Look at Alabama last year…sucked in the non-conference, went 12-4 in the SEC, didn’t get in.
I like Tennessee and Vanderbilt. There aren't many like me, and they're probably better off for it.

Valdes, Casillas clearly better. I kinda think Neuer is. Hart, Julio Cesar, Cech, and probably a few others are a tick above him.

There's been some talk of that, but it's not quite as common in soccer.
The other problem: there’s very little you can do to change the game to fix that. Most sides don’t use aerial-only attacks (put your hand down, Stoke), so it’s not as big a deal as it could be.

You don’t have to worry about rim outs on super precise or way off shots.
But the ones that do rim out just reek of bad luck to me. Of course, I’m making that observation through Vol-colored glasses. I’m happy to admit that.

Getting Stokes was huge
And I really think it’s the improvement. The defense has gotten better, and spare the egg they laid in Memphis, the team has played better game-in game-out since that long losing streak.

I still have no idea what’s reasonable to expect from here on out.
Before our trip to Rupp, we play three SEC games: @Georgia, @Vandy, vs Auburn.
I don’t think we can win all three. But if we go 2-1, I’ll feel like we’re still in it for the 9-7 required to make the NIT (which is still a long shot). 1-2 or 0-3, and I might remain positive on Cuonzo (he’s starting to recruit well, and the improvement we’ve shown, as you point out, sends a message), but this season will be a complete lost cause.

It'll be interesting to see the team's mindset
UGA and Auburn won’t be as challenging as the last 3, but those are the kind of games we’ll absolutely have to win to have a chance at the postseason.

I haven’t seen a UT coach that was very successful that didn’t have immediate success so all my comparisons are pretty much negative ones. But possibly not valid ones, either.

Bruce’s first team was theoretically less talented than this one, and with Buzz Peterson’s results being the only thing to go by… they certainly hadn’t exceeded expectations yet.
but recruiting numbers vs actual ability is a big gulf
we had an NBA player and one of the best three-point shooters of all time on that team. And they weren’t inexperienced freshmen either.
in general, taking guys who couldn’t produce under a bad coach is better than taking guys who couldn’t produce under a good coach

I was cautiously optimistic when we hired him
just after seeing him go from 3-15 to 15-3 in a couple years at Missouri State. Got more optimistic when we had all the Purdue guys talking about how well he recruited as an assistant there. Got less optimistic when we started signing a bunch of MVC-caliber players.
Now very optimistic

Florida vs. Kentucky
During the Florida game, there came a point — and this was actually relatively early in the contest, and well before the game was “over” for practical purposes (check game thread for confirmation) — when I had no doubt in my mind that we were going to win the game.
At no point during this game did I believe we were going to win.
This is probably completely meaningless. It could have been that my ravioli was undercooked, and that explains everything.

Kentucky has a mental toughness that Florida didn't have
we frustrated Florida, to the point where we could let up a bit on defense and they still wouldn’t make their shots. Kentucky made big boy plays. We didn’t make our shots in that late stretch, but we didn’t give them anything easy either. They just made plays.

I agree. I felt like we were dominating Florida during that game.
This game felt more like we were playing gritty and hanging around, but never really just flat outplaying them.

we’ve been unable to play 40 minutes pretty much all year, and it didn’t change today. Especially when Golden and Stokes took a breather. Doesn’t make it suck any less though

well, things have definitely turned in directions I really wasn't anticipating this early.

finally getting around to looking at stats
as usual, we can’t win if somebody is ice cold. Today we had two somebodies, as Golden and Swiperboy combined for 1/12 from the field. Only Stokes (4/5), Richardson (2/2), and Maymon (4/7) shot 50%+. And Jeronne had an under-the-radar double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. Also 70% FT shooting, going 7/8 after the first two bricks
