The Tennessee tennis team defeated Duke in the NCAA tournament today 4-2 in a thrilling matchup to advance to the Tennis sweet sixteen in Athens Georgia. While the vols cruised yesterday to a tune of 4-1 in the first round match against Elon, today's match against Duke was certainly no walk in the park with four of the singles matches going into a third set. Tennessee tennis superstar Mikelis Libietis came through in the clutch to clinch the match for the vols by winning 6-3 in the third set. Jarryd Chaplin and Bartosz Sawicki were the other players to win their singles matches that helped give the vols a huge victory.
I know tennis isn't extensively covered on this blog, but this not only a huge tournament win for the men's tennis program, but also for all the men's athletic programs. This is a team full of great kids, and plus it is always great to beat Duke in any sport. This team has a chance to advance further in their tournament than any other men's sport has in the past four years, so that is also exciting.
The Vols take on UCLA this Friday in Athens. This team deserves the support from volnation this week so make sure to wear orange on Friday to support the team.
If you want more information about the team, I wrote a feature story on their senior player Jarryd Chaplin. You can read it by clicking this link.
Let's hope the tennis team's run doesn't end here and that they beat UCLA this weekend.
