Janzen Jackson Speaks, Parries, Demands Interceptions
In today's Talking Points, Janzen Jackson speaks (but deflects on the details like a pro), John Adams applauds the attitude behind the o-line's unattainable goals, and the new guys get an opportunity to get into the mix.First up is GVX's summary of Jackson's comments:
In his first public comments since the Music City Bowl, Jackson declined on Monday to offer specifics about the personal problems that led to his withdrawal from UT in the spring and created lingering questions about his status with the team throughout the offseason. But while keeping most of the details about his absence private, Jackson did open up about his relationship with coach Derek Dooley and the difficulty on the road back to the Vols, also offering up his gratitude for the people who stood by him during the long process as well.
There's (a little) more in the video of the interview, which is posted by both VolQuest and Inside Tennessee. Toward the end, there's a great quote about what Jackson expects, nay, DEMANDS, from himself and the other DBs, but most of it dances around the absence issue. Jackson expertly parried on follow ups regarding the details saying only that the "personal" in the reason for his absence had to do both with him and his family. It's quite remarkable that, apparently, the media actually already knows the answers to these questions but is unwilling to report it until they can elicit permission from Jackson via a direct quote. Props to the Knoxville media folks for that. But be prepared for this (and left-hander James Stone snapping right handed, a story with surprising legs considering it is built on the mere anticipation of Something Bad Happening Eventually) to be the Bruce Pearl Timeline of the 2011 Tennessee Volunteers football season. Number 1 and 1A on every commentator's talking points list until something unspeakable (oh, the irony) happens to knock it off the radar. As a matter of fact, POLL!

John Adams: Bold offense better than old offense " GoVolsXtra
As silly as 2,000 yards [for Tauren Poole this season] might sound, the thinking behind it isn't. In fact, UT fans probably welcome it. Setting your sights high is certainly more embraceable than the mediocre marks the Vols have been posting. This is no time for discouraging bold goals. The team is a consensus pick to finish fourth in the SEC East. The defensive front seven doesn't rank that high. But the offense fosters fantasies — as well as fond memories.
Tennessee's first scrimmage is key for younger players " GoVolsXtra
"It has a big impact in who we start investing our time in personnel-wise," Vols coach Derek Dooley said after practice on Monday. "Who we can start shaping the plays around? It's not just one day, it's a body of work, I've said that since I've been here, but it does carry a little more weight and we certainly want our guys who have been productive in the past to play well. "We also need some of these young ones to go out there and say, 'Hey, coach me up. I'll be ready for the first game.' That's what we're hoping."
Juco transfers Byron Moore, Izauea Lanier using experience to their advantage " GoVolsXtra
That previous experience, though, paid dividends when Moore arrived on campus this summer, a time when star signees are typically "unrecruited" with intensive conditioning and weightlifting that put them in their place in a hurry. "They're going to tell you what you want to hear while you're getting recruited," said Moore, a four-star recruit who was also courted by Miami, Ohio State and Oregon State. "Once you get here, you're just part of the team, so it's time to go to work. "They're not telling you how good you are and stuff like that. It's over."

"We tried to say it didn't affect us, but it did," said former Vol Tobias Harris, who left Knoxville after one season for the NBA. "We weren't clicking as a team. We had a lot of egos and we weren't a family. We were just out there playing; we weren't together as a unit and that was hard. "Some of the guys got distracted because they were always talking about the investigation on TV instead of us. But I wouldn't say that's the whole reason why we didn't mesh together well."

OTHER
I wouldn’t say that this is irritating (maybe if you haven’t gotten over it yet), but I’d say the LSU and UNC games would be brought up a lot. At least for the first half of the year and again when LSU comes to Knoxville. My “other” choice would be the 75% stat: the composition of the Vols being freshmen or sophomores. Again, not that irritating, but something that the national media will harp on.
Good stuff, as always, guys!

Agreed
Our two losses after the “final” gun will be what the national media beats into the ground the most.
I doubt they will go too much into Jackson’s situation, other than mentioning in our first few games that he was absent from the team for a while. And I bet they stay far away from the Hood story.

I think there will be a lot of Fulmer-Kiffin-Dooley talk, which will obviously be super-annoying because we spent all last year talking about it. But I see that as the easiest ‘research’ a commentator could do.
And we all know commentators love their low-hanging fruit.
Currently involved in the relentless pursuit of just being competitive.
If Daniel Hood actually plays
it’ll really be interesting to see how the announcers choose to handle that situation. Not sure that’s something you can cover between plays or coming back from commercial – and Janzen may be the same way – but I’ve been impressed with the way the local media hasn’t gone back to Hood’s story, to this point, while he’s moved up the depth chart. There’s really no way to spin that story in a positive light, but I also think it’s something national announcers will have a hard time staying away from.
sure there is
the ol’ story of redemption. guy does something really bad as a 13-year old, turns his life around, has one brave school willing to take a chance on him (despite everyone outside the situation assuming he’ll step out of line and get kicked out), he not only doesn’t put a foot out of line but manages to change positions and get lots of playing time

Nah
I bet they don’t touch it. How often do you hear about juvenile criminal records during college football broadcasts?
Even though the horrific details of the Hood case managed to slip out via a publicly-published appellate opinion, I can’t imagine any TV program directors will want their broadcast booth talking about a young girl being duct-taped and raped with a foreign object, regardless of how minimal Hood claimed his role in it was.
I bet they stay far away from it.

so basically
stories of redemption are only okay when the thing you’re being redeemed from isn’t uncomfortable

I'm just saying...
Sports broadcasters don’t like to get into stuff like that. They may mention that he had “some trouble” as a youth and leave it at that, but I doubt they will carp on it because they won’t want to get into the details. Plus it was a pretty long time ago and his “redemption” had pretty much already happened by the time he got to UT.
I’m not saying they won’t mention his story at all, just that it won’t be something that gets done to death to the point that it is irritating to Vol fans.

Should've elaborated
to say that there’s really no way that a television network is going to try to spin that story into a positive light.

Agree with Ecuamerican's "Others" but
the Daniel Hood thing is what I worry about. Same as back when Kiffin gave him a scholarship, all anyone outside of the UT fanbase is going to hear (and believe) is, “UT gave a scholarship to a rapist.” I think if he just plays, not much if anything will be said. If he excels, that’s when the mud will start to be slung.

Subject matter of course, but more than that I think the story is too cold.

The Bruce Pearl Timeline
I envision sitting around with my great-grandkids on my lap watching Peyton Manning III playing QB and seeing the Bruce Pearl Timeline pop up. It’s something that will be passed on from generation to generation.

Hello ladies. Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. Sadly, he isn't me.
The "Dooley Rule" will be brought up incessantly.
Giving us all the chance to relive painful memories. The night of the UNC game, my wife and I had to attend a function and a friend of mine watched the game and texted me updates. He is a die-hard LSU fan, but he’s nonetheless a very nice guy. I remember getting this series of texts:
“UT won. Game over.”
“Wait. UT didn’t win. WTF?”
“Oh, dude.”
(Me) “WHAT???”
“It happened again.”
(Me)“What happened again?”
“You won, but the refs just said the game isn’t over.”
(Me)“You better be kidding me.”
“OT”
(Me)“No offense. But don’t text me anymore. I can’t take it.”
“I understand.”

How come the NCAA never gets punished for lying to everyone about being fair and just and not about money?
I'm a brony and proud of it.
Buying out the North Carolina game
will come up more than once, I think. Really, there’s quite a lot of off the field to talk about with this team still. There should be no wasted moments for commentators.
Agreed with everybody above

I agree with the "Derek Dooley Rule"
Yes, the Dooley rule, from the man who is a self-proclaimed 8-7 in post-game handshakes. It could get continued mention after every game that is close and has some kind of penalty like that at the end. I could see some set of officials in a close game calling a penalty against UT to lose a game (or us being the first to lose a game on this rule), though I desperately hope the football gods have kicked us enough while we were down. A strong part of me just wanted to say the Bruce Pearl timeline because ESPN still dislikes UT for some reason. That stuff will certainly get play when the NCAA sanctions finally are announced for UT.
On another note
In reference to Dooley, I’d liked to give kudos to kingofzachland for his Dooleyisms 2.0. They’re getting numerous and good enough to warrant their own blog or a special place here at RTT. It could be a constantly growing list. Will/Joel/Brad, an idea for y’all in a few years (when he have even more quotes) would be a top 10 (or 20, 25, or 50, whatever) Dooley quotes or a Dooleyism tournament where the RTT readers pick their favorite Dooleyism. I’d enjoy it as we the fans discuss whether we like shower discipline, handshakes, or “Where’s Rommel?”.
I still remember that first press conference after the introduction
“Hey, Derek, I’m coming to up to Knoxville” “Alright, see ya.” Boom.
And the WR going up one-handed and eating peanuts off the DB’s helmet.

In the non-humor division
It’s going to take something pretty strong to top what has been my favorite of all his quotes since the day he said it:
“I make mistakes all the time, but if it’s not fourth-and-1 every day when you come to work, then you’re not doing your job right. That’s how I feel — fourth-and-1 for the national championship every day. That’s how it’s got to be.”

Dooley is now the most Quotable Coach at UT
Which reminds me… can we add that feature again?
I’d suggest a Quote of the Week; a Best of the Season; and an All-Time, Hall of Fame section with the best ever Dooley quotes.
So we start using the “turn it green” Rec function – let that be the guide? Surely someone has a better solution…
