Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Rocky Top Talking Points: Gator, Gator, Gator edition

  • If you missed last night's Tennessee-Florida game, you missed a perfect night. The game highlight reel, courtesy of UTSports.com, is a must see. The look on Peyton Manning's face when Pat Summitt, decked out in a cheerleader outfit, led the crowd in Rocky Top is priceless. Whenever I write "okay, then," on this blog, that's the look on my face. The best possession, in my view, is at about the 8:58 (of the game clock) mark of the first half. There's another great one at 18:46 (of the game clock) of the second half.
  • Hat tip to Fulmer's Belly for finding the YouTube of Summit's cheerleading stunt so quickly:
  • On the football front, Tennessee is experimenting with the no-huddle offense this spring, and over at the FanHouse Andy wonders whether they have the right personnel for it.
  • Florida State is not going to grant Brandon Warren a release ($). Okay, then.
  • And finally, if you missed it, Orson of Every Day Should Be Saturday and Peter of Burnt Orange Nation hosted the first episode of EDSBS Radio last night. Orson keeps calling it a train wreck, but if it was, it was in reverse, because although they had a couple of hitches early on (I was the first caller, and I spent what seemed like an eternity flubbing around and trying to remember stuff about the season long forgotten), they picked up steam and finished very strong. Excellent work, guys. Check out last night's episode to hear it for yourself. Listen at your own risk, though, as there's a reason for the "explicit" icon. Lots of them, actually. Really, really good stuff, though.

Blogradio
Joel, just wanted to give you props for your "performance" on Orson and Peter's blogradio show last night!  I was really disappointed in your 'shameshag' choice, but hey...to each his own...I'm not judgemental!  Good quasi-analysis of the season in rebuttal to Orson's comments, too.

Thanks, Aerobab
I find those things a lot more difficult than they sound, and I thought I was rambling about Cal and the season and Air Force and Ainge and, wait, I'm doing it again.

See? There's the difference. I could edit that. But once it comes out of mouth on the "radio," there's no going back.

But it's all about having fun, and it was definitely that. When I hung up, I missed Peter's comment about the difference between Tennessee fans and Vandy fans involving sweaters and ties, and thought it was pretty funny when I heard it this morning. He and Orson really did a great job.

Warren Release Drama
I don't know all the rules about transfers of scholorship athletes, but why can't he just disenroll at FSU and decline his scholarship?  I thought these were voluntary and not contractually binding.  If it's a concern of money, I'm sure the UT boosters can throw together a "scholarship" on this end to help the kid out and get him closer to his mama.

Can anybody enlighten what the REAL deal is?

From what I understand
It's the "National Letter of Intent" that the kids send in on National Signing Day. That LOI locks you into that school for one full academic year. If you break you commitment, you sit for a year which apparently is in addition to the year you have to sit for transferring anyway.

This article explains a lot.

Good stuff on the game, Joel
Wish I could have been around for the live thread but the wife was doing some stuff on the computer at the time.

What a great way for Bradshaw to go out. If I had been blogging three years ago, I would have been ripping Bradshaw pretty regularly. Now he's one of my all-time favorite Vol athletes of any sport.

In that same vein, I have ripped Ryan Childress at times, too, but he's starting to show some of that Bradshaw hustle. Maybe he can pick up the gauntlet for next year.

So . . .
. . . you at least got to see the game, though, right?

Hope you didn't miss that.

Go Vols!

Oh yeah
I was parked in front of the TV. just couldn't get to the CPU. I just didn't want to sleep on the couch last night so I figured I could give up some sort of media in the house.

Great Win
I think we are starting to peak at the right time. We might be ready to go on a March run. How far can we go?

by Smitty @ Rocky Top Talk on Feb 28, 2007 12:11 PM EST reply actions

We will go...
...all the way to the top of the field of 65!!  At least that's what I (friendly) bet on last night with one of my friends!!

Yes, it's an extremely bold prediction, but like Smitty said, we're peaking at just the right time and timing is everything (look at George Mason from a year ago).  Last year, we were a team of overachievers out of the blocks. The season took it's toll and we were just plain gassed come tourney time.  This year, we seem to be plain 'achievers' (win what we should - lose what we should) who still have room for improvement to obtain the 'overachiever' status and pull out some truely shocking wins in the tournament.

In the words of the 2004 BoSox..."Why not us?"

That's pretty bold Areo ....
but I like it! I'd be happy with winning a couple in Atlanta next week.

I like it, too
But I can't shake the memory of feeling quite optimistic after the Kentucky win.

Remember at South Carolina the very next game?

I hate to say it, but all the folks on Rocky Top, myself included, are going to have that glow for a couple more days. I'm not at all sure we'll be ready to go to Athens this weekend.

Go Vols!

We're fans
We're fans, remember...we're expected to bask in the glory!  Coach Pearl and the boys on the otherhand are not.  By now, I'm positive that The Hulk has already erased last night from his mind and is 100% focused on ugly UGA while pressing the same thought onto his team.  I think that the "road monster" is off of our back and we'll play loose, just as we did last night.  Ok, maybe not quite as good, but you know what I mean!

Good point
Fans have freedoms players and coaches do not.

Grateful for that!

My Firsthand Account
...is up at http://lasthome.blogspot.com

I was there at the game last night, and it was a blast.  Most fun I've had at a UT basketball game since, well, forever.
