Non Tennessee Football Games Open Thread
Yeah, we had Thursday. And Friday this week. But it's not really gameday until Saturday. Consider this your open thread for ESPN College Gameday and for the games not involving Tennessee, for which we'll have a separate thread all dedicated and proper like UT game threads should be.
Here's the rest of the day's schedule, through orange-hued spectacles:
| COLLEGE FOOTBALL TV SCHEDULE FOR UT FANS | ||
| Kent State at Alabama | 12:21 | SECN |
| Minnesota at USC | 3:30 | ABC/ESPN2 |
| Montana at Tennessee | 6:00 |
PPV/ESPNGP/ESPN3 |
| Boise State vs. Georgia (Atlanta) | 8:00 | ESPN |
| LSU vs. Oregon (Arlington, TX) | 8:00 | ABC |
Who are you rooting for in these games and why? Are you watching any other games instead? How come? Have you entered your guesses in the RTT Guessing Game? Why not?

…with no more “Rocky Top Tennesseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”. Without us in it, it’s like I can finally hear how truly atrocious Big & Rich are.
I would just cringe at that part.
Fortunately, they’re not coming to my ci-tay anytime soon.

In this story
from KNS today about new ticket scanners and concerns at Neyland Stadium, Chris Fuller says they didn’t want to “devalue the product” by slashing ticket prices today ($40) to try and get a full house.
Uh, I’m pretty sure the product has devalued itself over the last three years.
But not for long.
The UTAD and KNS will spin the empty seats
They’ll blame it on the heat/economy/new-fangled TVs, just like they blamed the empty arena for 9pm weeknight tip-offs on the “threat of snow” but we all know that if we get back to winning 10+ games per year, they can name their price and sell out games.

To Strive, To Seek, To Find, and Not to Yield.
So, food for thought:
I don’t think last night was a fluke for either team (a lot of times, the opening season surprise salvo normally means both teams are playing about like they would). Credit to Baylor for diverting from their normal short-passing spread game to an offense I’ll describe as “wait a second, we have Robert Griffin as our QB”. I think Baylor may be a fringe top-25 team, but I’d be surprised if TCU is heard from the rest of the season. Last night meant more to destroy them than it did for Baylor.

That game was the exact opposite of Kentucky-WKU.

I'm gonna go ahead and say
TCU is a good team by the end of the season. When you’re breaking in a ton of new starters, that’s how it goes. But they have a very good chance of losing next Saturday in Colorado Springs. And I’m not sure they’ll be good enough by November 12th to win in Boise.
If you mean “heard from in the rankings,” I agree. They don’t really have opportunities for big wins on the schedule.

Playing out the "this wasn't a fluke" card.
If TCU will be good, then Baylor should be good, too. Absent Oklahoma, TAMU and OSU are the next best teams in the Big XII (and both have question marks), and TCU is likely equivalent to a top-half Big XII team. That should put Baylor up in that conversation, I think – but they get both TAMU and OSU on the road, so it may be a non-issue.
Maybe 4th makes more sense?
Formerly 'snail. You get used to it after a while.
by Chris Pendley on Sep 3, 2011 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions
no, no, you're conflating "will be good" with "is good."
Baylor is better than TCU right now. TCU will pass them late in the season (although they won’t get a chance to show it). I think Air Force is better than TCU right now as well, but TCU will be better by the end of the season.
I’m still not convinced Baylor is better than 6th, but they’ll have a puncher’s chance against Texas and Missouri. Actually, I think they have a good shot at pretty much everybody but Oklahoma. OSU lost their brilliant OC, and A&M can always lose with Sherman at the helm.

It's an intentional conflation, though.
A couple years ago, I went back to go over all the early-season upsets to see if they were really upsets in retrospect; most of the game made sense (except for FSU-BYU, so it was that season). I’m just trying to play out that scenario and figure out what it means.
In short, I’m waiting on the games to kick off. ;-)

heh
can’t really argue with that. but there are always a few games where you look back and say “it’d be different if they played again at the end of the season.” usually, those involve a team undergoing a lot of transition, which includes TCU this year (and Auburn, which may be a much tougher test for Alabama than for Clemson). actually, last year’s Tennessee/Florida game might fit that description.

It'll be the first legitimate defense Bray has faced in college.
I give Muschamp a lot of credit (similar to how I appreciate Chavis for what he does, except moreso). Chaney’s offense is effective, but it’s not particularly new – or at least the core of it isn’t. Plus, it’s not like Muschamp didn’t face a ton of spread offenses at Texas. It just feels like a preparation nightmare; Bray’s first truly hard road game against the toughest defense he’ll face so far.
On the other side of the ball, I don’t know the first thing with respect to what Weis is going to do, so I’ll reserve judgment there.

I just don’t see Florida having a position of strength at this point. They’re replacing near the whole offensive line, and they don’t have any defensive position groups that are both experienced and talented. I’m just not sure what they do well that will give us trouble.

There’s a school of thought out there than sweating clears toxins and should be encouraged. That said, it’s the sponsorship dollars and somebody is paying them enough to make the sweat worthwhile. If it’s affecting their thinking, then that’s an issue between them, Auburn, and the sponsor.
But if you paid me enough I’d be in a jacket out there too. Especially with all that water and Gatorade on the sideline.
And towels to cool you off.

I see that trollgaze from here, WWL.

USU is 9-15 on third down.
How do I third down defense?

I have multiple Auburn fan friends
It’s taken all of my self-control not to text them and ask what is up with their team. The FB rants tonight should be epic, win or lose.
I've often wondered about faking in that situation.
It’s awfully hard to believe that a fake is possible immediately after conceding 5 yards.
Clearly hits the ground....

Yeah, they'll be forced to onsides
Despite what Denarius Moore might tell you, those almost never work

Battle Hymn of the Republic?
I wonder if Auburn plays that when they play Georgia.
Bring it back???

Shame, too.
That was beautiful.

An optimist sees the glass as half full. A pessimist sees it as half empty.
And the engineer thinks the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
Nice....never heard that one.

Too much parity in NCAA
Get rid of the salary cap! Especially at The U.

Wrong on NW
Wrong on TCU, probably wrong on Purdue, almost wrong on Auburn…my picks apparently are not any better in DC than they were in Richmond.
Wow.
Hard not to feel bad for those Utah State kids- they played their hearts out.
And that voluntary penalty/fake FG voodoo jedi trickeration was frickin awesome.
Go frickin' Gophers!!!

Here in Texas it's part of an either or package,
ESPN2 or ABC.

Not sure. May have something to do with potential bandwidth.

if there was any doubt
Regarding Auburn leaving blood in the water for the SEC…..Utah St just proved it. Kudos to those guy for putting on a heckuva show, loss or not. They wanted that game!

Oh, snap!
I still dislike Notre Dame for no particular reason…and they just pulled a Jabari Davis against UGA ’03.
Houston looking good against UCLA.

QB draw...on second and long?

USF is making things rough on ND early.
10-0 and a very nice punt return puts them near ND’s 40 to start their next drive.
Skip Holtz doing the family bidness well.

USF-Notre Dame...
is pretty good so far.
USC-Minny is close but the Gophers can barely snap the ball before the QB gets hit.
WMU is looking like they might just beat Michigan.
I'm kinda thinking Michigan - Notre Dame - USC is the best order of those three.
Might fit the Houston game in there, probably up with Michigan at the moment.
Well
I had the USC game but apparently the satellite feed is having issues. Grrrrr

Ugh..my alma mater not faring well so far..
Clemson only up on Troy 13 – 9 and it’s almost halftime…their offense has looked horrible..
Man, that looked like us last year.
Fair catch with nobody too close. Bounced off the hands. Lucky the USF guy didn’t have his balance; he has clear space to the end zone.
Very true...
Troy is one of those small schools that has a tendency to look good against the big boys
Nice muffed punt by the Irish!!
Any engineers out there - ATT Uverse
Why is it so incredibly difficult to allow recoding of programs for the actual length of the football game?
I understand they use the timer but we don’t have the sophistication to go by the length of the game feed? Really?
Third football game since converting that ended in the 4th qtr, before the action did.
Premature eradication?

Hey, bad guys. Look up in the sky. See the UAV? Nope? We see you. "Don't laze me, bro'!"
I'm guessing that the coders who set it up were thinking of timed events like regular shows
and didn’t put in the logic for on-the-fly adjustments. Add in a kludge here and there, and it’s probably more of a mess than they let on.
a long time ago
When I had the misfortunate of working for AT&T…I would tell folks to set your timer for 15 minutes before and after your event….or more.
U verse is horrific on timing.
