Arkansas, shmarkansas. It's just another away game: Vols-Road open thread

Willie Nelson famously sang "I can't wait to get on the road again." Well, that Willie Nelson's full of #@$&, man. Then again, the Redheaded Stranger never had to play on the road in the SEC, so maybe I should cut him some slack.

Anyway, I'm not going to waste any words on Arkansas. That's no disrespect to the Hogs, but being that this is a road game and UT is 0-6 against The Road in SEC games this year, there's really no reason to spill a lot of verbiage on this game today. In fact, as you can see above, The Road has pwned the SEC this year, racking up a 59-19 record for the home teams in league games this year. And if you're wondering, that's not a happy little sunshine in the graphic above, that's a road leading straight into a fiery death, as it has been all season long. We might as well be playing the '96 Chicago Bulls. If you want a preview of the Razorbacks, get it here or here. But not here.

What I will talk about is something that has been a little bit of a hot topic around here of late: whether or not to consider Tennessee a bubble team for the upcoming NCAA basketball tournament. I've been wanting to read the opinions of people who might really know what they're talking about when it comes to such matters, and in a timely manner, Rivals.com has broken down bubble teams into three categories: "Looking good", "On the fence", and "Need help now." At first, I didn't see Tennessee listed in any of those slots, which I took as a good sign. After looking closer, however, I noticed UT listed as "in similar shape" as the looking good teams.

Unfortunately, the teams on the in similar shape list don't get the breakdown given to the other teams. So I guess I'll have to do it myself. Here's Tennessee's resume for March with three games remaining in the regular season, using the same criteria as the Rivals article (Kenpom.com used for the RPI ranking. Quality wins are home wins vs. teams in the RPI Top 50 and road or neutral-site wins vs. teams in the RPI 100; bad losses are home losses vs. teams outside the RPI Top 50 or road and neutral-site losses vs. teams outside the RPI Top 100.):

Tennessee Volunteers (19-9, 7-6 SEC)
RPI: 15
Quality wins: Memphis, Oklahoma State, Texas, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Alabama
Bad losses: @ Auburn
Last 10: 6-4
Remaining: 2/23 @ Arkansas, 2/27 v. Florida, 3/3 @ UGA

So what stands out to me is that even though the Vols have nine losses and six losses in-conference, only one of those Ls is a "bad loss." None of the games left would be a bad loss either, though the sheer number of losses caused by losing all three could create difficulties for the Vols on Selection Sunday. Winning any one of those games would be considered a quality win.

Aw, dang. I guess that means we do have to win one on the road. I guess this is as good a time as any. I take back everything I said about The Road being one-bad-mother-shut-your-mouth-I'm-just-talking-about-The-Road-I-can-dig-it. We can take that weak old Road any time. I hope.

Leave your pre-, in-, and post-game thoughts below.

Go Vols!

Cheerio, then
Good preview, Andy. We're sitting in EPCOT's World Showcase, England to be more precise, waiting for the Fish and Chips place to open. It opens at 'half eleven' which I take to mean 11:30. Maybe it's 5:30.

So I won't be there, but add my voice to the cheers.

Go Vols!

Bloody 'ell!
You could pick food from anywhere in the world, and you choose British food? To each his own, but I've been to England, and the food's not what would make me go back.

Cheers! And Go Vols!

All square early
13-13 early on. I actually had to pay to see this game on ESPN Full Court as the UGA game is on here in middle Georgia.

So if I'm plunking down cash, we better win this one, road game or not.

eyes
You're our eyes, CFAJ.

Are we shooting better today?

Go Vols!

so-so
Shooting is definately better than the Bama game...still nowhere where it was/should be.  We've hit a few 3s, but attempted and missed probably 3 or 4 times more.  We're doing ok in the paint, but we're just undersized and being manhandled.  Most of our points in the paint are off of backdoor cuts and give-n-go's.  Very tough to post up.

Runs, Runs, Runs
Latecomer, as usual.  So far, this has been a game of runs.  Very exciting though, with lots of good action.

So far
Tentative 2-point lead. Shooting is streaky, as usual. Rebounding is surprisingly ok.

Halftime
36-33, Arkie.  UT is 5-17 from behind the arc.  Arkansas has 5 blocks compared to a single one by the Vols.  We're going to need to step up the game one more notch to pull this one out!

Go Vols!

36-33 Hogs at the half
Under Nolan Richardson, they called Arkansas basketball "40 minutes of Hell." This has been 20 minutes of "what the hell?" Just the last minute featured 2 missed layups, 2 missed 3s, a block, a steal, and to cap it off, Jordan Howell getting dressed-down by Pearl at mid-court before going into the locker room.

UT AR
Points 33 36
Field goals 12/34 (35.3%) 12/25 (48.0%)
3-Point FGs 5/17 (29.4%) 1/5 (20.0%)
Free throws 4/5 (80.0%) 11/12 (91.7%)
Rebounds (Off-Def) 17 (9/8) 17 (4/13)
Assist/Turnover 8 / 7 6 / 7
Points off turnovers 9 11

Forcing turnovers and getting points off turnovers is what we do, and they're doing it better right now. That's a W for Arkansas (and The Road) if we don't turn up the heat.

En fuego!
Whatever Coach Pearl said at the half...it worked!  UT is now up 44-40 with 16 and some change remaining in the 2nd half.  It looks like we're inspired again.  The UT D is forcing turnovers off of the press, and making buckets out of them.  Sweeeeeet!

by Aerobab on Feb 24, 2007 2:12 PM EST reply actions

No answer
UT has no answer to defending the Hogs in the paint.  They're just too big and too strong.

by Aerobab on Feb 24, 2007 2:27 PM EST reply actions

53-52 Arky
The streak of scoring off Arkansas turnovers cooled off. It's either heat it back up or start drilling some threes, because like Areobab says, we've got no answer for them inside. They can just wear us down in there if we let them.

by CornFromAJar on Feb 24, 2007 2:30 PM EST reply actions

Beautiful
UT on a 19-4 run over the last 5 mins!  69-57, Vols...we're pouring it on, hitting some 3's in the process!

WOOOO!

by Aerobab on Feb 24, 2007 2:43 PM EST reply actions

But hold on...
Arkansas says they're not done, closing to within 6 with just over 4 min. to go.  Time to dig deep-er...some more.

Crazy game
I don't even mind that I had to pay to see it. Unless we lose...

excellent
that might actually give us some extra oomph for the visit from the Abomination. No more real pressure, back home, last question mark answered. Shoul be fun.

Thanks for the updates, guys! I'm hitting Slash Mountain again. Splash, I mean. Slash Mountain is another park.

Go Vols!

Mark it a 'W', Dude!
What a game...83-72, Vols!  That's 20 wins on the year, so I will officially switch my "locked in" vote to a "Yes".  This vicory also gives Coach Pearl his 14th 20+ win seasons in his 15 years as a coach.  We are certainly lucky to have him, as he set up several set plays at the end that TOTALLY exposed the Hogs for easy buckets.

Congrats, Vols!

Big Win
Now we're a lock!  I was concerned there for a while when the Hogs were absolutely destroying us inside.  But C-Loft would never fail us! Pearl is awesome, I usually don't condone waxing players at midcourt, but hey, it worked, never question the Hulkster.  Now we need to knock of FLA and better our seed with a run in the SEC Tourney.

Howell
What did Howell do to get Pearl so miffed?
Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Feb 24, 2007 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

Ugly
I don't remember the specifics, but he and Childress pulled some boneheaded craziness in the final few seconds of the 1st half that resulted in a horrible look and subsequent shot.  I just recall screaming "WTF was that?!?!"...and then I saw the Hulk "talking" to the pair on the court.  Whatever he said, fixed them promptly!

by Aerobab on Feb 24, 2007 11:46 PM EST up reply actions

Gators also loose
Gators also lost on the road at LSU.  Oh, did I mention Glen "Big Baby" Davis didn't even play?

There's no reason that we shouldn't beat UF in our house.  Hell, as far as I'm concerned, I could even deal with a loss, as long as we play better than we did down in Gainsville!  That showing was AWFUL!
