So, to start this off, you'll need just a tiny bit of background information... I'm obviously a Tennessee Vols fan, born and raised just North of Knoxville. Unfortunately, my folks had a job transfer and moved to Indianapolis. Now, don't get me wrong, I love it up here, but it's just not the same. Almost equally as unfortunate as moving to Indiana is having to deal with IU, Purdue, and Notre Dame fans, and lots of them. I got into a pretty heated argument tonight, and wanted to get opinions of people who I don't see on a regular basis.
Issue after the jump...
There is an anomaly in Indiana. People here have an issue liking a single college. You have your IU fans, who rant and rave over their basketball team but are embarrassed to even admit they have a football team. Then you have your Notre Dame fans, who while aren't pitiful in either sport, lean heavily on their football heritage. I guess Purdue is in the same boat as Notre Dame, minus some heritage...
My issue is most people I meet are IU basketball fans and Notre Dame football fans. I don't know about y'all, but that drives me nuts. I firmly believe in cheering for a school, in every sport, no matter how bad you are in certain sports. People in Indiana don't feel the same way, and say it's perfectly OK to like separate schools in separate sports. I tried making the "Liking Tennessee in football and Memphis in basketball" comparison, but it didn't get through to them.
What are your opinions? Is it ok to like one school in football and a totally different school (even one in your own state) in basketball?
