No online television for this game tonight as Tennessee gets a chance to vent against an overmatched SEC opponent. A loss is unthinkable and would signal that all is going as the Mayans have foreseen. In more realistic waters, the focus of this game is how the Lady Vols respond to their recent embarrassment in South Bend. Do they take over the game early and prevent an underdog from having hope? Or do they come out flat and allow Alabama to hang around a little longer than they should. Either way, it's a road game, and Tennessee has not been particularly consistent on the road.

Something to remember going in to Alabama

My view of Holly’s comments after the ND loss and why we leave Time Outs on the table to our detriment

HOLLY claims it was defense – but it was not
Happy to help you out Holly – let’s look at those first half stats that had you all worried about defense

Tennessee hits 7 or 35 shots in the half and 4 of 10 free throws
TOTAL FG% 1st Half: 7-35 20.0% F Throw % 1st Half: 4-10 40.0%3-Pt. FG% 1st Half: 0-2 0.0% 2nd Half: 3-6 50.0%
25 Johnson, Glory…… f 3-12 0-0 3-10 3 6 9
LSU held to 35% in the first half and out-rebounded enough to offset several turnovers
and allow UT 4 more shots.
TOTAL FG% 1st Half: 11-31 35.5% 3-Pt. FG% 1st Half: 2-6 33.3%

So Holly looks at these stats and says

Warlick had compiled 1½ pages worth of notes regarding Tennessee’s 72-44 loss to Notre Dame. And the Lady Vols’ associate head coach only had gotten through her
team’s first-half play on defense.http://www.govolsxtra.com/news…-notre-dame-an/

Anyone taking a close look at this situation will not come back and say our biggest problem
was poor defense in a half where ND was held to 28 points on 35% shooting. Our biggest
problem wasn’t in running an offense to get the ball inside to Glory and Vicki or Alicia – our
problem was Glory and Alicia missing open inside shots, and Glory missing free throws.
If Glory just hits those missed layups and free throws we are leading at the half
14 Missed Layups in the first half 28 points left on the floor 6 missed FTs and 3 front ends add 9 more for 37
We could have been leading 55 to 28 if we just hit free throws and layups

My takeaway from the first half was missing a whole lot of easy shots.

And once that happened, they got frustrated and started making real mistakes. But they did miss a lot of shots that they almost never miss.

by David Hooper on Jan 26, 2012 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

Full agreement

Why not call a Time Out and get them to calm down and focus on those 14 or more missed layups? It was a problem of rushed frenetic unfocused real effort without results that led to a great deal of frustration and a blow out

Woah.

Starting lineup is: Bass, Baugh, Burdick, Massengale, Johnson.

Weird. Best ballhandling guards on the floor. Not turning over must be the priority.

3 seconds on a player with the ball?

I recall that 20 second situation at ND where we missed 6 layups. We had three players under the rim for 20 seconds.

3 second calls are horribly inconsistent in the women's game.

I’ve seen 5 or 6 seconds not get called, and I saw a ONE second call.

I thought the 3 second rule

was for post player without the ball before the ball is shot

In case anyone is actually curious...

Ken Pomeroy actually has us beating Auburn by nearly double digits, with an 80% chance of winning. Followed by a 20 point loss at Kentucky(5% chance of a win).

And the whole reason I went there… Murray State is nearly at 50% to finish undefeated now.
And only ranked #40. The OVC is really weak this year, with Austin Peay probably being the 2nd best team in it.

Big downside: Alabama's shooting over 40%.

Part of that is the foul trouble that UT is having. The best defenders aren’t in there.

Alabama's trying the win via forfeit strategy

Section 1. The Team
Art. 1. At the start of the game, each team shall consist of five players, one of
whom shall be the captain.
Art. 2. Each team may continue to play with fewer than five players when all
other squad members are not eligible or able to play.
Art. 3. When there is only one player participating for a team, that team shall
forfeit unless the referee believes that both teams have an opportunity to win.

by Caban on Jan 26, 2012 10:00 PM EST reply actions

Really?

I thought that if a foulout left a team with only 4 players, that player could remain in despite having 5 fouls. (But that all previous fouled-out players were still out of the game.) I think that happened to Syracuse (men) a couple years back in a multi-overtime game.

by David Hooper on Jan 26, 2012 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

That's the NBA and international rule...

Thinking anything beyond the sixth foul on a player results in two FTs plus the ball

by Caban on Jan 26, 2012 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

Score to watch: Vandy leading Georgia at halftime.

If Georgia loses, UT has a two-game lead on all non-Kentucky teams is is effectively guaranteed no worse than 2nd in the conference. That’s a big deal come SEC tourney time. No Kentucky on a neutral court until the final game, which almost guarantees a long tourney run. That pretty well guarantees a 2 or 3 seed in the NCAA.

bigger picture:

After the ND debacle, they needed a game to put that one behind them. Next up is Georgia in Athens, which is a much bigger deal than tonight. Rough play tonight doesn’t necessarily mean anything. It could just be a wounded-pride team still thinking about the last one. (It could also be a sign of a dysfunctional team, which is a realistic concern.) But either way, it’s the Georgia game that will tell us about the current state of the team.

UGA losing to Vandy tonight

I think we go undefeated in the SEC from here on out and the tournament will come down to us vs KY in the final.
But an Elite 8 or Sweet 16 is more realistic than a final four

We'll be in decent shape next year.

Not championship winning shape, I don’t think, but not first-round exit shape either.

GameTracker rosters are horked up.

Tennessee has Diamber Johnson, Chantel Hilliard, Gaynor Darriel, Fomille Candace, and Tyrese Tanner on the roster.

???

Hmm

If we played the ones who work the hardest, who would that be?

I'm thinking

Johnson, Harrison, Miko for starters.

Sounds good.

Kamiko’s only hangup has been conditioning. She gets winded too quickly.

I think she'll get some time next week.

Not sure if it’ll happen against Georgia, but she’s close. Just no sense in rushing it.

by David Hooper on Jan 26, 2012 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

Even Stephen on rebounds (40 apiece).

We took 16 more shots, and we didn’t have Glory in for most of the game. But still.

Snap thoughts:

- I like rolling new starters in a game that was never really in doubt to send a message. On stats, it looked like it got through to Stricklen, at least – 5-9 in 15 minutes looks like the offense ran through her.
- If Simmons is in the doghouse due to bad shot selection ….um, well, see you next year.
- Bass had 5 steals(!!!).
- I still hate any Bass/Massengale lineup, but if you’re gonna do that to prove a point, this was the time to do it.
- Massengale had 11 assists, at least.
- Obviously, I don’t like the defense / board numbers (40% from the floor for Bama, matched boards), but given the other confusion, I can at least see it. Betting that’s back to normal next game.

Well, given that the refs called fouls until they ran out of fingers and toes (23 or 24 in the first half, IIRC),

I can partly understand the defense giving Alabama a bit more room.

Bass: she doesn’t turn the ball over. Check out her A/TO while you’re at it. If replacing Simmons with Bass means more ball control, more deliberate shot selection, and roughly the same shooting percentage, the argument actually makes more sense. Simmons gives fast breaks and some stellar defensive moments in conjunction with her questionable actions, so it’s not like it’s a clean argument. But rolling out the Arial/Brianna line meant an A/TO of about 3.8 for most of the first half. I wasn’t complaining much.

(And no, I’m still not arguing for Bass over Simmons. I’m just realizing the logic a bit more than I used to.)
