I hate living outside the SEC footprint

at least now that I have a TV. ESPN3 it is, I suppose

If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

Strangely enough

The local…CW?…station in DC shows SEC basketball on Saturdays.

I like Tennessee and Vanderbilt. There aren't many like me, and they're probably better off for it.

top 4 in the SEC is seriously in play if we decide to start winning road games one of these days

Also, you'd have to expect Vandy loses tonight

I certainly don’t want to admit that…but it is the most likely outcome. There’s just a huge bunch in the middle. Will be interesting to see where everyone falls out.

This game will be close. Florida got jumped on due to an 11 AM road start. At home, they ought to beat the Vols by 15-20 points.

and something that sucked at the time...

We didn’t beat Florida from February of 1991 to February of 1998.

The fact that we lead the series by ~20 games speaks to exactly how mediocre/unlucky Florida was until the 90s. They couldn’t hire a good AD/coach to save their lives, but then finally landed a great AD.

The largest lead we've blown this year is 8 points

and that was Kentucky. I think the second largest lead we’ve blown is just 5. We play defense the way we know how to, we hold this lead and go home very happy.

by Will Shelton on Feb 11, 2012 4:58 PM EST reply actions

we have the defense to hold onto big leads

but we tried to blow a big one just this Wednesday against Carolina.

and we did blow a 13 point lead in Charleston.

play D the way I know we can, and we can take this one. but it’s going to take a half of solid play

Hopefully the half saved us from that particular run being a big one.

If we can lock down the 3 point shot and keep the lead where it is/extend it, I think we can weather a run.

Isn’t just getting players who are good, it’s players who are committed to winning championships. All of Florida’s guys stayed to win a second. Lots of Kentucky players haven’t stayed to win a first. We’ll see what this team can do.

Cal has never squandered talent

When you make it to the final four, you haven’t squandered talent. But the reality of college basketball is that a single elimination tournament of of 40 minute games is a very flukey thing. The best college basketball team I ever saw didn’t win the championship.

To argue that Cal isn’t a good coach is past ridiculous. The guy puts an elite product on the court every. single. year. He is a sure thing. The only other sure is Roy Williams, and even he isn’t as much of a sure thing as Cal.

Arguing that Cal isn’t a good coach…it’s just ridiculous. Look at what he he’s doing. Take 10 deep breaths. Try to be objective. And then realize how silly it is to argue he is anything other than an excellent basketball coach.

Is that not the coach? Could they not have worked on that?

I have to respectfully disagree on the "elite" question

If you’re not calling Cal elite, then I have to ask if you’re doing something other than just waiting for the national championship to be over and then a second later calling the winning coach elite.

No homer.

by kidbourbon on Feb 11, 2012 10:27 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Winning a national championship doesn't make a coach elite

In the same way you can not win a national championship and be an elite player. However, at this point and time Cal hasn’t done enough to be considered an “elite” coach without that big shiny star. He has a .76 career winning percentage, has not won a national championship, and — and this is important, whether or not you choose to just la-tee-da ignore it — both of the teams he has coached to a national championship game appearance have been vacated because of some sort of scandal. Officially he has 1 final four appearance in 11 appearances.

An “elite” coach, to me, is one where there is absolutely no real case against them getting into the Hall of Fame. If Cal retires from coaching tomorrow, he’ll be cold in his grave before he gets into the HoF.

______________________________________________
Boom. Here comes the Boom. Braydy or not. Here comes the boy from the West.

by bobothevol on Feb 12, 2012 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know what you mean by la-tee-da ignore

I’m not a Kentucky fan and I’m not picking and choosing my spots when it comes to acknowledging wins that were later “vacated” by a collegiate athletic regulatory body that I consider to be (a) incompetent, (b) petty, © unprincipled, (d) possibly corrupt (e) often rendered useless by inherent limitations on its power, and yet (f) constantly attempting to assert and grow its power and authority whether or not that power and authority is even legally valid (see Jerry Tarkanian case).

So you can rest assured that my giving credit to Cal for his Umass and Memphis FFs is not done arbitrarily here for the purpose of strengthening my argument that Cal is an elite coach. I have no mancrush on Cal. I grew up a Louisville fan and then went to Tennessee where I became and remain all Vol. This background gives me about 897 independent reasons to not like John Calipari. But I think he is an elite coach because I think the evidence — And, as discussed above, I do include all three final four appearances as part of this evidentiary package — points emphatically in the direction of that conclusion.

No homer.

by kidbourbon on Feb 12, 2012 3:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Point.

(Though some do choose to ignore the issues around the Vacated wins with the “Nothing Was Ever Tied To Calipari/He Didn’t Know Nothing!” variety). I still would not consider Calipari to be an elite head coach with those three Final Fours, to be honest. The first of a vacations (hah) is definitely more serious than the second, but I don’t think I put as much “Random” stock into the NCAA Tournament as you do. The truly elite coaches and teams find ways to win those games, in my opinion, which is why you see a guy like Coack K or Roy Williams (both who I consider in that elite category) have done it more than once, even.

Coach K

His first NCAA Championship was 1991. It was his 5th trip to the Final Four. [FN1]

Just an FYI.

[FN1]
And if Duke hadn’t pulled off the massive upset in the semifinals by beating the best college basketball team that my two eyes have gazed upon — a team that, imho, beats Duke 9 times out 10 — they would have had to wait until 1992 and coach K would have gotten his first chip on his 6th trip to the Final Four. [FN2]

[FN2]
Assuming Laettner again makes that shot against Kentucky in ’92. [FN3]

[FN3]
My point in mentioning this isn’t to discount Coach K, who is unquestionably an elite coach, but to illustrate the intertwined truths that (a) randomness is not an insignificant factor in the NCAA tournament, and (b) elite coaches lose in the Final Four all the time.

No homer.

*fartnoise*

They are improving a ton, but any attempt to call Pearl anything but an excellent coach is just dumb. Just compare the 04/05 to the 05/06 Vols.

Unlike Pearl...

I agree that Pearl was a great coach, I do miss him, but last year’s team and the 2008 team both peaked early in the year then went downhill. This year’s team with Cuonzo is getting better as the year goes on. Just a nice trend. I just hope they won’t have the ridiculous schedule next year that will allow for some early wins and momentum.

Those offensive rebounds were killing me.

Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! To anyone who stopped following Vol basketball after Pearl left: what’s it gonna take to bring you back? Signing a 5* recruit that Florida, Memphis, and Kentucky all wanted? Check. Beating the defending national champions? Check. Sweeping the season series over a top ten Florida team? Check.

I'm more concerned about @SC than Arky

given their scrappy no quit play
I like our chances @Bama with the suspensions and the unrest on the team
Vandy here at home will be tough

in fact none of these games should look comfortable to the team but if they play like they did in Gainesville we will be just fine at 4-2 or 5-1 with a shot at taking them all now that we’ve beaten the road curse.
