Nice little insight. I think Kiffin acted in good faith while he was at UT

He really did energize the fan base and tried to make UT better.

But he fails to mention that there is some basis for people to hate him: the fact that he left after just a year.

I still despise him

by newportVOL on Feb 21, 2012 12:57 PM EST reply actions

Still hate you, Kiffin.

"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

I saw that this morning, the author was just serving up the slow hanging pitches.

Instead of asking:

Where are all the recruits you brought in? You know, the all-star recruiting staff getting it done?

Why were you and Eddie trying to lure players/recruits away from Tennessee after you left by telling them not to go to class after they already enrolled?

What is the deal with Willie Mack Garza? Do you honestly think the NCAA would have taken it lightly on Tennessee’s football program if you were still there?

I could go on and on. This is a worthless article just meant to troll like the Alabama one yesterday.

Hello ladies. Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. Sadly, he isn't me.

This word "troll"

You throw it around a lot. Who exactly is “trolling” with this? The AJC for printing it? Kiffin for talking to them? Brad for posting it?

I found the article pretty interesting. Maybe I just don’t understand what you mean when you accuse people of “trolling.”

I would say the author and the AJC were trolling

Well, I don't regularly read the AJC so I can't comment on their history

But as I said before, I found this article interesting. I agree that I would have liked to have heard his responses to some harder-hitting questions, but that obviously wasn’t the tone of the piece. Those questions would have been appropriate the night he left when our local media (under strict orders from Bud Ford) shamefully catered to Kiffin’s every whim on his way out the door.

I’m not aware of a lot of pieces where Kiffin has commented on his time at Tennessee since he left, so I found this interesting.

Actually, you claimed I throw the word around a lot and

wanted to:

understand what you mean when you accuse people of "trolling."

So, please do tell who I have been calling a troll. Do you have any examples or did you just feel like being an ass again?

I “attack” people who make moronic comments about a team I like so much. The “attack” you are obviously referring to regards an idea that it’s best for Tennessee to implode next season. That’s not a small difference of opinion. It’s idiotic. Not really concerned if that offends you tbh but I would love to know who I have called a troll.

Density man, amazing.

I guess I’ll play along:

My comment was an obvious (or at least I thought) reference to Joel’s front page comment of:

I was initially very interested in reading this article on Dave Hart from al.com, but I was too surprised and distracted by the stink of troll breath to enjoy it. Like chocolate and garlic, I enjoy both fan perspective media and objective mainstream media, but it’s best if they don’t pass my palate at the same time.

IN which Joel asserts, correctly, that an article was written to troll the Tennessee fan base based on said fan base’s hatred for Alabama. My own apparently obtuse reference to his original comment was meant to compare the ajc article in like fashion in that it was published to rile the Tennessee fan base based on said fan base’s hatred for Lane Kiffin.

Does that help? Succint enough? I could do a pie chart if need I suppose.

Well, since you finally at least acknowledged my question, I'll answer yours from above

A quick search of the site shows that since the beginning of this year, before this post, you have used the term “troll” in three comments:

Jan. 4: http://www.rockytoptalk.com/2012/1/4/2680654/tennessee-memphis-ii-this-time-its-personal#87549921 (Mike Griffith “trolled” Will)

One fanshot:

http://www.rockytoptalk.com/2012/1/16/2711300/question-for-rtt-regulars-ive-been-trolling-vn-since-the-dc-thing (you have apparently been “trolling”, yourself?)

And one fanpost:

http://www.rockytoptalk.com/2012/1/28/2754259/state-of-the-class (You say you know how to “troll” around for info.)

I was not just making it up that you use this term fairly frequently. Nor did I feel I was being an ass. I wanted to know what you meant by your use of it in this specific instance.

Always fun, Brian. Have a good day.

by birdjam on Feb 21, 2012 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

I certainly can't vouch for this, and I'm not defending the rag the AJC has become, but...

The way I envisioned this going down was at some big media gathering where the AJC — which tries to be a regional paper — was allowed to ask several questions along with everybody else. The reporter chose to ask some UT stuff to try and get a rile from Kiffin. He answered the way he did.

As I said, I don’t know. That’s how it sounded to me. I don’t see any reason why the AJC would call up Kiffin to talk to him solely about Tennessee, but maybe I’m wrong.

I just thought his answers were interesting, so I thought I’d share. I’m not trolling, and I know it’s been said nobody was accusing me as such. Just wanted to pass it along.

I agree with everything you say. I don’t think he tried to do well at UT. Look at what happened to his recruiting class after he left and look at what is going on at USC. He isn’t losing recruits hand over fist. He isn’t on the hook for major recruiting violations. His press conferences aren’t like episodes of Kids Say the Darndest Things. He isn’t an embarrassment to the program the way he was here. He isn’t about to hold a 9 p.m. press conference about leaving USC and let his players find out from the ticker on ESPN.

Whatever he says about trying to do right by UT you can just look at what he’s done at USC and know it isn’t true.

I believe he was certainly trying

And might have had success in the long run, but he most certainly did not leave Tennessee better than he found it (his words numerous times) and I have trouble envisioning a team with Tyler Bray and Ju’Wuan James but without Da’Rick Rogers, Justin Hunter, James Stone, or Raijon Neal right now. Maybe Kiffin would have ended up closing that class with other star players in that last month we’ll never know I guess.

That’s because he’s a self promoter and recruiting good players served his own end goals. His career would have been over if he had just shut it down and lost every game. To the extent that his personal objectives and the University’s crossed paths yeah you bet he tried.

Now look at the means by which he did it and the means by which he does it now.

When he was at UT he gave us a black eye. He was our representative to the nation, and he was the court jester of the SEC.

Now he’s at USC and you never hear about him saying Washington State players end up pumping gas. You never hear him saying that Steve Sarkisian cheated. He doesn’t do these things because it’s no longer just about him.

by Rockytop85 on Feb 21, 2012 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

or because people already know who he is

Kiffin trolled the SEC to build his brand. He’s successfully built it, so he stops trolling

I don’t think that statement does anything to disprove my point.

If that kind of behavior was “doing things the right way” or good for the University, there would be no reason to stop at all.

I don’t appreciate the University being made a joke of for the clowning coach anymore than I do for losing to Kentucky. Actually less so since the clowning is a lot easier to control.

He used UT to further his own ambitions and didn’t really give care about what happened if it didn’t affect his personal goals. To me, that doesn’t jive with what he said about leaving it better than he found it or making a good faith effort to do so.

I just wish he would go away

If he could just muster a “no comment” any time somebody brings up his time at UT it would make me happy. Do we deserve an apology? Probably. Not for leaving but for acting like such a fool and then leaving the way he did. But I won’t worry about that if he would just stop talking about us.

He’s acting like an ex who can’t help but get the last jab in. He never bought in, he never understood us, he never bled orange and now he just won’t go away

Troll Media

I believe the internet, social media, blogs, internet advertising, and ESPN have created a sports media environment where real journalism is being replaced by this type of sensationalism.

Why go out and do research to create well reasoned, quality commentary/journalism when you can manufacture headlines or state some ignorant, inflammatory opinion and get at least as many clicks and ad revenue when people retweet it or post it to their blogs?

If you’re smart, you can write something respectable like RTT. If you’re talented you can write something witty like Spencer does at EDSBS. You’ll get clicks it if it’s good.

If you’re a no talent clown, who has managed to get a press pass you can generate clicks by being present when some coach jumps the script after the 14th rendition of the same pointed question. Some people will read it because its sensational.

If you’re a no talent clown who has been shamed out of the press room for having a mouth full of marbles, you can still generate clicks by just making stuff up, and saying things like “UT is trying to become Alabama’s JV squad.” Some people will read it because they can’t wait to say you’re wrong.

I consider these last two to be trolling. Putting in a minimum of effort to generate a maximum of clicks.

Most of what comes from major sources like ESPN and big city papers is this sensationalist or media-manufactured trash. Using the word troll to refer to it isn’t wholly inappropriate and using it frequently doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a less accurate label since it seems to happen more and more lately.

by Rockytop85 on Feb 21, 2012 4:25 PM EST reply actions

I understand all of that

But I did not read this particular piece as falling into that category. This was a journalist asking a coach about his time at his previous school, questions that he hadn’t really spoken much about. Nothing was made up or inflammatory, at least not in my opinion.

I think that’s a reasonable opinion.

I also think it’s reasonable to think that they went in with the agenda of asking him about UT’s crappy season and getting a little gold nugget comment.

Personally, I tend towards the latter because that is the sole subject of the article, and Kiffin has a reputation for delivering such nuggets.

by Rockytop85 on Feb 21, 2012 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

"Most" is really extreme...

There are plenty of John Adams style writers out there, but the vast majority of journalists try really hard to put out good work… It just so happens that people read and discuss the “trollish” editorials over and over while just glancing over the other dozen articles in the same section, so a perception develops.

And honestly, if you are a good writer some folks will always believe you are trolling as sometimes the truth isn’t what people want to hear.

I’m on the liveblog and watching the GameTracker now. Wondering if the UT tech guys didn’t throttle them down again, wouldn’t surprise me considering how broken the chain of communication tends to be at UT.

Didn’t see this, but the reason we’re down is ugly. In the 7th inning we brought in Freshman Connor Stevens to throw, and he gave up a homer on his first batter… then we had two errors and a wild pitch. Pulled Stevens for Carter Watson, and then ANOTHER throwing error scored a run. But Carter then got us out of the jam.

too much to lose, not enough to gain

gotta figure we were just trying to avoid a double play and setting up a hit and run.

what the heck just happened?

did we just have a guy get caught in a rundown and the other team think they tagged him when they didn’t?

also, why the heck get in a rundown at this point in the game? the guy on first doesn’t matter if the guy on 3rd can’t score

Macs may break at similar rates to PCs, but their three-year parts and labor warrantee is gold, and their customer support is by and large pretty good

Right.

And about whether or not you want to pay for that extended protection, in some cases.

A miracle for the Titans!"

by TennesseeTyrants on Feb 22, 2012 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

I'd advise to never get an extended warranty...

at least for PCs. There just aren’t any individual parts that are valuable enough to justify the cost most of the time. And if the motherboard itself is going to fail it’s typically because of a manufacturing error and will go out within a few weeks.

On the rare occasion where I’ve helped someone who is nervous about working inside the case, they are always shocked at how easy it is to replace hardware. Seriously, unless you are afraid of voiding a warranty there is nothing that your average user couldn’t replace inside of five minutes and it will typically save you at least a hundred bucks in labor.

Heck, I could build someone an entire working PC if I had the right components inside of fifteen minutes. And I could show anyone else to in an afternoon.

Yeah, that’s definitely the worst case scenario. Replacing a motherboard is a beeeeeeeeeeyotch, and if another piece of hardware caused it to fry you may not even know until you break a second one.

by _trey_ on Feb 23, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, my desire to fix my own stuff is why I never buy extended warranties.

And also part of the reason I’ve never bought a Mac (though only a small part of the reason).

I’ve seen a lot of macs break down, and the people who have had the apple care were taken care of, but the people who didn’t were in just as much trouble as the rest of us, haha.

Overall that's some pretty good pitching over such a long game.

Yeah, we gave up 7, but over 13 innings and by 8 pitchers, not bad at all. Lots of pretty decent showings.

Hello ladies. Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. Sadly, he isn't me.

by VolBrian on Feb 21, 2012 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

Yep...

So far Steckenreider, Nick Blount and Zack Godley have all looked like really good pitchers. Obviously this can change once they start running into top shelf hitters, but it’s a far cry from last season’s pitching. And we’re not even really making any strategic effort right now… we’re treating these like preseason games by limiting our pitchers to a handful of innings and getting everyone involved.

Last season we had guys going 6-7 innings early in the season if they did well, but you have to figure the experience we’re getting everyone will pay dividends… particularly in the midweek games where we aren’t putting our rotation out there.

And Dalton Saberhagen looked like a total lock down closer tonight. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t become our #1 closer or #1 middle reliever, really not sure how good his endurance is.

In the land of silly things, our RPI is currently tied for #83. This is behind quite a few winless teams. It will sort itself out once everyone has played a handful of series, but seeing UL-Monroe ranked #1 is kind of funny.
