we knew about most of those, didn't we?

If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

I was only aware of Milton

But not surprised by Jeffrey and Nance. I thought Martaze was still considered a prospect with potential, but actually had heard nothing about him for a long time.

injuries:

*Brewer needs eight weeks, off his crutches, out for spring
*Bullard is full go (meniscus)
*Carson got scoped, he’s on crutches for a week, full go for spring
*Hunter is doing well, he’s running, he’s on track
*Greg King had a meniscus, he’s full go
*Lane is full go
*Da’Rick gets pins out in 4 weeks, he can’t catch for a couple months, full go for spring
*Marlon Walls got scoped, he’s full go
*Daniel Hood, Curt Maggitt, Prentiss all had shoulder surgeries, all in slings, all non-contact for spring (so Hood is pretty much out, Prentiss can do a lot)
*Lathers is full go

If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

Not that the poor mouthing of the roster wasn’t warranted…just was worried it might be Dooley’s default style.

by VolBrian on Jan 13, 2012 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

I've heard from a couple different places

that we had some people who were borderline on passing their six hours in the fall (which means they’d have missed a bowl game if we had one and that they’d be suspended for four games next year). If those had been true, you’d think this would’ve been the press conference where it came to light. And all he said was that Schofield was not currently with the team because he was working on improving his grades.

Yeah

But, they don’t even have to do that.

Even if you are inclined to try and graduate and do well academically, you could still take two easy classes in the Fall and then roll with 15 hours or even 18 if you’re really serious in the Spring.

Hell, I had 21 hours two semesters and still worked nearly full time. Maybe we need a time management coaching position.

trying to watch plays to see what we do

evaluating guys comes in person. trying to see right now what they were thinking, what they were coached to do

Gotta admit

I do enjoy seeing Jay Graham up at that microphone. It warms the heart to see the UT alum back at home. Weeks later, I still think it’s a great hire.

Hill has a lot of speed

but he didn’t realize how big he was, to have that kind of speed and change of direction. we’ll see when we get him in pads

that's a wrap

unsurprisingly, we do not see Pittman or Sunseri in person here

Hey y'all

With the inclusion of Graham and Pittman (provided we keep the coaching continuity), do you see UT going into and getting more players out of NC and SC? Being in NC myself, there are a number of good recruits to be had in this state.

by VolfromBYU on Jan 13, 2012 4:10 PM EST reply actions

you'd imagine so

Dooley said it’s been an area of focus and we haven’t done as well as we could’ve. two recruiters in the area can’t hurt

I think Pittman will

hit FL harder than NC. As well he should.

as long as

we can keep up that valuable GA pipeline. I’d love to see more from the Carolinas, I walways felt as though TN could get more players from there than they do. That’s part of why I leaned towards Shannon for DC, hoping his connections to Florida could help us in recruiting.

by VolfromBYU on Jan 13, 2012 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

I think the Carolina's and Georgia are more logical emphasis than Florida

due mostly to distance and also the competition from a bunch of great in state schools makes Florida a tough place for large sustained success. Having said that, we should be a good choice for those kids who do want to get out of the state. Tennessee can be a good school for those kids as it is a roster made up of mostly out of state kids so we don’t have the instate cliques like schools with a strong in state base.

Even after the in state schools

get all their guys there is still a wealth of talent left that is greater than NC. SC and GA are strong.

I think this a bit of an overstatement

There’s a metric [fulmerized]-ton of talent in Florida, no doubt, but we’re also a lot closer to NC and I think might have a lot more natural pull there. NC produces something like 40 BCS signees every year, and the NFL is stacked with ACC guys. See: http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1239398
And keep in mind in FL you’re recruiting against a whole mess of legitimate in-state programs- UF, FSU, UM, UCF, USF, FIU, blahblahblahblah. Not saying we should give up on Florida, obviously, just that NC ain’t anything to sneeze at.

by _trey_ on Jan 13, 2012 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

I know the ACC has

tons of NFL level talent. Second to only the SEC by the tiniest of margins. I think its literally like SEC 267 drafted vs ACC 250 over the last 7 years with the ACC and the ACC was tops in last year’s draft.. Maybe I overstated and NC should be attacked harder by UT but I feel like their chances are greater at landing impact players from GA, FL, or SC over NC. There are a lot of schools that go after the NC guys too and there arent as many guys to get. I guess in my mind I still think TN should feel confident in their ability to beat out any school in FL outside the big 3. I do however agree completely that kids still like to stay home or at least close to it so NC would be great in that regard.

Wasn't saying NC over SC and GA

But just not the full court on FL like Kiffin tried to do and yea probably at least as much or more emphasis on NC vs. FL with heavy emphasis on GA and SC.

Pittman was hired by and recruited next to

Butch Davis. Pittman will help you in FL.

Dooley did mention

that he made call after call trying to find negatives for Pittman and couldn’t find one

In terms of coaches so far

I love Graham, great hire. I do think Pittman is an upgrade over Hiestand, though I know coach and offensive coordinator dictate scheme. I just pray those two (w/ Dooley and Chaney) can get us a running game. I’m a bit skeptical but willing to see how Sunseri does as the DC, he does sound like a good recruiter. I do wonder about Coach Thompson and how he feels about promoting Bama’s LB coach to our DC and not potentially him. I certainly hope Thompson stays around, he seems to be a good coach, esp. now that we have some more people to work with on the DL (Sentimore and McCullers).

Thanks for the excellent updating, guys.

I couldn’t watch it live. Much appreciated.
