Orange Jacket Game, y'all.

So the Abomination defeated the Hulk and the Pantheon last week. No worries. Today, in a battle that really matters, the basketball Vols host our historical archrival across the way, the Vanderbilt Commodores, a team that is strikingly similar to the gamma-irradiated super-genius and Hulk foe known as The Leader.

The Leader

a.k.a. The Vanderbilt Commodores

Samuel Stearns was transformed into The Leader when the radioactive materials he was moving as part of his job with a chemical research plant exploded and exposed him to, you guessed it, gamma radiation. Well, they say that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and that was certainly true of Stearns, who was transformed from a high-school dropout with average intelligence into a "a green-skinned, super-intelligent criminal with an oversized brain housed in a towering cranium." The Leader now possesses superhuman mental acumen, perfect recall, and the ability to master any subject, including tactical and strategic scenarios.

Despite his vast intellect, The Leader's arrogance makes him prone to rash and dangerous decisions, and he continues to pick fights with the Hulk despite his many defeats at the hands of the physically superior enraged Hulk.

Vanderbilt, one of the Southern Ivy schools, has won five of its last six games, and that stat, plus road wins over Kentucky and LSU, has them playing with confidence. They are, however, 3-4 away from home, and the Vols are 12-0 at Thompson-Boling Arena, possessing wins over Memphis, Texas, Georgia, and LSU.

Today, the Commodores come to Knoxville looking for a fight. They're going to find one.

Leave your pre-, in-, and post-game thoughts below.

Chism!
Hits two big threes on his first two shots.

FYI, he's not a guard.

11-0
Three threes, two by Chism, one by J. Smith. Offense loosk great. Defense looks great. But it's early.

Coach Stallings
Is the offer still on about free RTT swag to the person getting a sign on TV digging on "Crybaby Kevin"?  You know, after calling THE HULK an "idiot a*&%$@#" in jealousy over the Hulk Rage?!

I guess I'm out of the running, since I'll be here.

Oh, yeah
That deal's on until somebody does it. Good to see you, Aerobab. Looking pretty good early, huh?

Hot, hot, hot
Vols up 18-3. Vandy completely out of synch. Pour it on!

Oops
Looks like Crews will be on the bench for a while, as the coaching staff performs a Rectal-Craniotomy.  Bonehead maneuver, but he'll learn.

Yeah
Boneheaded, but fiery.
Go Vols!

Gametracker stats can't be right. But he's doing everything.

Half time stats
Halftime Stats
  The Pantheon The Leader
Field Goals 16-27 (59%) 7-30 (23%)
3-Point FGs 6-11 (55%) 3-14 (21%)
Free Throws 4-8 (50%) 4-5 (80%)
Rebounds 18 (4 off, 14 def) 19 (9 off, 10 def)
Turnovers 7 10

59% to 23% in field goals and 55% to 21% in three point attempts. The Vols are pushing the 'Dores out of their comfort zone on offense, extending the defense all the way to the player on the perimeter wherever they are.

Vandy's shooting percentage will average out in the second half, so we'll need to be ready, especially considering our tendency to sleep through the first part of the second half.

Go Vols!

Lookin good
I'm seeing Bruce Pearl-Tennessee Basketball.  We're still struggling from the FT line, but both our FG and 3PT percentages look good.  I thought we did better on the boards than the stats show, but we're still doing good.

I know we're a "small" team this year, but we need to take it to the hoop with more power and authority than we have on a few of those baskets.  But, that's been one of those stories of the year.

Slams
Yeah, I wonder why we don't see more dunks.

WOW
WHAT A DUNK BY CHISM!!

HOLY COW!

by Aerobab on Feb 10, 2007 2:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

huh?
Did I just resurect Harry Carry from the dead?  I think so.  My bad.

by Aerobab on Feb 10, 2007 2:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

WOW!!!!!!
R. Smith on the break behind the back pass to Chism, who bats it down, gets control, does a 360, looking like he's going to maybe get a layup, and instead slams it home.

Wow.

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 10, 2007 2:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

just for the record
Not a 360, rather closer to a 180, but definately a monsterous reverse dunk!

by Aerobab on Feb 10, 2007 2:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep
Perhaps a 270.

But the whole thing looked like it was falling apart until he sent it home.

Go Vols!

Whoops
I got sidetracked taking care of the baby, but it looks like we put this one away.  A muchly needed win for the Vols.  I'm sure my man Joel will be posting some final number here in a bit!

Vols win 84-57
Excellent game for Chism and the Vols.
