  • Lofton tied for fourth place Sunday against Kentucky;
  • should claim fourth place to himself this evening;
  • is averaging 3.31 threes per game this season;
  • whether Lofton can get the record depends on the number of games remaining:

We've reached the breaking point on first place. Even if the team makes the SEC and National Championship, Lofton still needs to average more threes per game than he is currently averaging. Second place is still well in reach.

Hadn't heard about Florida
opening the doors to the pool until today.  If the other SEC schools are going to trump up their homecourt advantages, why not UT?
  •  Orange-tinted arena lights.
  •  Orange floor.  White paint in the keys.
  •  Orange backboards.
  •  Pep band located behind the visiting bench.
  •  Dance team located beside the visiting bench.  (No touchie!)
  •  Free hot dogs and pizza for everybody in the first three rows behind the visiting bench in the second half.  (Mmmm... smells good, doesn't it?)
Any other ideas?

Wow.
One spectator seizure, and that'd be all she wrote.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

Ooh. Another one.
Move the main A/C unit directly beneath the court.  It'd be a bit disconcerting, but boy, would your feet feel good after the game.

Rumble, rumble, rumble.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

Weeeeeeell...
They did have 24,000 orange seats before they got all cutsey and replaced them with 20,000 black seats.

Yeah, it looks nice, but I still don't get it.

by Aerobab on Mar 5, 2008 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

I like it
I think it's fantastic. Really makes the orange, brighter court stand out. Of course, I've always been partial to orange on black.
Go Vols!

Oddly enough,
me too.

How about
popcorn vendors hocking their wares? On court. In game.
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

I think Lofton has a good chance tonight.
Florida's guards are relatively young and short.  He should be able to get some good looks.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 8:52 PM EST reply actions

Yeah but...
...as long as they're emotionally emotional, their emotions will get them through this emotional time.  You know, after all, they've been on an emotional roller-coaster over the last emotional week.  Emotionally speaking, of course.

No No, Juanny!
2 fouls in 3 mins!  Bad news, but maybe a good set up for Pearlfection?

can't get the game on TV here in NYC.

bummer that i can't watch it, good luck!

They're just straight beating us down the floor.

by Aerobab on Mar 5, 2008 9:21 PM EST reply actions

Trouble
Florida just wants this one more.  We're being beaten in every aspect of this game.  Their shooting percentage isn't helping things.

Pearl is dangerously close
to standing on the court during play.

But so is Donovan.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 9:40 PM EST reply actions

I beat the Vols
Both playing catch up, me to real time and them to the Abomination. They're making progress, though, too.
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 9:45 PM EST reply actions

Again
I hate the rules on blocking fouls.  It gives way too much power to the ball handler to force a defender to foul.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 9:50 PM EST reply actions

Why?
is the ref talking to Stephen Pearl?

I need a new word for yikes
Look at that assist-to-turnover ratio! Never seen anything like it. Double checking . . . yes, 17 assists to four TOs for the Gators. They can't keep that up, can they?
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

Probably not.
Much like Memphis couldn't keep up the treys.

However, they don't need a whole lot to be a very, very difficult mountain to climb over.

Question
Hey, does anybody know whether, assuming we get a one or two seed in the NCAA Tourney, we'll play on Thursday/Saturday or Friday/Sunday on the first weekend?
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 10:08 PM EST reply actions

Nope.
Just depends on which region we get placed in.

by Aerobab on Mar 5, 2008 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks, guys
It looks like we just won't know until Selection Sunday. I need ti know whether to take Thursday off.

Stick-Em Gloves?
Are Stick-Em Gloves allowed in CBB?  If so, we need to buy Crews a pair.

by Aerobab on Mar 5, 2008 10:21 PM EST reply actions

Uh-oh
Vandy might have just played themselves out of the Nashville Invitation Tournament.

by wvvol on Mar 5, 2008 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

I don't want to sound whiny
but is Florida being allowed to play more physical on defense than UT is?

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 10:27 PM EST reply actions

Translation:
What I mean is this...

When is bumping allowed and when is it not?  Florida's very physical on D and not getting many fouls.  UT is getting called for a lot of light fouls.  I don't know what makes the difference.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

Yes.
They're also being allowed to shuffle their feet and get charges called on UT.

by Aerobab on Mar 5, 2008 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

Dog-tired
Bert just said Florida is dog-tired!

by wvvol on Mar 5, 2008 10:29 PM EST reply actions

Don't look now . . .
. . . but we're down by two.
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 10:36 PM EST reply actions

Florida's shooting percentages
have gone down considerably.  UT's have stayed about the same.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 10:37 PM EST reply actions

I have an idea.
When they get the ball, why don't we just let them score?  It'll save the refs a bunch of wear on their whistles.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 10:37 PM EST reply actions

Amendment:
Same when we get the ball.  Just hand it to them.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

All right
I'm beginning to get really upset about the foul calls. Is it me?
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 10:38 PM EST reply actions

I'm beginning to want a stat study
of fouls calls in the SEC - conference and non-con games.  I'm willing to bet there's a statistically significant favor of fouls on the home court.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

I think Chism actually bleeds orange.

Is that a bandage on his shoulder? Orange blood patch underneath? Seriously, what is that thing?

But I thought Lofton was the guy
who was almost too unselfish...

...so confused...

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:01 PM EST reply actions

Given the choice
would you rather he miss one or make both (don't consider him missing both)

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:05 PM EST reply actions

Hard foul
Chism took a knee in the back on the head when that guy came down.  Unintentional, that, but it had to hurt.

(The knee wasn't the foul.)

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:08 PM EST reply actions

On, nevermind.
That'll teach me to listen to the commentators.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

No
You saw what I saw. One ref called a blocking foul.

by Aerobab on Mar 5, 2008 11:09 PM EST reply actions

Nevermind.
But more officials in confusion.

Turnover on the OOB.  Dang.

by Aerobab on Mar 5, 2008 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

What?
That was a charge, was it not? He was standing there for seconds.
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 11:09 PM EST reply actions

Watching these refs
Is like reading Supreme Court opinions. It's always a fractured, two against one opinion. They never agree.
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 11:11 PM EST reply actions

Guilded:
On the inbounds, the pass was knocked back out of bounds.  Officials called it Florida's ball.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:12 PM EST reply actions

Florida had a trey attempt.
But it missed.  The scramble knocked the ball out of bounds - UT possession.  Time had runn out, though. Game over.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

0.5 seconds
UT ball to inbound.

UT up by 3

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:13 PM EST reply actions

Great game by the Vols
Fought through a lot of adversity. Different guys stepping up at different times. Keeping composure in spite of some really awful officiating. Pulling it out in the end.
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 11:14 PM EST reply actions

89-86 final score.
UT outscored Florida 47-31 in the second half.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:15 PM EST reply actions

Hey Joel,
Any chance you can get shooting percentages by half when you do postgame?

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:15 PM EST reply actions

Hmm
I've done that before, but I can't remember how. First half is no problem -- we have those. How do we get second half only? Any ideas?
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Mar 5, 2008 11:17 PM EST up reply actions

Subtraction.
Take the total shots and makes, then subtract the first half shots and makes.  Divide makes by shots and multiply by 100.

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

Aaaiiiii!

Kidding, of course
But I'm exhausted and going to bed. Perhaps that will sound like fun in the morning.

Many, many fond memories of Denver and Colorado.  Ft. Collins is perhaps my favorite all-time city.  Check out Old Town up there sometime.

Vols are making FT's at the end of games now
That was my biggest concern earlier this year, but they've turned that around the past 4 or 5 games.

by wvvol on Mar 5, 2008 11:17 PM EST reply actions

73% against UK
69% against Vandy, 67% against Memphis. But I think their late game FT shooting is even better, Ramar's effort Sunday not included. :) They shot less FT's than Florida made tonight.

CSU's an awesome campus.
It could be considered UT-West if you really wanted.  Not quite as hilly, though.  I went to UWyo for my undergrad, but I have nothing but love for CSU.

Now I'm homesick.  :(

by David Hooper on Mar 5, 2008 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

Valliant effort by both teams
Florida, I hate your guts.  I do.  But that was a gutsy effort, and for that, I applaud you.  I thought the game was over at the half.  Then you let us think we could win, and it nearly cost you before you lit it up again and pulled it down to the final posession.

I hate you because you win with your young, yet talented roster, which scares me to death.  Tonight was a learning experience for you and with the lessons learned, you'll go deep in the SEC tourney and get awarded a Big Dance invite.

But tonight was our night.

I can't claim the words of WVVol, and for that I'm regretful.  I know better.  Congratulations, Vols, for a hell of a hard-earned victory.  You once again proved yourselves to be Pearlfect.

Congrats, Vols.  I

Lofton's tied for 3rd all-time.
Got 4 tonight. I had never heard of the #2 and #3 guys on the list. And one of them played 60 miles from me (Keith Veney - Marshall)! He must have loaded up at Lamar.

The Vols Have HEART!
What a game! Down by 16 and fight back. I said it earlier this week. This team has heart. They have moxie. They know how to win close games. That's the mark of a potential champion.
