Recently, I have been paying keen attention to how RTTers use the available resources of the site to share breaking news, comment on opinion articles, and a complete a host of other things that a blog-like structure allows.
But we're from Tennessee - Land of the riding lawnmower with an old VW Beetle motor swapped out for that pitiful 12HP Briggs & Stratton. Leave it to us to find new and interesting ways to use and sometimes abuse a system. In my short time here, I've also seen the comments used to gauge interest for and coordinate events in and around Knoxville and share about the locations and times of upcoming Vol events.
But what if there was a way to view these events in one fixed place? To not have to rely on a comments section on the most recent article (Does, "Wait, which one was it again?" sound familiar?), hoping that some arbitrary percentage of our readership hits that page will see it? What if admins and fans had the ability to tag events, both UT official and unsanctioned social, not just in Big Orange Country, but across the nation? To this end, I would propose the RTT Interactive Map.
Taking advantage of the Google Maps API (with which I have worked fairly extensively), we could create a place that shows all types of Vol-related events around the country. If you're a Vol fan outside of TN that wants to be able to interact with other fans, submit a request to tag yourself in a city, so that others can see your area of influence, and contact you about getting together for an upcoming game. Tag a Vol-friendly bar in Ohio, a Butch Jones speaking event in Memphis - The possibilities are endless.
RTT, while having a more limited group of regular viewers than other sites, has some of the most dedicated, kind, and intelligent fans I've had the pleasure to interact with. Such a feature would give us the ability to share our experiences, our love of the game, and our beer.
Am I crazy, or would this be awesome?
