and the selection committee his second year. I was so sure he was right around the corner from something big. But he never turned the corner, then went backwards in his last year.
by Will Shelton on Mar 24, 2011 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I seem to remember that myself
But we weren’t ever on TV at that point, so I was following based entirely on box scores. Also, I was in high school.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 24, 2011 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions
The best point I've seen was one made on VolQuest
that before Pearl, they consulted Ernie Grunfeld, who recommended Bill Self, then Jay Wright. But Self was at Oral Roberts and Wright at Hofstra, and they didn’t take either seriously and instead went with Jerry Green and Buzz Peterson.
I also don’t know how many current UT fans know that Kevin Stallings turned down the Tennessee job when O’Neill left, then took the Vanderbilt job the very next year.
by Will Shelton on Mar 24, 2011 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions
I've seen that too
And heard it attributed almost entirely to Doug Dickey.
by Incipient_Senescence on Mar 24, 2011 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions
also, he's not THAT old
55 is not crazy. and he’s a good enough coach. I think the only question mark is really recruiting energy/ability.

But I’m in a pretty small pool in my department in which I still have a chance (despite being dead last right now). Mostly because I’m the only one with Ohio State winning it all. If they keep winning and I’m within 32 points on April 4th, I still have a chance.

Anyone else
see UConn put the “punctuation point” at the end of their game?
A 40 point pace? Really Wisconsin?
At this point I’m inclined to believe they’ve lapsed into self parody.
You take it back!
They’ve scored 22 points in 16 minutes! That would’ve been a significant improvement for the dudes in orange last Friday.
And apparently, yes
As Butler hits 50 and the Bad-gers couldn’t hit a shot if they taped a TomTom to the ball.
Duke is getting smoked
Wisconsin, too…ok, who had Florida, Butler, Arizona, and UConn in the Elite 8?
This Derrick Williams fella
Can play. He has dropped 30 on the Dookies…he just had a sick dunk, too.
I had no teams from the SEC in the Sweet 16.
