RTT Podcast Tonight at 9:00 ET with Wes Rucker

Tonight's guest on the RTT Podcast is prodigious Twitterer Wes Rucker of 247 Sports. We'll talk with Wes about his article for Volunteers Kickoff on Tyler Bray and some of Tennessee's other famous sophomore QBs.

Hope to see you on the podcast tonight. Here's the pertinent info for that:

You can listen live by clicking the sometimes magic orange widget below. Or you can wait, download it later, and listen to it in your car on the way to work tomorrow.

Wait.

Wait wait wait. Joel, think about what you’re doing.

Wes Rucker, Will Shelton, and (presumably) Brad Shepard on the podcast all at the same time.

When exactly were you planning on ending the podcast? ;-)

I’m going to use TalkShoe’s new Self-Destruction On Schedule mode. It’s like the old self-destruction thing it used to always do, but now it’s programmable.

don't worry Hooper

it’s in the middle of the USA/Mexico game. Rucker will be sufficiently distracted.

define "save"

he can’t miraculously grow some new center backs. But I hope we can help develop some of the attackers and improve the youth system, which, if successful, will make a big difference down the road.

hence “process”

I believe the Marlins are in last place

Which is who the Braves are currently beating.

by VolnVA on Aug 10, 2011 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

a glance at the standings says this is true

but it wasn’t a few days ago.

The Marlins were my team, back when I cared about baseball. It got squeezed out by too many sports that could actually hold my interest over the length of a game.

I mean...we did our fair share of sucking last year

I guess that didn’t all get assigned to the freshmen, though.

by VolnVA on Aug 10, 2011 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

we did get out of our last world cup group

so I’m not sure about sucks

but we’re definitely worse than Mexico right now. still, that guy was well marked. Just a ridiculous shot from a terrible angle.

I mean...maybe we were due some luck

But the England tie was a gift and the Algeria win was something of a miracle. And then we lost to Ghana.

The results have just been frustrating of late. Couldn’t get out of the group in ‘06. Blew a 2-0 lead against Brazil in the Confederations Cup. Blew a 2-0 lead against Mexico in the Gold Cup. As a casual fan, it doesn’t fill me with lots of confidence.

by VolnVA on Aug 10, 2011 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

by that same token

we would’ve beaten Slovenia if not for an egregious call and we would’ve led Algeria all game if Dempsey’s goal hadn’t been called back for a BS offside call. I actually think our luck balanced out on the minus side last summer.

And yeah, Ghana is beatable, but let’s not act like they’re nobodies. They’ve advanced out of two straight world cup groups (and are the only African team to advance since 2002).

also, we’ve been beating Mexico regularly for 10 years. this year is a low ebb for us and a high one for them

I think what frustrates me the most

Is that it’s just painful to watch. Granted Spain has only recently started living up to expectations, but they just play such beautiful soccer. I ENJOY seeing a game.

by VolnVA on Aug 10, 2011 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

well, the second half was very different

we have potential. but like I said, this is a bit of a low ebb, in no small part because of injuries to key guys (Gooch, Holden)

I kind of feel like Wes is mixing up predicting what is probable (in a journalistic sense) with what is fair to expect

All other things being equal, 6-6 or 7-5 is perfectly reasonable to predict. But Tennessee needs and deserves superior coaching, and superior coaching should be able to jump the gap towards 8-4 or better. Should we panic if they don’t? No. But it’s also not insane, dude.

by _trey_ on Aug 10, 2011 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

I haven't listened yet

but “fair to expect” and “an attainable goal” are also different. I would put 8-4 more in the latter category

by _trey_ on Aug 10, 2011 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

he tries very hard to be a non-homer

I’ve always found it a kinda questionable trope. Makes ESPN almost worthless; picking with the spread ain’t interesting analysis, yall.

by _trey_ on Aug 10, 2011 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

well, if you're only a homer for one team

then you can be wildly optimistic about the other 119 or so. But I predict what I think will happen and don’t get too caught up in how it looks. if I’m consistently wrong in one direction (overrating one team), I’ll adjust.

I enjoyed whoever Darke had with him in the Women's World Cup (Foudy?)

Because you could tell how much she actually cared. Not sure how much Darke actually cares, he’s clearly not American, but that’s what made him so great – the call on that Donovan goal is one a lot of guys would’ve blown, but he walked such a fine line between making me think it was genuine enthusiasm while also saying coherent, memorable things.

they actually have a three man broadcast team right now

with Harkes, Darke, and Jorge somebody or other

I actually do like adding a national of the opposing team to the broadcast booth, because they have solid analysis that the US/ENG guys miss. there’s an especially good commentator from Trinidad who’s done this a couple times in qualifiers
